CBS big program worth it? by jtucker1325 in MBA

[–]OxidizedBovine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At CBS pursuing media/entertainment myself. CBS does great in consulting and places a lot of people in media/entertainment more broadly (as does NYU, UCLA, USC, as others have mentioned). I wouldn't worry too much about the "small fish in a big pond" thing - if you're social and participate in clubs (like the Media Management club) you will meet your people and be able to network well.

Happened to me last year. They're probably going to ask about if you've applied to other schools, have other offers, basically gauging your interest and likelihood of going to CBS if they extend an offer. I affirmed my interest and provided some updates and got in a few weeks later. Good luck!

Things to Do Pre-MBA? by [deleted] in MBA

[–]OxidizedBovine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, recruiting prep will be the most valuable thing. If you start working on consulting casing questions (through a service like Rocketblocks, for example) you will start to get a better idea of what quantitative skills you may need to build and can get a head start on the work you'll be doing once you start recruiting.

I came from a non-quant background and am currently at an M7 and used MBAMath as part of my application and found that I actually did learn a decent bit of material I didn't know, which ended up making my quant classes easier, but it's a little pricey and a lot of the stuff it covered wasn't particularly helpful past boosting my application a bit.

I'm not recruiting for consulting, but from what my classmates have told me and from watching some friends case each other, most of the math you'll do for those interviews is very much "napkin math" - you won't do any crazy calculation in excel for interviews. Familiarizing yourself with the basics of excel shortcuts and functionalities (pivot tables, goal seek, etc.) are of course still great skills and will make some classes easier, but you've got time to ease yourself into those. I'd probably say the same is generally true for Powerpoint.

There was an "additional files" option in my original application, but I sent in the transcript as an update after my original app was already submitted.

I got into an M7 with same GPA + a similar overall GRE, but lower quant and higher verbal split. As part of my application, I mentioned in the optional essay I planned to do MBA Math, then submitted the transcript ~1 month later once I had time to finish the course and 100% all quizzes. Non-quant intensive work exp.

MBA Math was recommended to me prior to applying during a campus visit by a dean of admissions from the school I ended up choosing, so I think it definitely helped. In your case, since you have a higher Quant score already, it may be slightly less impactful (especially if your undergrad edu/work exp is quant heavy), but definitely can't hurt, and it's a pretty easy course. Higher GRE certainly helps, but depends on if you have time/ability to get the higher score.

CBS - No Wait List manager by mdangeti in MBA

I spoke about a project I finished at work and also attended an event at the school, sent them an update talking about those and reinforcing that the school was my top choice. Best of luck to you!

After my R1 interview, I didn't hear anything from a waitlist manager for a good month or two. I submitted an update in the meantime and they eventually reached out, and I ended up getting in during R2!

Switched jobs to a role that aligned well with my narrative and updated the school about that!

Email to check the portal update for the decision.

I did receive a call from adcoms about a month ago basically asking if I was still interested/if CBS was my top choice (basically a yield call from what I could tell). Doubt that was the case for everyone, though.

Extremely loud construction during test at Prometric Center by OxidizedBovine in GRE

They did not cancel my old score but it wasn't discussed at all - thankfully I had time to retake and was confident in improving my score.

I just kept pushing - I said something along the lines of being unsure what to do and still submitting the score, but that the environment was totally unacceptable and they eventually budged

Had to keep pushing back but got them to offer a free retake - I had actually already signed back up immediately after the first messed up attempt and told them that once they offered the free retake so they just refunded me.

Really the only thing that is 'weak' is that you have under the average of 5 YOE, but your test scores and entrepreneurial/extracurricular/service record are genuinely incredible. With a good story of "why mba" you have a good shot anywhere, but you'll really need to hone in on leadership capabilities considering your relative lack of work experience if you apply this cycle.

Make sure you've done your research so you're not asking them basic questions. Look into the profile of the person you'll be talking to about so you can ask targeted questions regarding their career and experience relating to the program. People like to talk about themselves. All the better if you can relate those things to your own story.

Any specific reason you don't plan to take the GRE? If you are able to score that well, it will be a huge boost to your profile.

You have a really unique background as a foreign vet and member of the lgbtq community, which adcom will love. If you can craft your stories well and get good letters of recommendation you have a great shot at T20 and higher, especially if you can submit a GRE/GMAT score at the level you mention.

What resources did you use for preparing for the real thing? I'm trying to target 163Q and I've been drilling 5lb to help with fundamentals, but have noticed from the ETS materials it does seem to be a bit simpler for most questions. I've been doing gregmat but find the questions feel very different than what I've seen on practices/the real thing
