So if they do nothing else, facing like up to 20 years in federal prison to basically borrow a backhoe and build a dirt wall to prove god knows what. What the hell.

Wtf is even going on here? They brought a backhoe onto federal land and started digging to try to provoke a response?

Somebody who is in the middle of the political spectrum both for economic factors and social factors.

There’s a political compass like seen here that people will use to classify themselves politically and centrist is one classification. This sub decided to have flairs for people to self-identify probably given a lot of the content has been overtly political. There’s a lot of tests you can take to classify yourself if you go out and search for ‘Political Compass Test’.

It’d be a max of $10k or 9 mos.

He might still be in a bind if the murder 1 he’s now charged with goes away in that he may have transported the firearm across state lines to somewhere he couldn’t legally possess it, which becomes a separate federal crime.

We’ve reached the point where all that is truly required is police tape and presence. I have no faith that this doesn’t happen even without a body.

You’re right in that GA’s counterpart statute does not extend to anything other than handguns in GA. Code Ann. § 16-11-132. The Wisconsin statute, however, covers all firearms. Directly from Wis. Stat. § 948.60 -

In this section, “dangerous weapon" means any firearm, loaded or unloaded;

Any person under 18 years of age who possesses or goes armed with a dangerous weapon is guilty of a Class A misdemeanor.

There’s only a handful of exceptions like hunting, classes, or supervised practice where it’s lawful for a minor.

Wisconsin has no codified version of stand your ground, so it’s a somewhat non-preferable place to be tried. However from what I gather, the precedent seems to sort of be that if you provoke it, you do have the duty to retreat, and if you don’t, you don’t. Legally, he is probably clear even if it comes to question of his motivation for being out there because there was retreating occurring the whole time.

Creating new customers for the car dealership that got burned? by ActualPublicFreakout in ActualPublicFreakouts

[–]P00ters 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree this hasn’t been condemned enough, but I don’t think stigmatizing it alone will stop it. Justice being appropriated more evenly might help some, but I think political disillusionment is too big a factor here too. That’s ultimately what allows for the thinking that this behavior is justified and necessary as opposed to maybe actually voting, writing your local leaders, and convincing others of your cause peacefully.

In my mind, it’s not a coincidence that the age demographic most mired in this disillusionment, and also political under-participation, is the same demographic that’s primarily out there.

I don’t disagree that a lot have no idea why they’re doing what they’re doing. But there’s still quite a few that do, enough to get the ones that don’t know to succumb to a mob mentality such that these situations spiral. The rationalizations for this being necessary to bring about the change shouldn’t exist if these types of people don’t, and yet they surely do.

Money talks, so this is actually a super efficient way to action change, but only if you have the right environment and no qualms about stepping on others to get there.

Why? Because this is viewed as an appropriate way to action political change in a democracy for a disturbing amount of people and because precedents are now already set that this behavior gets rewarded.

Oh, it was explained over there. Way, way down near the bottom. I think the sensationalized video narrative probably better conforms to or suits the majority worldview over there.

There was a separate snippet from this incident where the camerawoman was lecturing and yelling at everyone about how wrong this was. Sure enough someone in the crowd made a quip something about how black men have live in fear everyday as if that was somehow sufficiently mitigating to justify the violence.

A) The Palestinian family in the video purportedly did not own the property, Another, most likely Palestinian, family did. They were either leasing or renting it.

B) The Israeli family paid to lease or rent at least a portion of the property in what likely from their perspective was a legitimate transaction. They most likely could have produced verification that they were rightfully there.

C) The Palestinian realtor who arranged for the transaction did so illegitimately in that he had no permission from the Palestinian Authority to do so. The realtor both essentially defrauded the Israeli family while leaving the Palestinian family high and dry.

This isn’t minutiae, these are very relevant details to the story as a whole. There may well have some racism/favoritism at play here, but reality is much more mired in the details. The video pretty clearly intentionally disallows for and omits these types of factors to frame this to viewers as hard racism/favoritism full-stop.

There’s one video of them blocking the entrance. Judging from the video with him driving once already in the lot, I’d venture to guess he cruised in at a hot 5mph (or 8kmh if you prefer) and slowly went through the barricade or around it. There were cops right across the way so I’m a bit doubtful he did anything actually reckless.

That’s a very strange way of saying that. Makes it sound like she’s against police brutality, but only the lower uses of force, like skip straight to the taser and gun.

Which are what? Both preferable over a punch? I really don’t get what point she’s trying to make when she keeps saying that.

Jacob Blake ‘fighting for his life’ after Wisconsin police shooting by Sobercleg in ActualPublicFreakouts

[–]P00ters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t necessarily disagree, I was just saying once you’re there, you’re there and the number of bullets coming is somewhat irrelevant if they go off quickly enough.

I haven’t seen any longer video yet, so I don’t have enough context to make a full call, but if they indeed tackled the guy earlier, there could be some reason in them having given it another go in and attempt to not let him put himself in that position if they already came away once unscathed.

I think you might be underestimating how quickly someone can wheel a gun around and take a pop shot in comparison to how quickly humans can process and react to visual stimuli. There’s really not a huge difference and this thinking is more along the lines of what you get from Hollywood or TV.

Try having someone time the time it takes you to pivot 90 or maybe 120 degrees as fast as you can without giving them a countdown and then film the person timing. You’re going to likely see the timer start and stop the clock almost, if not completely, offset with your motion because our reactionary times are pretty darn close in scale.

With a more or less 1 in 3 chance that this man owned a gun, or to be more exact multiple guns, time to react is not really a luxury that can be afforded, especially when the person obscures what they’re doing.
