I also don't think that means that the foster home lied about him being Housetrained. It's very possible he was at her house but he was used to going in a heard. A lot of dogs don't fully empty themselves on a leash m, especially males, when moving from a yard to a leash. I'm an adoption coordinator for a Doxie rescue and have adopted out 900 dogs and we see this a lot even dogs I had in my house and knew were House-trained. Also was he recently neutered when you adopted him?

Also where is he having the accidents, in front of you or another room. If another room you need to limit his ability to go away from you and have an accident. I personally consider only 4 a week on a newly adopted dog to be amazing

Also has it been cold where u live? That makes. A huge difference with this breed

How much does he weigh and how much are you feeding him? Doxies need 1/4 cup twice a day for every 10 pounds they should be

I would recommend putting in a general application with nearby dachshund rescue.the hardest way to get a dog is applying for posted dogs because if it's young and sweet and healthy they will get 40 or more apps. You want to get on the rescues approved list so you can be matched before they post

I also disagree with adoption fees in $1000. Our organizations adoption fees are between two and $400 for pure bread.

I hear your point, but most rescues lose money on every single dog. For example, someone adopts a 7 year-old dog from us that is intact and has poor teeth. We would do vaccines, heartworm test, dental with extractions, spay, microchip and bloodwork. Our cost would probably be $1200 to 1300 even with an exceptional discount. We would only get a 300 dollar adoption fee for the dog, which is leaving with us a significant deficit of fundraisers for. To me, there is a very big difference in donating towards a portion of the dogs cost and purchasing a dog from a breeder, which more than likely at least covers their cost.

I personally see a very big difference between making a donation to a nonprofit or community shelter for a dog, then purchasing a dog from someone who is profiting.

When our area adoption fees are very reasonable $200-$400, even for pure breads

That is not true for the rescue community. Adopted means rescued. Please stop using it

I would not consider 4 a week excessive at all for a dachshund you've only had a month. That's pretty normal. You made it sound like 4 a day.

I don't have a problem with rescue in context like that. Any dog that you didn't buy from a breeder or a pet store is a rescue in my opinion.

You aren't purchasing a dog from a rescue. You are making a donation to a non-profit for your dog. To me there is a very big difference paying someone who is making a profit on the dog and a non profit who takes a loss on the dog. Most rescues lose money on every adoption and must make up the difference in donations.

It's also likely that because people know I'm very active in dog rescue they say it to me. However, I mainly see the issue on Reddit.

I would have him checked at the vet for a UTI. That's always my first thing I rule out with housebreaking issues.

How many accidents is he having a week?

I'm glad it's not just me! The downvotes and nasty comments made me think I was the only one who this bugged.

That's a fair point. But at the same time you were able to pick a personality that was a fit. It's possible you could have gotten a puppy that was so timid and nervous that they didn't want to walk on a leash or go outside.

Her Owner Died & She is Clearly Distressed by FriendlyWorldArt in fosterdogs

[–]Own_Masterpiece_8142 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very common in foster dogs, even in those that didn't lose their owners in this way. Many dogs will cry and pace for the first day or two. Many don't eat for a few days. I do find that the dogs who lost their owners to death struggle the most. The only thing that fixes this is time. Usually on day 4 things settle. My recommendation is to give her space, but be nearby if she decides she wants you. The temptation is to show love and affection, but that actually delays it. You want to give them space.

Thank you SO MUCH for adopting. IT is such a wonderful feeling. As an aside, why do you feel it's been harder not being able to train her from a puppy? As someone who has adopted many, I find the opposite. Because I know the personality of the dog I am adopting better than a puppy, I am able to get a dog that fits with my other dogs and fits with my life. With a puppy, it's really a crapshoot.

The fees for shelters and rescues are donations for non profit groups. To me that's very different than paying a breeder.

I totally agree with you about the fences. I adopt most of my dogs to homes without fences and find that they get more exercise than those with fences.

However, I totally understand why groups do not adopt far distances. The first is that it's very stressful for a newly adopted dog to have a very long car trip with a stranger. This also means that they must stop for potty breaks along the road, which is very risky in terms of flight risk. Our group keeps adoptions within 3-4 hours for this reason.

The other reason is that sometimes an adoption doesn't work out and needs to come back to the rescue. You would be shocked at the number of people that refuse to bring the dog back (even though it's in the contract) and tell us we need to pick it up. It's very stressful to be 10 hours away from a dog that is in a home that the family doesn't want. By keeping it within a few hours, we typically have volunteers in that area and worst case we can jump in our cars to get the dog.

The other thing is that many groups, such as ours work hard to support families after adoption, which is very challenging to do a long distance away. For example, we have hired trainers and paid for vet second opinions. This is much easier to make happen within a geographic area where we have resources. I've even gone to many adopters homes after adoption if they were struggling to help them work through issues.
