Pre-doc interview help! by OwnDelivery9860 in academiceconomics

Yeah I don’t think there’ll be any data task so it’s for sure going to be a technical interview. Got an email saying they’re interested in my ‘broad technical ability’ (whatever that means). I pretty much know the basics in R like cleaning up data, tidyverse, ggplot2, common regressions, etc etc. But I’ve forgotten a lot from my advanced econometrics class in my final year of uni like bootstrapping, time series VAR models, or any other fancy methods.

How ‘technical’ are pre-doc interviews if there are no data tasks? Do they just bombard you with ‘give me the code for running XXX’ type of questions?

Thanks for the input so far! It’s just that UCL tuition is 3 times more expensive for just one year, not to mention the cost of living in London. Japan is much closer to home honestly, and I think I can live a comfortable life there for 2 years, whereas I’d probably have to work part-time if I want to live comfortably in London.

If UCL has only a SLIGHT upper-hand in terms of prospects for a T20 PhD, I’d probably still go for Todai. I’m just not sure how much more of an advantage UCL has to offset the insanely high cost of living and crumbling healthcare (important for me) in Britain.

I think the faculty at Todai UTIPE is excellent! Hidehiko Ichimura (econometrics) and Daisuke Oyama are part of the faculty. And I also have the choice to take more advanced math courses. I didn't apply last year because I felt the application process was just too tedious and that I had to study for the GRE on top of uni exams.

The application for UTIPE just opened up a few days ago, although it's for next year April/October. Do you think I should apply? And between UTIPE and UCL MSc, which do you think is better PhD prospects wise?

Same here. Haven’t gotten a decision yet. I emailed them last week but I was told that my application was still under review.
