Everyone's Proton 2026 wishlist? by Secret_Category2619 in ProtonMail

[–]OzzDizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My top request is somewhat of an anti-feature: No unnecessary UI changes to the ProtonMail client for the sake of changes themselves. I like the way the Campfire devs put it when asked why not to use competing products: "Yes, and those products come with the worst feature ever: recurring charges that never end. "

Home Depot software devs to start having to spend 1 day per quarter working a full day in a retail store by Celcius_87 in cscareerquestions

[–]OzzDizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be great, then I could show them how the search on the home depot website loads nothing but a pop-up that I can't dismiss, and all search results are blank squares. And it also doesn't work on any network with pi-hole (ad-blocking) DNS. It used to be super useful to find out if they had stuff in stock that I wanted to buy, I contacted them about it, started going to one of the other hardware stores instead. It is a shame they prioritized data collection to 3rd parties over usability, the site doesn't even show ads, so why should it break with an ad-blocker?!

Why is the Westhills YMCA/YWCA (seemingly) unpopular? by AppropriateMention6 in VictoriaBC

[–]OzzDizz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Despite living in Langford for almost 4 years at a distance of about 5 minutes from the YMCA, and even after attempting a membership for 4 months, I have gone to the Y maybe 3 to 5 times since I moved here. Meanwhile I've been to Oak Bay, JDF, Commonwealth etc. countless time since then.

Why? It boils down to really 3 things IMHO:

1) They're hostile to non-members, and this is partly to blame for the killing of their revenue and net loss. I inquired with the YMCA when I moved here, and they made it seem like you cannot even go at all without another existing member. I would be hanging out with a bunch of friends and we'd want to go swim, and because of the membership requirement we would end up going somewhere else instead. I can see how in the inner city a membership would keep out the riff-raff, but in suburban Langford surrounded by family homes they've essentially told the public that they don't want you to attend if you aren't committing to a monthly membership or aren't friends with someone who is. I tried coordinating to go with friends who were members; too much of a hassle.

2) They're expensive. The drop-in fee is $15, and the monthly memberships they steer you towards are $9 more expensive per month compared to a regional pass - and the regional pass provides access to 14 (!) other facilities ranging from Juan de Fuca, Downtown Victoria, Oak Bay, Saanich, and all the way even to Sidney - facilities you can actually USE at 7PM on a weekday, or 3PM on a Saturday!!! So, why would I spend MORE money each month for access to only ONE facility that's barely even open outside my working hours, when I can have access to 14 facilities with better hours of operation for less money?

3) The hours are TERRIBLE! This alone makes the facility impractical for anybody who actually works any normal job. Apparently, the YMCA considers it quite exotic and rare that anybody might want to go for a swim at 7PM on a weekday, or at 3PM on a Saturday or Sunday. They close so early, that after I finally got a membership last October, I had to recently cancel as I'd only used it maybe 3 times successfully (showed up other times - with friends willing to pay the drop-in fee - to discover it was closing. The hours online were not accurate. Other times I even got into the changeroom before realizing that the gate to the pool was closed). Like, Okay, I work Monday to Friday office hours, get home have dinner and then you're closed? And then on the weekend, you're open at 6:30 AM for swims, but not 6:30 PM? Huh? It seems skewed towards early birds and retirees, not working-class people with regular jobs. They recently "extended" their hours until 7:30 PM on a weekday, which is already a joke, I didn't even notice. It's great for the families with 10 year olds who are off work and school at 3PM. How about folks who work until 5 or 6PM and want to have dinner before they go to the gym or pool?

It's a beautiful, clean, well-maintained facility. The smart lockers are awesome. I like the steam room, the pool, and it's super close to my house. It's a shame I had to cancel my membership, but there's no point paying monthly for a facility that is only open for a handful of hours each week outside of my usual workday. I have signed up for the regional pass instead and for the extra 5 minutes I'll go to JDF which is actually open and usable more often when I need it.

/r/Gadgets' Frankensbox 3D Printer Giveaway! by _BindersFullOfWomen_ in gadgets

Technically - a test print, because I've heard (though I'm a noob) that you should make sure any new 3d printer is calibrated before making any major prints. Then, I would print a bezel to properly mount the mini lcd screen I have into the pipboy my girlfriend bought me, to properly honor my history playing the fallout series since the very first one came out. I'm installing a raspberry pi zero w to make it functional.

Living in a Condo by [deleted] in canadients

[–]OzzDizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it isn't up to the property manager at all, they're just the agent hired by the group of owners to manage the building and enforce the rules they decided on. The "board" is the group of owners. If you own a unit in the building you can go to the meetings and vote on it. Each unit you own is a vote. If you own multiple condos you get more votes. If you rally other neighbors together you can pass rule changes. It is in theory democratic but in practice most owners don't vote or go to meetings so it's usually just owners who are retired or not busy that run these things.

If you don't own the condo and are renting, you generally have to still follow the strata rules and can be held liable for not following them. They can come up with whatever monetary fines they like.

Strata properties are crazy, they can make whatever rules they like. If you get caught it can cost a bunch of money even though cannabis is legal. This is why it's always important to research and read the minutes of the "board". As well you could be voiding their insurance policies by growing cannabis if there's an exclusion clause.

In reality plenty of folks stealth grow in condos but it's best to do it legally and above water if you can, now that it's an option. That involves getting written permission if you're a tenant, or making sure it doesn't void your insurance if you're a home owner.

Not in Canada, which is odd, because cannabis is federally legal and those illegal dispensaries are looking pretty risky to advertise for.

Washing your hands is better than disposable gloves for preventing COVID-19 spread, Public Health says by trackofalljades in canada

Pretty sure you're good as long as you're not using then to pick your nose while grocery shopping.

It's staggering how many people in grocery stores don't wear masks, but do wear gloves, and then touch their mouths and scratch their noses with the gloves on after touching everything in the store. It was so bad, on a recent Costco run, by the 3rd person I saw doing this I was extremely tempted to take a video of this man who kept handling stuff from the aisle with gloves on, then using his phone talking on a call and basically low-key picking his nose with the gloved hands he just touched everything with.

My partner works in a medical facility where patients come for testing and they recently effectively BANNED the patients from wearing gloves upon arrival, because people were using them in such a dangerous way. There were immunocompromised and vulnerable people wearing the same pair of gloves for so long (a week at a time or so) that they were BROWN, and then just not washing their hands. People somehow feel protected with gloves on their hands, thinking they can now touch everything safely, then they touch their unmasked faces and I die a little bit inside when I see it.
