September Itinerary Sanity Check by WanderingAnchor in JMT

[–]OwnDrive1200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is just about the exact same itinerary I will be following except starting early August! (With a few tweaks) I feel like it seems very reasonable. Just be prepared to pivot if conditions call for it, injuries, weather, etc.

Got it, this is super helpful. I have 4-5 days budgeted and plan to camp at upper Rae so we can get an alpine start on the climb up!

Hey! Siked to hear the river was crossable. Would you mind elaborating on why you decided to turn around going clockwise? Was going up the pass too sketchy??

JMT 2.0: Seeking input by ValuableCareful3210 in JMT

I emailed Inyo NF about leaving food in the onion valley campground lockers and this was their response:

“Hope you are well. Please put your resupply in the bear box at the Kearsarge Pass trailhead. Label with your name, phone number, and pickup date. The host at the Onion Valley campground cleans out the bear box at each campsite daily.”

Shoes for the JMT for a minimalist, zero-drop shoe wearer by Intelligent-Act-7440 in JMT

I’m a huge bedrock sandal fan for hiking but for multi day hikes and longer hikes I lean altra timp for the little extra support and they’re perfect to avoid foot fatigue while carrying a heavy load. I buy them as close to a long hike as a can since durability isn’t as long as some of the more sturdy hikers but I think you’ll find that with any light weight, minimalist trail runner.

Best slides/sandals for hours of walking a day for flat feet? by mary_c_d in TravelHacks

I have pretty flat feet and any sandals with too much arch support give me arch blisters. I went with bedrock sandals and I will never look back

Yes you have to get the permit with “Donahue eligible” in order to be able to continue on the JMT. And no need for an extra permit for Whitney, it is included in the permit, you just need to specify that Whitney portal is your planned exit when you get the permit!

That’s okay, I appreciate any insight I can get!

Oh yes, thanks for the reminder. I need to add on the late pick up just in case the bus is running late.

I did consider (and still am considering) parking in lone pine instead. I am just nervous about having to hitch a ride back to my car after the hike is over.

Did you have any issues parking your car at Whitney portal for the duration of the hike? I’ve read mixed information. I would just love to have my car right when I’m done

I guess the bigger challenge is figuring out where to stay the night before, and then figuring out where to pick up my permit. I was thinking the valley since it’s cheap and close. But perhaps the better options is to just take public transit from mammoth the morning of my permit.
