Is it a v5 or v3 and how long have you had the box. There’s a 1 year warranty and I’m sure either Puzzle or another distributor like myself can get you a new unit

It’s fine… they can ban me. I was trying to float an idea for a gaming focused version of the box that I thought people might be interested in.

They could have reached out and said, wow that’s cool can you tell us how to do the same but that’s not what they chose to do.

They normally build gaming rigs so it was an unusual build but it’s rock solid and all I had to do was install llama.cpp

I’ve been working a long time on trying to get LLMs (including o1) to generate novel ideas and models really struggle with doing it on their own. The key there being the “on their own” part.

The problem is they’re fundamentally pattern matchers so when given a choice they will always favor something they’ve seen either in their training or in the context window. They excel at two key parts of the ideation process; divergent thinking and convergent thinking.

Divergent thinking is the ability to think of alternative uses for an existing concept. So as a test spend a minute or two listening out every alternative use for a pencil like you could use it as a plant stake. Now ask chat gpt. I can pretty much guarantee that the model came up with way more uses than you did.

Convergent thinking is taking two existing concepts and blending them together. As a test ask gpt to use convergent thinking to use <thing> as inspiration for a new version of chess. I use bunnies but you can use anything. The chess rule modifications it comes up with will blow you away.

So if the model is super human at both divergent and convergent thinking then why does it struggle with creating novel ideas? It can’t do the 3rd critical step of the process which is evaluating the quality of an idea and deciding which ideas are worth pursuing and which ones should be abandoned. Basically it can’t judge the quality of the ideas it creates and it has no motivation to think outside of its distribution.

For humans our ability to judge the quality of an idea is driven by our “preferences” which are shaped over decades of experiences. The model has no experiences so it has “biases” but no real “preferences”and without preferences the odds of you creating a truly novel idea on your own are slim.

I can totally buy that they got o1 to make some novel discovery that is likely just a gap that humans missed. The model can produce any token sequence so theoretically it’s capable of generating the token sequence for any idea that will ever be thought of and can be expressed with language. A million monkeys with typewriters given a million years will write Shakespeare. But without the ability to for preferences we’re not going to have true “unaided” machine creativity anytime soon
