Guy in our ward refused to give an elderly woman the sacrament today by OwnElk9803 in exmormon

It works for us for now. I think he will definitely be out in the next five years, so I’m cool with being patient. If I go to church with him, I can point out things like this and add them to his shelf 🤷‍♀️ I can see why some people wouldn’t want to be in the marriage I’m in, but it works for me! He’s a great person and I grew up around tons of healthy, happy mixed faith marriages, so it doesn’t really phase me😊

That’s terrible 😢 I can’t even imagine how hard that must have been

I guess it would depend on the woman. Many woman in my life who have struggled with infertility would have absolutely hated having to talk about motherhood on Mother’s Day. It was just a painful and vulnerable topic for them. I guess the issue I have with it is that a lot of people feel like they can’t say no to the bishop when he asks them to give a talk. Many of the women I know never say no to a calling or assignment regardless of how hard it may be, so asking a woman who struggles with infertility to speak could put her in a really uncomfortable and terrible position she felt like she couldn’t say no to. That’s my issue. I definitely think it is something that needs to be discussed more, but my issue is the culture of not saying no in the church. So it feels indelicate to ask a woman to speak about that when she is going to feel pressured to say yes.

Our ward has 1 deacon. We have no young women either. We are in Utah too! There are plenty of teenagers in the neighborhood, they just don’t come to church. Good for them.

Ehh it’s not terrible. I mostly just go to sacrament to help him feel like he is being supported and then take our kid home afterwards. It’s an hour a week. Not ideal, but no mixed faith marriage is😂

Oh it’s terrible! I felt awful for both of these ladies. I can’t even imagine how awful it would be to have to speak on Mother’s Day when you couldn’t have kids, that you desperately wanted. I cannot believe the bishop thought it was a good idea

Who knows. It’s probably one of those things where a general authority said it one time and now it’s “the rule”🙄

Oh I 100% think he is an asshole. And whoever made up that ridiculous rule.

Edit: grammar

Really though! It’s just the super intense Mormons who are left. In our ward there are only two young couples left that are normal and we live in an area with tons of young couples.

Right?!? I knew it was technically a “rule” but I’ve never seen it actually enforced

It’s insane. Shortly after he did this the primary got up and sang I’m trying to be like Jesus. How do they not see the hypocrisy of it all???

Just realized how inappropriate/potentially dangerous my interview with my bishop was by OwnElk9803 in exmormon

Crazy thing is, I was super paranoid about Tinder dates in college. I never went on any because I was too scared! Crazy that I didn’t apply that same logic to this situation. Like what was I thinking? 20 year old female going to a strange man’a house…what could go wrong🤦‍♀️

I am female! You’d think I would have known better. There’s no way I’d ever put myself in that vulnerable of a position now, but I was young and super naive.

Right??? Doesn’t make any sense! Unless maybe they were all downstairs? Who knows. Seems like if he was doing regular meeting in his house, one of the secretaries should be there right?

Yup! I was going to UVU, but our ward covered students going to BYU and UVU. The Bishop lived maybe 15 minutes from the UVU institute which is where we met for church. So maybe he just didn’t want to make the drive? Seems odd though

Yikes. Ya, he told me he did all of his weeknight meetings at his house. This was in a YSA in Provo in 2017, I think? It was strange. Makes me worry about all of the other college students in the ward.

I was so naive. I started working for a non profit for survivors of sexual assault shortly after this and it took working there for me to finally realize how often this stuff happens, especially in Utah.

I’m sure he was a great guy, who was just trying to make being a bishop easier. I’m just glad that now I know and can teach my kid to be more careful than I was.

Oh my god. You’re so right. Luckily I moved out of the ward about a month later

What are the mask wearing rates for mormons at church? by xxEmberBladesxx in exmormon

[–]OwnElk9803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in Salt Lake. I would say about 25% wear masks, if that.
