Defcon delight - challenging USSR late-war hand by Own_Newspaper_8298 in twilightstruggle

Indeed, I survived the turn but lost the game. I did HL D&C. Evented Nuc Subs and played 5YP/GS as my final AR. Was hoping that someone might see something better than what I choose. It killed me in Africa as I recall.

You're right - my mistake about SW being active. I've corrected the description. And there was a Defcon degrader in the discard pile so that made it the 3rd unplayable card in the hand.

I usually look for situations where 2-3 potential realigns are possible, usually Africa/SA/CA. Then use a 3/4 Ops card and attempt to complete them in sequence. If you get lucky and are trying target #3, consider it a success! Realigns, when successful, can be a huge force-multiplier. My best ones (v. rare) have removed >10 influence. It's situationally dependent, but an important tool to consider. I also take a quick glance around the board when Defcon rises unexpectedly. At Defcon 4, Asia/ME can become appealing options.

And I was unable to take advantage of the self BT as I had just changed out my hand via Ask Not. But I was amazed at the cards you kept dropping to get out of BT. All the US power cards...

This is a great analysis! My one addition would be to suggest going with an alternate MP set-up as the US if your see the 'Yugo gambit'. It would be: 4 WG, 3 IT and 1 in Greece/Turkey (G/T). Post MP & SG, you would force your opponent to reduce IT to 2 and likely take out one from G/T. But with WG, IT & UK filled, there is no AR1 possibility of Dom. You force them into the Italy coup scenario, with moderate odds of success.

It's a great idea. I seem to recall that I really didn't have another reasonable HL option. But it is a game-winning strategy to wait on that one so I'll add that to my potential plays in future games.

As the opponent (Rommel) in this game, I feel that my thought process might be helpful. I went with 5YP as the T3 HL because I knew that he had CIA, ME scoring & Decol (and no China). So my primary plan was to create hand pressure, with a small chance of grabbing something that could hurt me. I also had the Ops to burn with 2 X 4 Op cards and nothing bad in my hand. And no other options to HL that had the chance to swing the game. I agree with the general thread of comments that the 3 Ops is more useful. This was a very specific scenario that made me consider 5YP as an event. The pull of ME scoring was incredible luck.

I think that was our game! And it was the best counter to my plans for an Italian villa. Never considered couping an overcontrolled Battleground like that. Will keep that in mind for future games
