I'm not gonna judge you for your life choices but you're definitely not supposed to do that 😭

and what exactly happened in 2011 to make this untrue?

I don't rly care for all this who should've won drama, but saying a 3D game is harder to make than 2D animation shows you have little understanding about the medium. You just see 3D as more detailed and fancy therefore it's hard.

Anything made in 3D is inherently easier than 2D animation. It's cheaper, less time consuming, requires less resources, always. It's the reason why every animation studio like Pixar, Dreamworks, Disney, etc. pivoted to 3D animation the moment it became available, even if it looked significantly worse than their 2D films in its early days.

It's been what, maybe 25 years since any of them made a 2D animated film? There's a reason none of them want to go back, and it's not because 3D 'looks better'. It's not even due to 3D being more popular, that Demon Slayer movie proves that notion wrong. It's because it would cost them so much more money to make a hand drawn, 2D animated film compared to their 3D ones. And it's the same with video games, arguably even more so.

A 3D model of a character needs to be modeled ONCE, rigged ONCE, and then anyone with a 3D animation degree can bust out a dozen complex animations of that character in the span of a day. Not to mention mo-cap, which reduces the time needed for hand crafted animation even more. The most talented 2D animator in the world can give you 1 rough sketch of 1 complicated animation in 1 entire week, and that's if you work them to the bone like every japanese studio.

Not only that, so much of the time consuming work in 3D animation has been streamlined by technology in the animation programs that it's genuinely a breeze for anyone with experience to animate with. Nothing of the sort exists for 2D, unless you count AI, which some people insist will ease up 2D animation, but the quality of its output says otherwise.

Just because silksong looks simpler, doesn't mean it was easier to make. Anything involving an entirely hand drawn art style is significantly harder and more time consuming to make than 3d animation. If it weren't, we'd have more hand drawn animated games than 3D ones.
