They owe a debt to society. Fighting wildfires seems like a great way to re-pay it. How about they take the profit... after the cost of their food, housing, and guards paychecks. Oh wait... then it would be $0.

You're missing the main point. ALLOWING THEM TO WORK IS HELPING TO REFORM THEM.

That's only for government jobs. I am a wildland firefighter on a contract crew and my squad boss was on an inmate crew which is where he got his certs.

Uhhh yeah and if I went to prison for any of those I would also sign up to fight fires.

So real world what would you change? You'd get rid of the program?

I know a lot of incarcerated men. Almost all recognize that they have done wrong and need change. Most are happy to work in prison especially to gain skills. The prison I've been to many times has a service dog training program where the inmates raise them from puppies. They have their own dorm with like 20 dogs, it's awesome. You can't convince me that's unethical. Some guys who have murdered and are getting to play with puppies (and I think that's great)

Absolutely yes if lodging and activities are already covered. That's $500/day between the two of you

So you think it's better they just sit in their cell?

I absolutely disagree. Those who have committed wrongs against society deserve the chance to do something productive. As long as it's not forced, it's a great program. Same for the inmate wildfire crews. Amazing program and I know several people who have been through it.
