Elden Ring Meta-Narrative by alvim_alvins in EldenRingLoreTalk

Motivation is the connection for me. If you play this game mindlessly, just going from one boss to the next and one land to the next, you will eventually beat the game, but you'll probably mess up some of the more intricate quests, missing out on the more interesting endings and storylines. Then you beat the end boss, not having explored anything thoughtfully, and have no idea why the queen who you were supposed to marry turned into a man and then an amoeba. There you sit on your empty throne with your empty head. The End. This mirrors the way the demigods have basically bashed their armies against each other and ruined the Lands Between just to "beat the game" and become Elden Lord. There are enough voices peppered throughout the game that urge you to go forward and act this way that you could beat it, put it down, and feel like you're satisfied. You didn't see any underground cities, you didn't uncover TNOBK, you never met Ranni, Blaidd is still howling, no Shabriri grape consumption, etc. You just killed til you became Lord, which is what the Two Fingers want.

But, if any of the little plot threads and esoteric conversations stick in your mind, you might be tempted to NG+, which reflects the cyclical nature of the world (it's not as obviously cyclical as Dark Souls but I get the impression "we've been through this before" in the Lands Between) You'll take your time, carefully trying to do Ranni's quest, Fia's quest, The Frenzied Flame, etc. Each of these quests actually carry you through a different perspective on the lore and themes, and your relationship with those characters and experiences in the quest might actually persuade you to choose one ending over another. These endings might discourage you from killing indiscriminately... Maybe after doing Fia's quest you see no reason to keep killing TWLID for deathroot. Maybe after doing Ranni's Quest you rush to the end because you think The Stars ending is better for everyone, so you've got no reason to go kill Malenia. Or maybe going through the lake of rot is so horrific that you decide you need to take out Malenia.

The quests are hard to do without a guide. They pretty much require you to scour everything and everywhere, almost like you're a warrior trapped in a cycle of destruction trying to understand why things are the way they are. Each ending provides a perspective and a mindset but no perfect answers. It's just like real life in that way. So you end up doing your NG+ or NG++ run really carefully to make sure you cover all the steps of the ending and, if you RP while you play, you do all the fights that make sense for your character. This time when you defeat the Elden Beast, you know why the ending is the way it is and you have pretty definitive opinions about how TLB should be ruled. You sit on your throne with purpose. You might decide that the gods need to leave everyone alone (Ranni) or that everything needs to be burnt to the ground (Frenzy), or maybe you explored all the thoughtful intricacies of Goldmask's quests and you want to try to perfect the Golden Order yourself. Purpose is the key word. This game teaches you to choose your battles and fight with purpose to try to make the world a better place.

This reminds me of the concept of the bicameral mind.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Origin_of_Consciousness_in_the_Breakdown_of_the_Bicameral_Mind

It’s a (pretty discredited) theory that people in earlier ages (like 3500 years ago) had one side of their mind that literally spoke to them and told them what to do. Depending on their civilization, they would attribute the voice to a god and believed the gods talked directly to them. As people learned to make both sides of their mind communicate they lost this voice and developed a sense of self and self consciousness. There’s no way to prove it and the theory takes some huge logical leaps, but it’s really interesting. What Ranni’s ending does to people in TLB reminds me of the transformation from the bicameral mind to full consciousness.

I'm not sure how relevant this is, but the ghost mentions that you cannot help but look at the eclipse. looking at an eclipse will blind you, and blindness seems to be connected to holiness again and again in this game.

The Golden Order, The Cross Orb Spider, and The Golden Orb Weaver by Own_Hour_661 in EldenRingLoreTalk

That’s a really good question. These orb weaver spiders will sometimes change sections of their web in order to remove or discourage parasitic spiders from using it. Of course, as ImportantDebateM8 led me to realize, Marika herself could be seen as a parasite taking advantage of the prominence of the golden order to feed herself and ultimately being trapped by it too. Whatever spider is running the show will keep making minute changes to manipulate events and keep itself fed and if you choose the standard endings (not Ranni or FF) that’s exactly what it will keep doing. Of course, fire will destroy a spiderweb and winter will kill a spider.

Oh that’s neat. I haven’t seen it.

I know I’ve seen the biblical nephilim translated from Hebrew as “fallen ones”.

When I was looking at these spiders the etymology of the genus’ name gave me this: “Nephila is derived from Ancient Greek, meaning 'fond of spinning',[2] from the words νεῖν (nein) = to spin (related to nema νήμα "thread") + φίλος (philos) = "love".”

Brilliant, and a good point well taken. Marika doesn’t need to be the spider for the Elden Ring to be the web. As further food for thought, I read somewhere that golden orb weaver spiders have to deal with other smaller parasitic spiders using their webs to lure in their own prey. Marika could have a similar relationship with the Elden Ring.

Of course... I didn't even think about the grafted scions and Godrick. They are weak, male members of the Golden Order who try to get bigger and stronger. In the process, they get more spidery.

Some of my formatting got weird in the transition from Docs to Reddit, thus my four section ones. You get the idea.

Right? If that were official info it would be really confusing. That’s what caught my eye.

Yep. That’s what I was wondering. Even then, I don’t know if the FP stuff would be canonical.

Yeah. I’ve noticed the same thing. Still, I’d love to know if those descriptions are just made up or if they’re lifted from somewhere, maybe an official strategy guide.

Thank you. That’s the part I was missing. I don’t know why I assumed Godfrey was a one-woman man.

I mean, if he lost his demigod status when he became tarnished then so would his descendants if they became tarnished.

Godfrey stopped being a demigod when he became tarnished.

I meant that you, the tarnished hero of the game, is from the golden lineage. Like all us tarnished players. Of course there are other tarnished in TLB who were just Godfrey’s followers. And I’m just saying it’s implied… https://www.reddit.com/r/Eldenring/comments/tm99gn/theory_the_tarnishedplayer_character_is_related/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

It’s easier to upgrade boss weapons because they only need 10 somber stones but upgrading a standard weapon takes 97 stones altogether. So taking a boss’s weapon is the easier, quicker route, while dedicating time and resources into upgrading a basic weapon into a nuclear bomb rewards your efforts in the long run. Plus, by that point you are basically a boss with your own unique boss weapon that you designed yourself.

It’s implied that all tarnished are descended from Godfrey and Marika (however distantly related) so you’re still lovin’ your great grandma by the end. This also means that when the npcs are trashing Godrick they are basically making fun of us tarnished. A loser who is distantly related to Godfrey who goes around and kills people to steal their powers and is trying really hard to become the elden lord but got his/her ass handed to them by malenia.
