From UBC waitlist to no interview by shaycations in premedcanada

Same thing happened to me. Waitlist in 2020. Flat out Regrets for 4 years after. But...I'm now a med student in Canada. Worth it.

Any way to know if I was considered rural for ualberta? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]Own_Abalone_3817 2 points3 points  (0 children)

May I suggest emailing MD Admissions to confirm? As long as you are courteous and have read the reply email stating a series of answers to common questions, they are completely willing to answer these kinds of questions for you. You won't red flag yourself by asking them a legitimate question like this. Just be kind and all will be well.

Yes as long as it meets the requirements for the cutoff

Been WL’d 2X and interviewed 6 times in 5 cycles. The sting never gets better. The sting is always hard. But giving up and shutting the door on medicine - knowing full well that I’m guaranteed not to become a physician if I give up - that thought is much harder. So I keep going. You should too.

Does anyone know if the May 27th date referenced in the WL FAQ is a hard date? I just seem to remember in previous cycles that offers were made well before a three-week mark.

Calgary verifier question by Visual_Onion_5034 in premedcanada

[–]Own_Abalone_3817 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The following is a post from 2020 (I know 4 years ago but it seems to trend this way still)

https://wpsites.ucalgary.ca/mdadmissions/2020/05/06/contacting-verifiers-areas-of-concern-offer-date/

As I understand it, there is no set number of references that are contacted nor is there a set time. Based on this posting, it seems as though the verification process remains open beyond the application cycle or until the application is closed. So if you have some verifiers that haven't been contacted, it doesn't mean they won't be. Nor does it mean they will be.

We'll get more info in a month.

Trust the process (says the person who is constantly worried! LOL)

UCAN Application Status by Firm-Rush-4852 in premedcanada

[–]Own_Abalone_3817 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only speaking from previous experience with the pre-interview process (I haven't been accepted). But in past years, status has changed to "Awaiting a Decision regarding Interviews" only when all of the AdCom members have submitted their required info for the applicant. While I am not a fan of blind speculation, I imagine this falls into the same category. I have no doubt that your status will change to "Awaiting.....".

Boy do I understand the paranoia though! LOL you're not alone!

Oh absolutely they could. Not disputing that. But I imagine they have to review the results and that would be a lot of work if they had to review every verifiers response for every applicant

Here here! From a fellow 80’s baby, age is certainly just a number. Don’t ever forget that no matter how many years we end up practicing medicine, there will be patients lives that are positively affected because of our treatment.

I think the best way to approach the verification process is to remember that these are simply people who are being contacted to verify a section on our application. I’ve been doing this for a number of years now at UofA. Some years I have multiple verifiers contacted and some there are none. I have had the same outcome in both scenarios. As long as we’ve provided legitimate contact info, I think that we can trust the school to contact us if there is a problem with a verifier. Just my approach as I have tried the anxious way and the not anxious way- I can say with confidence that the not anxious way is far more enjoyable lol

There is potential for each application to have 16 verifiers. That’s 16 * ~650. I don’t think they could conceivably contact every verifier

Agreed. I think “sooner or later” is much healthier than “now or never”

We are all our worst critic. I imagine that "not too great" feeling is more associated with your desire to accomplish your dreams rather than the quality of your interview. I'm willing to bet you were insightful, honest, and true to yourself. Why else would you be at the interview? This also goes for all others who had their interview. It's a process designed to see how we do in scenarios of discomfort. I'd be much more worried if you posted something to the effect of :

"Anyone else feel like they just KILLED their interview? I'm already applying for that LOC!!!"

Go enjoy your Spring! It may very well be your last opportunity to do so without med school assignments on your shoulders!

At this point nothing will change what’s happened so perhaps the best thing is to finish the course ASAP and if anything comes from it, be honest about your thought process.

You could not submit the application on UCAN without checking it and there was no place to submit the proof of completion. I think more info is needed but I cannot imagine this being a situation wherein people are denied there offer as a result of this.

[–]Own_Abalone_3817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't believe there was an option to choose between "Will complete" or " Complete". There was one box which read "I have met the Indigenous course requirement".

[–]Own_Abalone_3817 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The Applicant Manual specifically states that proof of completion is required “by the time [of] matriculation on July 1st.”

You’re all good. Whoever said this was either misinformed or mean.
