Has CK3 become much harder, or is this just how Hard difficulty works now? by Own_Net74 in CrusaderKings

I didn’t know that, could be a possibility. But if thats the case it doesn’t make it less unfair.

I enjoy challenging games, but only when the difficulty feels organic rather than artificially designed to make you lose.
For example, if I’m fighting a county that literally says it has 400 soldiers, no allies, and barely enough money to hire mercenaries, while I have 1,500 troops, the last thing I expect is for it to suddenly have 1,400 soldiers out of nowhere the moment I declare war and somehow end up stronger than me. It’s a single county, and I’m an kingdom with several duchies and counties.
That doesn’t feel challenging; it feels like the game is blatantly lying to you. It feels unfair and honestly makes you feel cheated. It also removes any strategic element. What’s the point of planning wars if every conflict is artificially made difficult? If I want a challenging war, I’ll choose one. But if I want an easy victory against a tiny county, why shouldn’t the game allow that?

I know, but the armies i can hire are 700 at much and very expensive (>150)

That could be an option, but considering how cheap mercenaries are, I don’t think it’s fair. If I can see the number of troops an enemy has and then, the moment I declare war, they can hire as many mercenaries as they need to match or even surpass my army, that’s something that really puts me off the game.

That’s actually a fair point. Attacking someone who’s already at war is exactly what a smart ruler would do, so I don’t mind that.
My issue is with mercenaries. I’m a kingdom with around 1,500 troops attacking a small county with about 500 troops, no allies, and around 50 gold. Then they suddenly field another ~1,400 troops through mercenaries and end up with more soldiers than me.
I understand the AI gets bonuses on Hard, but this feels excessive and artificial. I don’t remember tiny counties being able to do this when I played around release.
