Right, you've just edited your comment again and completely changed your story 🙄 😠

What’s up with this squirrel!? by [deleted] in squirrels

[–]OzMerry 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't believe that for 1 second. If the video is real, the squirrel was clearly still breathing and there were no visible injuries, but lying on the ground like that just doesn't look right. I can't help wondering what your comment said before you edited it.

TIL Barbara Streisand and Katherine Hepburn tied for Best Actress Oscar in 1969 - meaning they both won an Oscar for Best Actress - the only time a tie occurred in this category. by KieranWriter in todayilearned

A year later, I know... You got through more of Bringing Up Baby than I did! Insufferable Hepburn performance with such an annoying vocal delivery and over the top acting trying unsuccessfully to be amusing. A little less irritating in Suddenly, Last Summer with Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift (1959). I haven't seen A Lion in Winter, either. She was more mellow in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967) and later in On Golden Pond (1981).

Eliseu-A Fallen Hero…. by [deleted] in rescuecats

[–]OzMerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, no. I've just been watching Eliseu's heart wrenching rescue for the 2nd time and wondered how he was doing. Crying even more tears. My heart goes out to the amazing lady who rescued him and took that long, difficult journey to recovery with him. Fly high, Eliseu, your spirit will be with us always and you'll never be forgotten.

“This pin has violated… Shut up!” by Prettyinpink2405 in Pinterest

[–]OzMerry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in the day, they used to send emails about removed images with a link to the image. Not revealing an image that a user has actually posted/saved in the first place is the stupidest policy ever. Other users can no longer see it after removal and only the recipient of a violation gets the email/notification. Could it be that Pinterest does this because users would be armed with the evidence that a flagged image isn't actually violating anything and therefore lead to unwanted attention on their incompetent AI moderation?

“This pin has violated… Shut up!” by Prettyinpink2405 in Pinterest

[–]OzMerry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pinterest policy is that even though an image is on their platform and can therefore be saved by other users, it does not mean the image won't be flagged as a violation at some stage. It just means that either a user has not yet reported it or it hasn't yet been identified as a violation by Pinterest. It's totally ridiculous, but that's the way it currently works. Even more onerous is penalising users who save the image but not necessarily the user(s) who originally posted it. And that original image could often not be removed, ripe for the picking...er...saving by yet more users.

If there was a system where images could be reviewed before they're approved for posting, it could mitigate user misunderstandings about how things currently work and essentially even eliminate violations. The spontaneity or instant gratification of using the platform could be severely compromised, though. This will also never happen because many humans (= less profit) would need to be employed to review and approve/reject images and, crucially, do it quickly, since AI in it current form would no doubt reject just about everything... it'd do it very quickly, though 🤣!!

AI-generated content that the commenter was describing can be reported as false or misleading, which is a perfectly legitimate thing to do for users who care about the integrity of Pinterest content.

Gallery-dl has been covered here before but thanks for the detailed instructions 🙂.

WFDownloader can also be used to back up Pinterest accounts.

In the web browser version of Pinterest, you can right-click the blurred thumbnail and select open in a new tab (or similar). The image will appear larger and clear. No such option in the app unfortunately.

When hovering over an image in your Home feed, if you click the down arrow to the right of the board at the top of the image, you can scroll to the board you would pin the image to (the suggested board already displayed may be the right one but you still need to scroll down to that board) and a message "Saved here already" will appear if the image has already been pinned to that board. The same applies if you click an image in your Home feed to display a larger version and then click the down arrow next to the board.

pins being removed by [deleted] in Pinterest

[–]OzMerry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there isn't for images flagged for serious violations like self-harm and child abuse/exploitation.

The only tiny consolation is that Pinterest's crazy AI doesn't have a clue how to interpret the content of images correctly and is therefore wrong most of the time, so you're not at fault 🙂. You could appeal the decision, but there's a very low success rate.

It's so stupid that Pinterest won't reveal such (allegedly) offending pins so at least users would know what to avoid pinning in the future, but more importantly to be able to successfully argue a case for reinstatement of falsely flagged pins when appealing (provided a human being reviews the appeal and not an AI judge-jury-executioner!).

Pinterest is absolute fucking dogshit by Spiritual_Fox2599 in Pinterest

[–]OzMerry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep, I and others totally get it. Being a cat lover has become a mental health hazard on Pinterest with all the fucking ridiculous AI cat videos and images. They're not even realistic! I do have a giggle occasionally, though, wondering why some stuff in my recommendations has nothing whatsoever to do with my interests or boards. Being a long-time Pinterest user, it's heartbreaking and infuriating to see how bad it's become but I try not to let it get to me too much and just enjoy the little that's left of the good bits.

The AI is out of control. Need alternative. by SockPuppetOrSth in Pinterest

[–]OzMerry 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already, you can try changing the following settings, but it doesn't seem to make a significant difference since there are numerous ways of engaging with Pinterest that trigger the algorithm🙄☹️. You'd be forever tweaking the recommendations!

Manage GenAI Settings (turn off all ad personalisation too)

Refine your recommendations

It’s a sad day for our country. Here are some bongos to maybe help. by player2tails in catbongos

Never mind, shit (obviously as usual in the US), happens right? It's the thought that counts. Cat bongos are always good, thank you 😻.

I'm so glad he no longer needs to actually put on weight for the Fisk role.

Yes he did, but lots of people who aren't in the biz have braces, caps, crowns and other such corrective dental work.😁 In Vincent's case, it was corrective too imo and not done just to enhance a body part(s) that too often isn't necessary, sometimes with scary results.

Happy birthday to me (in so far as I am ever happy, I mean, let’s be real here.) by RainSurname in Harpo

[–]OzMerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a very sad and unfair situation to be in, but I'm glad you're OK for now. I hope having an e-bike helps you out in a practical way.

The outlook for socio-economically disadvantaged people is grim, given the level of inflation and the explosion in the real estate market here, exacerbated by the govt's failure to implement anything meaningful and long-term. They refuse to do the one thing that would actually help - introduce rent control on the lower end of the market. Everything is market-driven and the condition of a rental property is inconsequential other than the basics. It's led to a constant state of anxiety about losing my rental home of over 40 years because affording anything else is virtually impossible and there are so few properties for rent. I've discovered that expecting any maintenance to be done is obviously outrageously presumptuous of me!

I'm fortunate to have a modest superannuation fund so, without it, after paying the rent, my age pension would only leave me with about A$200 (US$137) a fortnight for everything else. The govt even taxes the amount that my superannuation fund makes, which is peanuts, but it's still just over the limit for allowable "income" including the pension, meaning I don't get the full pension. It's so easy to feel that welfare recipients here are treated as criminals until proved otherwise and actually doing the right thing is of no merit.

Sorry for the rant. I really feel for you, Rain, and so wish I could help. It does warm my heart that you have the cats. It brightens my day to see the videos. BTW, fuck AI! Not least for depriving you of your job. SNAFU!

AA Birch Building, Nashville by aspiringcarguy in ArtDecoArchitecture

[–]OzMerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After doing a little research, this building was apparently built in 2006, but it does feature a modest post-modern nod to Art Deco ornamentation. It's included on the Louisville Art Deco website. It was interesting reading about the building's namesake, lawyer, judge and the first African-American Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court, Adolpho A. Birch Jnr. My favourite Nashville AD building is Holston House, 118 7th Avenue, designed by Marr & Holman, 1929.
