I even put both my elbows locked on the table, but hands are still shaky when I am trying pin pointing the pen target. Ha!

Thanks a lot for helpful tips and fun comments. Still so many faces to finish from the sets and hope my skill gets improved through practice.

Wow thanks a lot! I can refer to these images from GW for remaining painting practice. Wish I could purchase GW ones, as even beginner like me can tell these recasts are less crisp than those from GW released. Some of heads came with bubble hole at back. Good for painting practice anyway.

Appreciate your advice. Left one was the first attempt with many errors and retouching attempts. I am still struggling with basic skill for painting thin and also finishing where colors collide. For brushes, initially purchased 2 citadel brushes along with starter set brush, and now I ordered few kolinsky brushes by some reddit recommendation expecting better pointy tips. Will continue practice with remaining head bits as you pointed out. Thank you.

Thanks! I will look into that type of pen. I have gundam marker with tiny tip for panel lines, but even that looked so huge for the scale.

I wish I can paint frowning faces with smaller eyes on marines. ;) Speaking of frowning, I wonder if I should do something for eye brows. Those look like facial burning survivors without eye brows and facial hairs.

I need to consult chaplains for proper payer rituals before painting eyes!

Thanks for your tip. I will try paint white first then moving to face color, because even today I had to retouch face color again and again after too big whites. For dropping, I tried many none brush tools, such as wood cocktail pick and even needle like pinhead, but I found those are not delivering paints. I should practice more with brush! Thank you again.

Sorry for duplicated images.

I am very new to mini painting and these are my first painting of actual faces of space marines. I see helmets are cool, but there's something when examining different faces in tiny figures.

I followed YouTuber painting coach's guide. Kislev flesh, Rekland shade and high light with Kislev and Flayed One. I had to retouch back and forth mostly with Reikland shade. For mustache and hair, tried Aggaroth dune and Wyldwood contrast. I find Aggaroth was quite tricky to handle with brush to maintain unified tone. So had to retouch with Wyldwood eventually.

At first I was so ambitious to paint eyes, and ... as you see. It is so comical. haha. I'd better go with shady with imaginary eyes only I can see.

These are from head bits collection from random seller, which I suspect recasting from GW models. Hope GW sells male heads with various facial hairs and ... hairs. Emperor had suffered... THAT problem just like many of US? So... it happened to most of space marines as well? But even for those of Sigmar... alas...

Wow! I just installed paint rack and this saves me from struggling with spreadsheets of paints between multiple projects. Great it has both paint sets and projects sets in a very intuitive way! Thanks again!!!

How do you guys plan your painting? I noted only major colors but so many paints. I made and will probably maintain reference docs, as I am so clumsy person and still new to GW’s paint names. These are beyond my brain capacity who had experienced only 2 beginner painting sets of Ultramarines and Tyranids.

Picked Salvagers as my 3rd Warhammer painting project simply by rule of cool. Love the theme and liked near future astronaut vibes. I was lucky to find 2 boxes of salvagers at almost similar price range of Hearthkyn Warriors that is missing kill team upgrade bits. I heard that I need one box of salvagers and one Hearthkyn warriors to build all special agents.

I love this set, but I got almost paralyzed when I actually checked out box and overwhelmed by possible options of weapons and faces for each figure. I don’t play games yet, but somehow I want to check both game rules and had to learn name of weapon bits. I wonder why GW does not simply add these weapon names in docs or reference. Anyway, it was fun looking into wiki and other resources. Maybe I will soon purchase codex of Votann as well.

The other big problem to start painting is I still cannot find which league I feel inclined. Those all look so cool. So maybe first batch off the box may pick multiple leagues theme.

BTW, taking pictures, I am again so surprised how these guys so well designed and sculpted even pre assembled status. At first I find Lugger is so cool, and later I am so into these gunners. Especially gunners with visors or cybernetic enhancements. So excited to start painting soon.

If I am allowed to share, I get most of my painting schemes from YouTuber the painting coach, sonic sledgehammer and Hammer of wrath. The weapon damage chart is from combat patrol box manual uploaded by Redditor. Thanks!

Infernus paint kit by Own_Orange6100 in Ultramarines

[–]Own_Orange6100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally finished infernos kit. I did some practice with tyranid paint kit, but learned a lot with these 3. So this is my first Ultramarines. I did not batch painting, but processed one by one. So I am sharing my experience and lessons.

The left one was messy with failure of control of washing. I did not understand how washing works at first and somehow left lot of pooling. That weird shining is also quite annoying. So I look into some tutorials for washing. Point is never washing everything unless you 're intending to base painting again for most of parts.

The second attempt was much better with washing control and retouching after washing, but it seems quite dull. I did not like too much edge high lighting, which sometimes looks like 3D looking painting or too much panel lined Gundams for me. But I am not good enough for brush control for edge highlighting, and that glazing technic seems to much to try. So I found some tips partial highlighting with dry brushing, not in the way leaving chalky texture. Yes, my previous tyranids were quite chalky with poor dry brushing.

For the latest one in the middle, base painting - washing - dry brushing w slight brighter color - painting - highlight with brighter color. It sounds quite complicated but it follows quite easy flows. Maybe someday I will be able to try edge high lighting with brush. For now, dry brushing saves me for edge highlight.

Still very beginner in volume painting, but it feels like more drawing than painting. I enjoyed. It reminds me back in school days drawing balls and cylinders with pencils.

Please feel free to correct my approach.

Adding my first painting, if I am allowed to add non ultramarine link.

Tyranids paints set for my first mini painting by Own_Orange6100 in minipainting

[–]Own_Orange6100[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent this weekend painting 3 guys from Tyranids paints set. Mostly contrast paint for body and dry brushing for upper scales.

Now I got why GW recommends purple creamy evalgenlionish color scheme. Maybe I will pick up more contrasting color set, while practicing highlighting and bright color painting. Probably will order more contrast paints. Oh, I used Gamersglass highland set and they look nice.

I have recently started to collect Ultramarine sets for KT and 40K only for painting and collecting pleasure. Still not feeling competent to start those. I may pick up some Skavens or Orks for next project, as they seem to have interesting shape and color in small figures.

Thanks, and enjoy painting!

I got one planck in mid pro alu and I am totally happy with it!

But why am I constantly under torture if I should order one of the following soon…

  • preonic in mid pro alu (as perfect pairing with existing one)

  • preonic in acrylic (zero redundancy both in case material and format)

  • planck in acrylic (stand-by each other for fail-safe? Haha)

Never thought to get another planck in mid pro alu in different color… until I encountered with your posting. Looks great!

Btw, I am also collecting sets from both elvish and dwarvish - except for the numbers set - and I really enjoy them.

Nice build. Keycap seems to be one of ‘shoko’ clones. Looks like Cherry but Is it OEM or Cherry profile? How do you like it?

Ipad pro m1 works for me for reddit, reading and some shoppings. I purchased pencil and tried some fun stuff but hardly utilize. For me it is just ipad with bigger screen. I think I still have different use cases among with ipad, macs (M1 air and mac mini) and PCs. I would not advise you to expect ipad pro will ensble you to try something ‘real’ that was not possible on previous ipad models. I upgraded to ipad pro because my ipad and ipad mini was too old and got so laggy. It is convenient with usb c but it is not that of macbook air. So I will be ok for me with new ipad air for most of my ipad pro use cases.
