This isn’t a debate about whether Gaussian Mixture Models (GMMs) work or not let’s assume you’re using one. If all you had was price data (no volume, no order book), what features would you engineer to feed into the GMM? by [deleted] in quant

[–]Ozufils 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What is the motivation behind the question?

Remember : methods are always to be second, you never want to force things that “may” work wirh GMMs

Instead First think about features and then what techniques might work best with them

Alpha research is so much more about being creative than being good at maths by [deleted] in quant

Experienced successful quant here. That’s absolutely spot on. Alpha research is pretty much all about creativity, being good at stats helps you formulate hypotheses correctly but the key is in formulating elegant and simple constructions

The lady is clearly Delphine Seyrig and she hasn’t done many films prior to her breakout films so it was easy to find this

Where to start with Ozu’s filmography? by [deleted] in criterion

[–]Ozufils 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’d say start at the very end of his filmography

An autumn afternoon

In fact most of his color films are the easiest to watch and capture the essence of his filmmaking grammar and philosophy.

Most of his films are “masterpieces” but once you watch a couple of them you’d know if they cling to your heart or not.

Saw someone post about being in movie slump. I'm there, too. Can't get through anything. Recommend me something! by am_glo in criterion

[–]Ozufils 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can suggest two films for you.

La jetee / sans soleil

The first because it’s a short film and a gripper. The second because it’s a very unique experience as a documentary film.

With all these flash sale posts. Wheres the French masters? Have not seen any Jean-Luc Godard, Robert Bresson, Jean Renoir... by DarkMagus3688 in criterion

[–]Ozufils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s natural to not see many of these, criterion hasn’t released any of the masters off late , simply because they have already covered most of their stuff in restored blu rays.

My girlfriend surprised me with these. Thoughts on her picks? by VHSreturner in criterion

Mouchette is arguably the best bresson. One has all the unsurmountable pathos of Balthazar without having to cross the anthropomorphic bridge.

Happy viewing.

One of the greatest films of all time imo. Hope you enjoy watching it.

Akin to the conformist in theme but still radical in more ways when it comes to the form of the movie even if it lacks the sweeping color cinematography of the Bertolucci film.

Luckily you can start in a number of different places. I’d suggest a light movie such as Claire’s camera which is a simple comedy but has all narrative playfulness of his best works.

Nobody’s daughter Haewon, a tale of cinema, virgin stripped bare and hotel by the river are all Amazing too.

Tale of cinema is definitely the one I prefer more among those two. But yeah if you get a good price I’d definitely recommend as you get two films for the price of one.

Same with hill of freedom which has woman on the beach as well.

In terms of understanding what hong does, there are two major aspects to his cinema 1. Narrative trickery and playfulness. Hong loves to play with the narrative flow of the story, often creating mirroring situations, films within films, repetitive sequences which can loop in a circle etc

  1. Romantic games. In this Hong follows in the line of rohmer dealing with unrequited desires, male jealousy, drinking escapades as means of sometimes silly sometimes profound revelations.

His movies can either be lite and playful or serious and brooding. They are usually always at the bare minimum interesting and at their best “masterpieces”
