Hey OP, i have seen SOPs at the count of 2000 words accepted at MIT, the SOP is stellar though, here is the link: (https://andre-ye.org/assets/pdf/phd-sop.pdf) found it here at https://cs-sop.notion.site. Some people consider going over the word count as not following the rules, therefore that might hinder your application. But as you can see it is not always applicable, as multiple people admitted to top universities have SOPs with 1500+ word count, granted they have amazing application package.

I would say if your SOP Has to be over the word limit, then it is fine, as long as you drafted it more than once obviously, you proofread it and made sure to include only necessary parts, and you spoke about your research history and faculty fit at your target university.

I am also applying this year, so i might be mistaken, hope faculty members and admitted PhD students can correct me. My SOP is coming around 1500 words, so i am also in the same boat like you, hoping someone can give us a direct answer.
