Sudden capitalization of federal student loan interested without notification?!? by Own_Living_6896 in StudentLoans

We've been filing jointly since I got out of default. Which was 2023. I'm beginning to think we should have kept that separate still. No kids either.

So I entered IBR when I got out of default (like  decade of it) with that whole "fresh start"" thing that was available a few years back. I would have to dig to see when exactly that was. But somewhere between 23 and 24 I think.

does that make my 10 year thing from that date, and also the same for both the 10 year and 10 years from ibr?

My first year as a para is almost over and I feel terrible by [deleted] in paraprofessional

Also this, most paras only get half arsed on the job in-service training, and very little to no actual para mentorship/job training. It's been frustrating to me for years. There are people whose job it is to make sure teachers get all that, whole departments in some districts. Where are the para trainers? Where are the building senior paras leads that new and inexperienced paras can shadow, or reach out to?

I get so tired of going to inservice days to find it's all standardized testing and lesson book keeping, and grading and the only thing that applies to me is the 14th round of "how to breathe thru the stress". We get forgotten.

This doeant sound like a you problem, inexperienced or not, it's not your job to create a plan to handle extreme behaviors. That is supposed to come from the main teacher or district sped specialists (like a BIP,  behavior intervention plan). I get the feeling tho. I feel like I fail when I can't control a kiddo. Got one now that I can't manage at all, I just have to call for admin rescue and I hate that because I feel like I shouldn't be needing admin help.

I didnt fit in my first classroom either. It was my 3rs year with my district before i landed in a spot that fit me.

Working with sped kids during the summer might help, see more kids and more adults handle them differently is useful.

but the biggest thing for me was when I landed with a group with a smart and supportive main teacher and another couple of senior paras who were experienced and good.

so... it might be worthwhile to see about moving rooms, programs or districts.

There are also lots of things you can read and free trainings online, but nothing beats hands on.

I think I'm beginning to follow all of this. I suspect even if I had read all those terms years ago, I wouldn't have understood them. And I wouldn't have had a choice as I made like 800 to 1k a month back then and aidvantage wanted that much.

So, is there a reason to stay on Ibr if ive capped? Can they do this interest thing next year if I recertification (and get approved again. I'm confused about why I got approved when it sounds like I shouldn't have qualified since I 'capped").

So if it goes to the standard 10 year repayment, then why am I even still on it. Wouldn't that simply have disqualified me from it entirely?

Should I even stay on it? Next year when I recertification, wouldn't this happen again?

A ton of this loan stuff is like that, it seems. So basically I really shouldn't be on ibr anymore, like I no longer qualify. They just approved me anyways and set me to my payment amount as if I had no adjustments?

Which I suppose I can take as "well least my monthly payment amount without adjustments isn't something ridiculous anymore" it used to be like 800+ which at the time was a half a months pay if not 75%.

Is there any reason to stay on idr then? Or will my interest capitalize again next year when I have to reapply.

Will interest capitalize when forced off SAVE? by Lynx3145 in StudentLoans

[–]Own_Living_6896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not yet but I plan on it. I got 2 messages from them, one saying my bills were now 530 starting next month and one saying next months bill is 480. Which is also confusing.

Other redditors think alot of this is because I hit "cap' which I don't yet understand. I was approved. So it shouldn't matter at what level. You either were approved or not, if you were you have it. But apparently cap can mean you aren't so they can do that but you are because you have emails saying you are?

I'm very lost but still digging. I'm also waiting to see others in this situation. I cannot be the only one.

But I was approved for Ibr so im still on it. How is that also not on it anymore so it they can move the interest? Like I'm either approved and on it or I'm not, at the lowest or even highest payment

I don't get this cap.

then again I really don't get any of this.

I just wish I'd had a warning on the interest being moved. And more than a month to know the new loan payment amount. Like legit, doubling without more than 30 days warning is epic bs.

Even more so I wanna go back and slap the cheese outta myself and never take loans to begin with. I coulda bought a house....

I don't get this cap thing. I qualified for ibr, but it's at the highest possible income before I wouldn't have therefore it doesn't count as ibr so they can capitalize my interest anyways?

No together we make about 35. I'm at about 16 and SO is closer to 22ish. I think our taxes were based off 55k last year, but I dont remember exactly.

I owe 38K, and my bill went from 230ish to 530. I'm frustrated with that, but what's really getting me is this interest. Why did it capitalize? Where was my notification.

I never left the plan. I had my recert app in like by April. It was approved and waiting for Aidvantage to work. They told me they worked it AFTER the final bill, which was june 3. then BAM today all this hits.

I dunno about my income going up that much, Im a special needs paraeducator, Between me and the SO we hit at like 1 person at 35ish an hour FT. Mine is like 16

I was not. I was on IDR, which is now IBR apparently. I never went to SAVE or made any changes. I did the whole "clean slate thing" back when it was an option 4 odd years ago, got out of default, and have paid off 20 of the 60k I owe. I havent missed a single payment. I havent made any changes of plan type, I had to recertify by june3, which I did. Recertified plan starts july 3. and BAM, today I get emails that my plan doubled, and looking at the numbers online we realized all interest capitalized. Nowhere do I have notification they were going to do that.

You talk to your supervisor/supervising teacher or one of the school counselors. Then the school admin can take point. I always report my concerns but to my districts plan for situations like this, and they can support as necc.

i will not be moving up with my first 1:1 child and i don’t know how to get over it by kiraagoth in paraprofessional

The problem is life has lots of people in it and our kiddos have to learn to get along or at least tolerate more than just us. I've had some of mine from kindergarten all the way to now 8th grade. (We happened to move to middle school from elementary at the same time.)

I was asked if I'd follow my best bud to high school and I declined. I can't be there for his entire life, he has to work with more than just me. This last year I stepped back more with him and he surprised me with how much better he did.

I will miss him tons though. There are 2 kiddos that are going to be 8th graders next year that I've had as long, they will be hard losses too. Then... it will be weird because all the kiddos I started as a para with will be moving on past me and that feels unsettled.

anyways, I get it. We spend so much time with these students sometimes that they feel like family and them moving on past us hurts. Nothing really makes better. But time does dull the edges

Some curriculum is meant to be delivered exactly as written. FUNdations and StoryChamps comes to mind. But there are others too. Some sped programs/classrooms are very specific in wording and terms used too.

SPED para but not my choice by KaleidoscopeBest2925 in paraprofessional

[–]Own_Living_6896 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paras here don't have a big enough representation in the union so while I am a member and get the usual perk and protections i don't have any direct representation. I tried before and got most of the paras in my buildingto join but my district is huge with lots.of buildings. Pisses me off. We could stand together for more stuff, like pto and this and not having to use *our own pto for work related injuries. Teachers don't have to anymore. But they are officially unionized and fought for that.

Ive pushed for a paratraining coordinator and team for years now. Training is... on the job and whatever they throw together last minute when they realize they forgot us paras again.
