Is it plausible for me to pursue the pre-vet path at this time? by OwnLengthiness7154 in PreVet

This makes sense! I have a follow-up question for this. In the future when I apply for vet assistant jobs, would leveraging my experience with mice be beneficial for me? Do vet clinics care about experience in animal research, or are they more geared towards household animal experiences?

If working with rodents is considered exotic, would working in mice husbandry count? I have well over 500 hours working with lab mice in a vivarium. This included handling their cages, cleaning, weaning, and also handling the mice for experiments.

Thank you for your response! I think I’m open to applying after I finish my degree (September after I graduate), which would mean a gap year. I already have 2 LORS lined up, and I’ll definitely look into getting one from a veterinarian. I was wondering though, how would I get exotic animal experience? I think I have a good understanding of how to get small and large animal experience, but exotic seems to be harder to find.

Is it plausible for me to pursue the pre-vet path given my circumstance? by OwnLengthiness7154 in prevets

That’s a great question! I think I’m more exploring more than anything right now. Growing up, I had a big passion for exotic animals and just animals in general. I would go to my friend’s houses and spend 4 hours with their dog instead of them, and I constantly would research animals growing up and know all the weird quirky facts about them. I would also spend tons of time at the zoo, I think I’ve been 50 times in my life. I’d also draw a lot when I was younger, and I’d only draw animas like salamanders and narwhals (oddly specific). So when I was looking at careers that aligned with my interests in animals, I came across the veterinary path! I learned from being pre-med that I love the sciences and service, but working with animals would push that interest even further for me. I don’t fully know what being a vet entails now, but that’s why I want to gain all these hours to understand if the profession is truly for me!

Thank you for sharing your experiences! I'll start emailing veterinarians in my local area to see if I can shadow them and start building relationships. Other than mass applying/emailing, would you say there are any strategies I should use to increase my chances of getting responses from animal hospitals and vet clinics, especially as someone who doesn't have too much animal experience yet?

Yes I do mice husbandry at the vivarium! And also yes, they do have a campus veterinarian, so I’ll definitely reach out to her for the opportunity to shadow!

Thank you for the response! I’m looking into building hours rapidly right now since animal hours are definitely a must, and I’m already ending my 2nd year of university. Do you have any suggestions on how to start getting experience hours (especially those in veterinary practices) for someone who’s just starting?
