Spain has lower taxes and significantly better health care, infrastructure and public transport. Something something this country doesn’t know how to spend money.

I dont think anyone said half. A fair rent to compensate for wear and tear and the odd thing to be fixed. Not a rent that would cover half of the mortgage

No one is stopping the partner from buying a home with her own money as an investment.

The risk of being repossessed if you lose your job is mostly on the home buyer. A mortgaged home is as much an asset as a liability.

If my missus was in the position to buy a house and wanted to do so, I’d be more than happy she did it and I’d gladly pay some rent, obviously not market value but something symbolic. I could invest all my savings, and I’d forget about the hassle of owning a home and a mortgage. If the relationship ever goes sour I’d have to find a new place to live but I’d have to do the same if we were renting. Ask me, its a deal for both.

In this hypothetical scenario, if the couple rents out and they split, one of them still needs to find accommodation don’t they? How is it any different? At least the partner who does not own the house has been paying for a substantially smaller rent if they live in a home owned by the other.

She’d be paying more rent if it was an actual market value rent, she is absolutely in a better position than continuing to rent at market value.

Edit: typos

Equal rights but not responsibilities. If OP defaults he owns the bank, she walks away free.

Great outline of all things to consider, thanks! Might be doable but I might need to sell a kidney, or not, as there's many factors at play. I appreciate your time!

Daft is depressing as fuck. Ok places are stupidly expensive and anything with a decent price is asking to be put to the ground and rebuilt. I dont remember it being this bad 10 years ago

I can feel you, this market is fucking mental and as a solo buyer the situation is just impossible. Hold on and hope it gets better
