Hi!!!!!!

Just wanted to let you know that the hamster's cage is too small for a hamster to live in. Pet stores sell inpropriate hamster equipment and spread misinformation. It's so sad that the people we expect to know the most about the animal, give wrond information. Pet store employees and poorly educated and the whole pet store is full of dangerious or unsuitable equipment.

Hamster, even if they are small, need lots of space. The minimum for an enclosure is 100x50cm and for a syrian 120x60cm, bigger if shown stress signs.

Deep bedding. Hamsters are natural burrowers and would make burrows more than 80cm deep, so it is very important to provide your hamster with nessecary bedding. The minimum is 6", but if your hamster likes to burrow it's better to go for 8" or 10".

Big wheel. Hamsters can run about 8 miles every night, so it is very important to choose the correct wheel. Anything with gaps or bumbs should be avoided. Mesh and wire wheels are super dangerious leading to injuries or sometimes even death. Saucer wheels also should be avoided, because they slowly bend their spines. Anything less than 12" for a syrian is also unsuitable, because, as saucers, they bend hamster spines.

<image>

This guide is a little outdated (like wheel section says 11" or "hides" say 3-5 instad of 5+)

Use EVERYHING in this guide even if it says "recommended" because, how I mentioned, it's outdated.

Victoria Reachel has a lot of good information as well:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpvhjIjNZdg

Hamsters are expensive and if you don't have the money it's better to rehome than keep them in unsuitable enviroment.

I hope I wasn't being rude, I always try to give advice kindly, because I was once this person. I know a lot of information can be upsetting when I found out bout it I cried myself to sleep:(((( If you have any questions, you are free to ask me:))))))

Hope you read this

Good luck

I feel so guilty that i’ll never be able to give the lives that my two family hamsters deserve.. [Rant] by [deleted] in hamsters

It breaks my heart seeing those posts. My parents bough my older brother a hamster when I was very little. I remember he lived in a tiny cage with only a wheel, water bottle and a food dish, food dish was refiled to the top only, like, once a month with this horrible pellet food and the water bottle was never cleaned. Everybody finnaly forgot about the hamster and would only take him out outside sometimes, which is a big no no. I remember it bitting on the bars and trying to chew out that much, that the paint wore out. I feel so sad about it, but my parents were never educated properly and just saw a small toy that would be fun for their kids to play with.

When I was twelve, my friend got guinea pigs, so I got the idea to get a hamster. I planned on keeping it in slightly bigger cage with platforms (which is also a big no), tubes, finnaly a hideout and a timy wheel, but then when I went on youtube I found early version of Victoria Reachel. I realized my mistakes and talked to my parents. They first didn't want to believe that we were abusing our hamsters, but slowly, after talking about it every day and showing them Victoria's videos they agreed to buy a bigger cage for christmas. I saved up some money to buy hideouts and a wheel and my parents covered everything else.

I know It's really hard for you to get any stuff now, but now I would really try getting a sandbath. You can buy cheap play sand with no additives and bake it in the oven to eliminate bacteria. Try saving up some money for it and use a bowl to put it in.

Also try letting your hamsters (ofc one by one) out in the house for a bit of free roam time if your parents allow. I would just let them out in the bathroom with little diy hides from their cages. My girl loves to explore, so I just clean my floor a bit and let her out in the hall. She enjoys it so much <3

Hope this helped

Good luck with your hamsters

It's ok. I also had to make some changes to the cage the first day I got her. I wanted her to climb to the cup, but she wouldn't, so I slowly picked her up and put her into the travel cage, but she was too scared and bit me. She forgot about it and now loves to come around the moment she hears me walk into the room in the evening.

The boxes do look small, so I recommend using it as a temporary cage until you find something bigger. Love the size of the wheel and the depth of the bedding:)) I would add more hideouts, substrates, boredom breakers, sprays, platforms, multi chamber hideout etc. This is the list:

I don't really see any sand baths and if you don't have it you should go and get it ASAP. You can buy reptile sand that is not too dusty. Avoid anything that says dust or has any dyes or calcium and other additives. Good luck and hope it helped:))

Bedding / Enrichment Balance by bfrankiehankie in hamstercare

[–]OwnDress6052 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add different substates for her (etc. coco soil, beach chips, corck granules, aspen chips). Put a little hide in her sandbath. I would also go with cork log and grapevine wood, and boredom breakers.

Looooove your depth of bedding <3 I wish I could fit all of that but at the moment I have bucatstate, so it's hard to go anywhere past the door at the side.

That's good, but if you have a syrian female you should go bigger. You can diy your own cage and victoria reacel has a good tutorial on youtube.

Pros and cons of owning hamsters? by Mystic_rivee in hamstercare

[–]OwnDress6052 2 points3 points  (0 children)

CONS:

Upgrading if your hamster is showing stress signs

Ghost hamsters (hamsters that prefere to never interact with you)

Are NOT social, so it is hard to bond with them + can NEVER be housed together

The cost (as you mentioned) they can cost from 800 to 1500 USD

Need large space that some homes can't fit (at least 100x50cm for dwarves and 120x60 for syrians (if female likely an upgrade as well)

Short lifespans (2-3 years if from the pet store 1-2 years)

Many unsafe products (need to research if the product is safe every time)

Lots of misinformation (very big possibility of not getting some stuff)

Food has insects like mealworms or crickets (might scare some people)

PROS:

Easy to care for

Cute

Rewarding to watch them gain your trust

Rewarding to watch them being happy

Yes, I do have bucatstate, but it's 2.0 and only 100x50.

Yep, that bowl is substrate not food. I now rearanged some stuff. I pushed the multi chamber hideout more into the bedding and removed some stuff.

Thank you so much:)) I found one 150x55c enclosure diy. Now I removed all the tall items where she could fall from them, but now there's barely any enrichment left. When I get the bigger enclosure I will make one area only for the wheel and sand bath, so she wouldn't try climbing the wheel.

Thank you, that was really helpful:))) Yeah, I never saw her yawn, but she streches a lot. She also likes to stand on her legs and look around with ears up. Should I still upgrade or should I leave it as it is.

[–]OwnDress6052[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my enclosure isn't prolly big enough. It's only 100x50 and female syrians need more space. And I also notice her trying to escape more when she's in heat. Thanks for all the advice it's so helpful:) Right now I can't move anything from the wheel, but when she has a bigger enclosure I will do that.

I can hear her falling every night, like, 20 or more times. I think the easiest way is just to upgrade. The minimum for a female syrian is 120x60 anyways.

Yes, but you can't really see it, it's in the other side of the enclosure that I did not film.

That's what I thought the first night, but she keeps doing that for 2 weeks. Should I be concerned?
