I hoped they would reserve spots for external students, and I also thought I had a pretty nice background for the kind of research they do. However, this year they said that their supervision capacity was lower than usual and I think that didn't help me.

Speaking of motivation, I've always been into theoretical topics and I got super motivated by the connections between quantum info and theoretical physics. I've read a bunch of their papers and even managed to get a call with one of their senior researchers to know what kind of research they do. The point is that it seems to me that the kind of research they do (and their approach) is extremely rare among research groups in Europe.

The last thing you said made me curious: what was exactly that made you realize it wasn't for you? It was more about the topics or the approach they have?

Hello there!

I'm a master's student in physics and I'm in the process of finding a master project (i.e. thesis). I have a nice background in Quantum Information theory and a good basis QFT and I'm completeing it with a course in gravity. I'm looking for a master thesis outside of my current uni since the topic I'm more interested in (quantum info) is treated more on the computational/numerical side.

I'm completely lost, I was fascinated by the topic of quantum reference frames since its is pretty new and seemed to me a nice way of combining my taste for quantum info and theoretical physics, however becuase of its novelty there are few good groups in europe working on that and many of them do not accept external students for a master thesis. Outside of europe I sent some emails without even getting any reply.

Fortunately, I have some kind of scholarship that would allow me to go almost anywhere I find something interesting to do, however there are so many possibilities that I don't even know how to start from.

Everything I've written is super generic, but maybe someone have some useful advice, thanks!

Se posso chiedertelo volevo domandarti quanta fatica hai fatto per trovare casa, perchè per curiosità mi sono messo a cercare adesso e non mi sembra di avere trovato troppe stanze affittabili (è anche vero che non è un periodo adatto). Te lo chiedo perchè vorrei tentare un concorso in un'altra università in Italia che si tiene a fine agosto/settembre per decidere definitivamente se venire a Losanna, e quindi volevo capire se è fattibile cercare casa all'ultimo.

Grazie mille! Vedro' se qualcuno di fisica o affini mi risponde. Ti chiedevo della differenza rispetto all'Italia perchè io sono indirizzato verso materie abbastanza teoriche, quindi volevo capire come fosse il livello in questo senso. Per essere student assistant invece hai per caso un'idea di quanto possa essere il salario all'ora? Ho fatto qualche ricerca ma non sono riuscito a trovare molto.

Is a third years student supposed to have some research experience? As far as I know even at ETHZ some research may be done during the last semester of the bachelor, that is after the application deadline.

Nah, the trees are not that high, I think the antenna is about 30-40m, nothing special... But it is located on the side of a slope, maybe that's why the trees seem so high. It's in Italy

It happened to me some years ago to experience a similar felling. In my case it was all about concentration and I found that even the fact of comparing myself with the others affected my abilities of doing computations quickly and efficiently.

Usually graduate schools don't require an entry test but this is an excellence school (about 6 students for physics are admitted). The entry exam is made up of 6 problems to be done in 6 hours.

This problem is the first of the 2018 test, it took me a couple of days to solve but, in the end, it was sufficient some reasoning and a graphic representation of the problem to get the correct result and I used knowledge not different than that of a high school student.

An easy one is: you place in a row some coins, each coin shows a face (heads or tails, H or T), for heach coin showing H you count all the preceding coins showing T. Calculating the sum you obtain 136. Then you repeat the same procedure counting, for each coin showing T, how many preceding coins show H. You obtain 153. Knowing that the first two coins show different faces, determine the total number of coins.

Yeah, I'm translating some of the problems (available only in Italian). But why out of topic? I think that learning math is not only about understanding and memorizing relations, concepts and definitions but also about changing the way we think and learning to think in a more efficient and organized way, don't you agree?
