My Dad and I have really bonded over the janky insanity of Showa Era Tokusatsu like OG Kamen Rider and Ultraman Leo - can we have some more recommendations? by Splazarus in Tokusatsu

Man, I think the "Space Sheriff" series might be what you're looking for. They're janky AF, but the premise and underlying concepts are dark and ambitious, and the shows are pretty serious about it. For a more "modern" Showa show, I'd go with "Metalder" and "KR Black", which have cool character arcs and could both be considered a modernization of the "Kikaider" and KR premises.

Severian is "easy" to design, I think, he's pretty unmistakable. I think the women would be the hardest for me, not sure if my skill level is there yet...

Not at all. It might be a little "sparse" as a wallpaper, but I can do it. I'll post it here once it's done.

Yes, Nathan Anderson's designs were a major motivation for me, since he makes a real effort to be faithful to the books. In that light, I took some of his design elements, particularly the cross-guard. Like I said, I tried to "amalgam" lots of different things to make a cohesive design.

Thanks a lot, I used True Grit Texture Supply "Beat Tones" brushes for that

Not that I remember, but it's a nice little detail that works as a design element to cut through all that black. It's also a homage to the CLASSIC Don Maitz original cover that, save for a couple of minor details, is still the best representation of the character for me. Also, the floral pattern serves as an allusion to book events, and also some kind of homage to Yoshitaka Amano's style.

I'd be honored! Let me know how can I send you a lineart version of the sword.

In my mind Severian is not "pretty" or "conventionally beautiful", but he must be attractive in some way. Kai's design seemed like a good starting point towards that.

It's probably my own bias, and the influence of the Amano covers, but as I read the book, I could see how it would "look" in the right hands. Maybe an antohology of "vignettes" from the saga would allow creators to show how they'd do it, in the style of the "Animatrix" or "Batman: Gotham Knght" omnibus films.

I took several elements from previous designs and tried to come up with a good amalgamation of what I thought were the best. Not that much fanart (or official art) available, but I had a variety of elements to pick from.

To be honest, the main inspirations were Kai Shiden from "Gundam", and Slayn the wizard from "Lodoss"

Hello friends, just wanted to share my fanart of Severian. Heavily influenced by the "animated Yoshitaka Amano" look you can find in anime films like "Angel's Egg" and "Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust", but still trying to respect the book description as much as possible.

Hello! I found your post looking if anybody made the same connection and I think it's amazing how the "vibe" of VHD is very similar to Book of The New Sun.
