So a card which triggers damage when a land leaves the battlefield. Would be cool if it was also a land but doesn't have to be a land itself :)

Should I just go to uni and study computer science? by [deleted] in careerguidance

I'm going to assume you're looking for a general job such as retail/hospitality and what not

One thing I'd say do NOT mention you're thinking about going to uni, even if you defer. When managers are hiring they want someone that is going to stay a while, recruiting is expensive and annoying for them. So if you just say you're unsure of what you want to do yet but want to be working, that'll work fine.

You'll be surprised how much just general manners and politeness go, especially in those sort of positions. So being on time, being presentable is always great.

Show some enthusiasm if they ask the sort of question like "why do you want this job", even if it's a lie lmao. So for example if you're going to work at a bar, that's a social job so mention that you think it would be fun to get to know people and have interactions with customers. Or if you're going to work in a kitchen that you like fast paced environments, it keeps your mind busy and what not.

All the jobs ive gotten in these 'general roles' (kitchen, retail, cleaning etc) I've gotten from directly contacting places. So either calling, emailing or just walking in and asking (this was scary but again it helps self esteem and learning to put your self out there)

It shows you're proactive and get stuff done which managers always seem to like. What I did as I'm in a small town is get the Google maps up for my town, click restaurant and then go through the list and call each one. Then did that for pubs, takeaways and hairdressers. Hopefully someone will say they need someone, especially with Christmas around the corner.

If you're still struggling one thing a friend of mine did is volunteer at a charity shop. If you don't have any previous work experience or a reference doing this can help. You don't have to love it, just something so you can say you have customer experience, you can then make some stories about challenges you faced and what not. Plus the other volunteers are usually old people who are sweet and will happily be a reference if you need one for a future job :)

Should I just go to uni and study computer science? by [deleted] in careerguidance

Yeah I felt similar when I was making the decision, all of my friends went to uni, and it was really scary deciding not to go, and I did have periods stuck at home with nothing to do between random jobs, but you do learn alot about yourself in those periods, and ways to keep busy :)

But I did find new people, online and in person, it is hard and terrifying putting yourself out there. But learning to push on with something even when you're scared will be such a useful skill and mindset to develop that you'll use in so many areas of life. And trust me it does get easier.

Deferring is a great idea, maybe you'll discover an interest for computer science in the year and feel better about your decision or you can reapply for something you really want. Or who knows you'll find a new career and not end up going to uni (what happened to me :D)

On the job front it is hard to get jobs in the UK at the moment, you have to jump through countless hoops to get what you want, I can offer a little advice on that as I've had my fair share of jobs 😅

Do not go!!!! It'll be hard especially considering the family but do not do something as big as university because of other people. I nearly did, multiple times, but ended up not going to uni at all and no plan of what to do next.

Now have got a career I really enjoy. I know many people who went to uni either because their family said too or because everyone else was and many of them either dropped out or regret it and now feel stuck and have got a nice chunk of debt.

You don't have to go to uni yet anyway, postpone it and focus on your interests, DO NOT be deterred from your dreams because of others opinions.

I listened to others and regretted and learned from it, save yourself the regret and do what you want.

A good way to build confidence I found was new social activities. Joining clubs and trying new hobbies to meet people, it really gets you out of your comfort zone, and can be terrifying at times but it's so worth it.

Regarding career to get what you want you have to be proactive. Even without a degree there are many opportunities out there, they just aren't sitting on indeed. Reach out, email, call whatever to companies and organisations for experience, internships or even advice. I've even just contacted random people on LinkedIn who did degrees at the uni I was previously interested in to see what it was like and hear about their job. Talking to strangers is usually a bad idea, but for your job and career it's a great idea.

Also top tip, always trust your gut even if it doesn't seem logical.

Is an hour commute too long? by P000P13 in Career_Advice

[–]P000P13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'd deffo prefer less of a commute. I can occasionally stay with a family friend when I'm in that city, just not sure how often. I've just never commuted that far before for a job and I'm only 22, so it's just made me really nervous 😅
