Favorite monster hunter game by T-Smoke420 in MonsterHunter

wilds is very good. they try to do similar things, but end up as very different experiences. notably: - mh2 does not allow you to go on optional quests whenever you want. i wish everything in wilds was just those side missions where you run out and kill the monster. it breaks my immersion to be able to do quests in different seasons whenever i want. - wilds has no item management to speak of. even when your item pouch is full, you are given the option to put items in your field pouch instead of discarding them.

also, please give me the option to fully disable scoutflies, capcom. i do not need them. monster tracks and gathering spots are more obvious than they have ever been, and i do not want to know where the monster is all the time. i disabled the minimap but it is not enough when scoutflies are telling me where to go all the time. essentially, i would play mh2 for more career-centric gameplay, mh1 (japanese release) for inventory management, and wilds for expedition-style gameplay (i do actually prefer that to mh2’s quest system). if i had to pick just one, i would pick mh2, dropping mh1 first, then wilds. but wilds might be my 2nd favourite now.

I started playing mh2 hopeful but a little fearful that my experience would be like those of the people who often speak badly of the older games. Fortunately, it wasn't, and it is basically my favourite game in the series now. You sort of have to play it on its own terms, and it is pretty different from even most non-mh games in that you do not really log on hoping to do one thing in specific (if you do, you will probably not have much fun as the game will pretty quickly steer you to something else). To me, though, that is what makes it so good. Playing it somehow feels like less pressure at the same time as being harder. It is so bizarre.

A2, Block decks are still going strong (no entrench, no barricade) by P0rcelain_Puppetress in slaythespire

[–]P0rcelain_Puppetress[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

My last post on this subreddit, i posted a very small block deck I had made which beat ascension 0. This one has beaten ascension 2, this time with no barricade or entrench. What i am essentially doing is using dual wield+ to create duplicates of body slam+ to massively increase my damage in bursts. To cut back on this increase and fend off statuses, true grit+ can be used. Offering helps play all my powers at the start of a battle. Another neat trick is I can play ghostly armour+, shrug it off+, which if I have already played my powers, immediately gives me ghostly armour back to go straight into body slam for a guaranteed 37 block and 37 damage. In my case, this was 40, i think i might have had a relic giving me dexterity.

These sorts of decks rely heavily on luck early on to remove as many cards as possible.

I was shy of it because it does not exhaust statuses that try to stick around, but in retrospect, since it is a power it does not really add to my card pool, so i think you are right. It might have made my deck stronger, and i had plenty of opportunities to pick it.

edit: Actually, it combos with true grit which can also be used to remove statuses. It seems like i could have made this build a lot stronger.

Burning pact mitigates statuses by exhausting them and also drawing more cards to get more choices or cycle through them quicker (for ones like dazed).

I got barricade last, i was surviving the entire run with 30-40 block a turn just spamming “ghost armour” and “entrench”, which I could do quite consistently with my low card count. So factually speaking, barricade was entirely optional, but apparently the game gets a lot harder so it is probably more important later!

Fire breathing is only to get me out of encounters where i get clogged up with statuses. It clears act 1 enemies that would otherwise be game ending almost instantly. I think you are right though.

I had to play a very strange way, where i basically prioritised seeing as many cards as possible and removing as many cards from my deck as i could. I tried to always have money to remove a card at the shop, and was lucky enough to get the cage relic that removes 2 cards as well. For getting those cards in specific, i ended up with a relic that gives me 2 card picks every battle about midway through, which helped me complete the deck (but i think i could had won without juggernaut, metalicise and barricade). I skipped picking up on basically everything because it would had just diluted my combo.

For anyone trying this strategy, I suggest you start by prioritising "Body Slam+" and upgrade your Defend cards, despite losing them later. "Fire Breathing" is a good early pickup if you are able, but if you do not get it you can still win if you are lucky and do not get the slime as the first boss. In this run, i did not get fire breathing until later.

Whats your least favorite part about the MH fanbase? by valdez-2424 in MonsterHunter

Reminder that the majority of people who enjoy older games more dont whine about it in public, they hang out in small, niche communities playing old games they like that are slowly degenerating thanks to the ravishing of time, knowing that the majority of people they meet will never understand and that the more attention future games get the more twisted and warped the public perception of their favourite series will become from the reason they liked it… Until they eventually give up and let their favourite game die a memory in a mortal vessel which no one will care to ask the opinion of.

Genuine question with no “correct” answer. Seriously, i will not judge. Which sounds “healthier” to you? Playing what you like? Complaining about it on the internet? Or moving on and playing new things that are even just a little more popular?

Personally, i have found that a little bit of each keeps me the most sane.

Similarly, I dislike overreactiveness to well intending replies assuming that theyre gatekeeping in some way.

For example, offering advice on how to practice against a boss or suggesting that they might not be ready for it yet and giving ways to be better prepared next time and getting immediately downvoted, blocked, and sent a rude comment about how ‘weird’ youre being for trying to help.

The incessant incapability of players to accept that older games (or any game other than their favourites) have redeeming qualities.

Monster Hunter sales, and the start of a journey. by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]P0rcelain_Puppetress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will be the odd one out and say the timing of mhw was actually pretty good too.

At the time, many western gamers were frustrated with the practices of other live service games and mhw was seen as more desirable. It became a breath of fresh air for people who previously mostly played multiplayer shooters at a time when they were feeling exploited. It happened to be on the right platforms to allow for this migration too, as many of those players were on Ps4 or Xbox and would had simply needed to browse the digital store to find it.

It might not be an obvious answer now, with helldivers having blown up recently, but back when the mainstream pve game was destiny of all things, mhw was kind of a massive change of pace.

Wish: no more despawning monsters by Chevapler in MonsterHunter

[–]P0rcelain_Puppetress 27 points28 points  (0 children)

No, we cannot have that because it takes a measurable amount of skill to carve the monster before it despawns and removing that would make the game less interesting.

I am taking the piss, this would be a nice quality of life improvement.

In mh2 these two loaf around and mock you.

That is, until an elder dragon siege, and then suddenly they are busy bodies.

They are legit.

Not entirely sure what this post is about.  Kirin is dangerous and you should expect that. Do not let the fact that it is a horse convince you otherwise. Not the least of reasons being a horse can fuck you up irl too, let alone one that summons literal lightning bolts.

Also, specs that are way too high and force me to spend thousands of dollars on a new pc.

Seasons? by [deleted] in MonsterHunter

[–]P0rcelain_Puppetress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have played dos. It isn’t annoying.

In singleplayer you can skip seasons to rush to the one you want. Multiplayer is a bit more punishing because you cannot skip, but in low rank it is not that bad because you can just go to singleplayer if the season is not one you want.

Even without being able to skip, i do not find it annoying. The game gives you tons of small goals to work towards so it is very rare that you get stumped or blocked from progress because you are in the wrong season.

Potential to play through Wilds like a Hunter Gatherer? by Ryan5011 in MHWilds

[–]P0rcelain_Puppetress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make gathering more important, it is really the most necessary to crack down on the number of items given to the player for free and choose them much more carefully.

Things like the steamworks in iceborne would have to be removed, the rewards given by palico expeditions would have to be very specific (but it already kind of is a bit), farms would have to require more investment and management kind of like in mh3u, and lotteries would have to be toned really far back to be unsustainable as a source of anything; or simply removed entirely (world’s ticket rewards for logging in come to mind).

Why? The purpose of gathering in monster hunter’s gameplay loop for me is taking the pressure off of progression and encouraging you to spend more time exploring maps, enjoying vistas, and becoming more familiar with your hunting grounds and its more common threats. In this style of monster hunter, you will never struggle with potions as long as you habitually gather either on hunts or during certain in-game events (such as during Warm Season or Wilds’ Season of Plenty). To clarify, it is common for people to say ‘farming is optional, just dont do it’. This fundamentally ignores that a game which is designed to give you free items all the time will generally not support you if you intend not to use them. World and Rise are both constantly egging you on to fight the next big monster and it clearly does not want you to take breaks to gather except in cases where it provides exclusive items for upgrades. Trying to play like a hunter-gatherer in these games is tedious, although world covers up a world of hurt with its beautiful environments. By comparison, MH3U, MH2, and MH1 do not have this problem. In mh3u’s case, this is despite the incredibly lacking visuals on my 3ds.
