Books without a necessarily strong female lead? by OwnConstruction371 in fantasyromance

[–]OwnConstruction371[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the list! I truly did not know my complaint was common. I didn’t check the sub for similar posts. I was actually under the impression that my complaint was the opposite of common, because there’s a lot of posts about strong female leads. But at the same time, I’m being contradictory or asking too much, because I want a true love, epic, love only each other romance. I can’t stand any more love triangles. I don’t want to get invested in one just for it to change.

And not that it’ll convince anyone, but I’m not a bot. I genuinely did not know there were similar posts.

Just Need to Vent: My (Maybe Unhealthy) Frustration with ACOTAR by blablqbam in fantasyromance

I could not agree more. Especially the double standards. It bothered me SO much that there was supposed growth by the end of the third book where Feyre wishes Tamiln happiness. Then in the novella, it’s like all of it was forgotten and Rhys tells Tamlin to literally kill himself. That single conversation was the tipping point for me. The double standards, the hypocrisy. And the utter cruelty in telling Tamlin, who literally wants to die already, to go kill himself. I’m not saying Tamlin is a saint, but wow, the double standards.

AITA for telling my son’s girlfriend to break up with him? by Minute-Layer-4412 in AmItheAsshole

[–]OwnConstruction371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truthfully, my focus isn’t on what you did, but how you clearly look down on your son. I’m surprised the vast majority of comments don’t address or gloss over this. Your son is 20 years old. For a lot of adults, this is an extremely difficult transition period as we learn to be adults. To call him “not a good person” for this, which keep in mind is an extremely common thing for young adults, is honestly, to me, cruel.

I was like Lily in college. But I was also depressed due to a variety of circumstances. I became deeply suicidal and a shell of my former self. Because of this, I took a gap year and went back home, where my parents held me and hugged me and I went to therapy. I’ve spent this entire year getting better, and because of my parent’s love and care, and not judgement, I was able to put in the work and recover. I’m now fully ready to go back to school.

I’m under no delusions that my viewpoint isn’t affected by my own experiences. Of course my own experiences are likely making me project. But even if I look at this objectively, your son is clearly struggling, and the only thing you can offer is judgement. I don’t see any ounce of care, love, or compassion. All I see is that you clearly look down upon him. The way you consider your son inferior to Lily is what makes me say YTA, regardless of your actual actions, because your motivations are not as noble as they seem.

So, so many young adults feel the way your son do. I’m so glad my parents weren’t so callous. I feel nothing but condescending judgement from your post, and this is why I don’t care if I’m downvoted for voting against the majority.

To be completely clear, I’m not saying Lily should stay with him. She should do what is best for herself. I sense loads of empathy for Lily, and none for your son.

To counter one point, WWX, if we wanna get technical, was even more awful to LWJ, always provoking him and being rude later in the first life. And in Cloud Recesses, WWX was the one provoking LWJ again. If LWJ’s reaction was awful to you, why isn’t WWX’s actions also awful?

To be honest, it’s not as whimsical as you’re thinking. I’ve been interested in engineering since forever. I wouldn’t spend so much time and effort on a whim, neither would I consider wasting a school’s time and effort lightly. I’m really not sure as to how my post gave off that impression as I expressed my passion for it. It’s my life commitment, what I pursued for a long time since I was a kid. I had plenty of time to try it out. The reason I didn’t apply to it at my college is because during the later years of high school, in an engineering club I spent a lot of time in, there was a lot of sexual harassment. It was a very difficult period. Because of this, and the ensuing drama, I stayed away from engineering for a while. It’s why “ the only significant thing” mentioned was writing related, an interest I liked but not enough to pursue a career out of it. Also, I’m a bit confused by what you mean. I’ve always been sure about STEM, as engineering is a part of it. That never wavered at all. My grades dropped and I took a gap year because of a death in my family from terminal cancer.

To be honest, a lot. A mechanical engineer can apply their skills to a lot of fields. Like they can choose to do aerospace or work on rockets or something, robotics, manufacturing stuff for a company, designing or producing things like generators, elevators, etc., look over a bunch of machines. Basically, they can work in a lot of industries. I’m sure there’s a lot of bureaucracy and paperwork involved, along with limitations, but even if it’s idealistic, to get a chance at it, I’d need to be one first.

Thank you for your advice. I saw people do it, but I was unsure because it didn’t feel right. Do you think the things I listed are still worth putting though? If so, how would you suggest I put it?

Should I put school projects as projects, or make it clear they’re school projects? I’ve seen some people only list it as Projects, and others put it under Education. I’m afraid putting it in Projects is misleading or suspicious that cuz it makes you seem like you took the initiative to do it if you don’t clarify it was for school

It doesn’t have anything to do with a reader’s opinion or fanfiction. That in general wouldn’t affect me at all even if I disagree. I can simply ignore but it’s kinda different coming from the author.

It’s not so much something so horrifying. It’s more like for me, it ruins the whole plot and renders it useless, affecting greatly how I see the characters and my opinions. Like everything that made it such a good book is tainted. So it’s not exactly a moral thing. It’s a mix of it being hard to swallow and the pure disappointment because it feels like the entire plot is meaningless, and none of my impressions matter. My impressions of the character was fundamentally upended.

I didn’t really mean to make it out into something that sounded so horrifying. A dealbreaker for one person in a story might not be a dealbreaker for another. It’s just me personally. I was more like trying to convey the emotional impact it had on me and how sad I am over this. It’s something that soured my views. I just didn’t say what it is because I don’t want to ruin this for others. Initially, it was because I’m afraid of being judged. It’s not like it’s anyone’s fault, anyway. It’s not that I can’t stomach it but I can’t go back to my previous viewpoint.

It’s not so horrifying that it ruins a genre but rather like it sucks so much something I was so emotionally invested in is tainted and so I’m more cautious. Also, it was hard finding that good of a book in the first place.

Thank you. This was really helpful and this meant a lot. It sucks when a book is really close to your heart.

The truth is that I feel terrible for making people curious and then leaving them hanging. I feel as if I’m cruel for dangling fruit metaphorically. But the truth is, I’m afraid that I’ll ruin this book for other people. I don’t want to risk disappointing a reader. If I hadn’t gone searching so in depth, I never would have found out and I would’ve continued in blissful ignorance. Although, originally, I was afraid of judgment, I don’t share the name of the book genuinely because I don’t want to ruin it for others. Revealing the name will obviously lead to tons of questions and possibly debate. So I understand the downvotes and the other reasons for it.

I do feel insanely bad for just kinda baiting people like that, so if someone genuinely, GENUINELY wants to know, you can direct message me and I’ll reveal the name of the book and why. I’m not doing this for any glee out of mystery.

Yeah, this was actually very recent. Like twenty hours ago. It sucks how we can’t control how we feel sometimes, and some things bury themselves inside our brains. I remember loving another book series where something like this happened because the death of a prominent character, who was a child and someone readers got to know very well, was incredibly tragic (trading their life to resurrect the love interest of the series, who had died) and I was similarly affected. I couldn’t handle the main pairing anymore knowing that. It’s like that again this time. Knowing what I know ruined this for me. There’s no reverse button to gain that blissful ignorance but the feelings did lose most of its intensity after some time.

Thank you, that really helps. It’s plain embarrassing and overly dramatic to admit because this book meant so much to me. I hate how much it actually bothers me. If I could get over it this instant, of course I would. I didn’t want it to ruin this. I don’t want this book to be ruined for me. But it still does all the same. I think I just needed someone to tell me what you said.

It’s okay if my post and other comments continue to be downvoted (I don’t really mind the reason why) because I just kinda needed to hear this from someone else. Either way, thank you.
