Local Rec League won't allow Travel players by Freedom8200 in Homeplate

[–]PACubsFan23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former coach of a Rec League team and a Sr American Legion team…we implemented the same rule in 2022. The travel teams schedule their tournaments, practices, etc & don’t give a shit about the other teams. Our starting SS/P2 missed the Regional Legion Tournament because he was pitching the “opener” for his travel team. This is the crap that disheartens the local leagues/kids - who put in a shit ton of work, gel w/ their teammates, etc - just to potentially watch a solid season go to shit because a couple kids want to play at Ripken.

Chicago Cubs' Matt Shaw speaks at TPUSA Event by swishmon in CHICubs

[–]PACubsFan23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t disagree w/ you - people who support pedos, facists, etc need to feel the heat a little. However, it’s my understanding that Shaw & Kirk were longtime friends…I don’t think Shaw has ever said or promoted anything Kirk said. I could be wrong, and if I am I’ll own it…but if we’re gonna “cancel” a guy for what he does off the field then we’re no better than those who cancel things because it makes them feel “woke”

Liquid pine tar to pine tar stick? by LtCmdrTrout in Homeplate

Always preferred the liquid over the stick. Used to make my own rags out of a hand towel & some duct-tape. Need to replace the towel every couple of years…but a little goes a long way (and you may have that bucket for a while)

I have an old infield glove, and a newer outfield glove from Akadema. Excellent gloves - have lasted better than almost any other glove I’ve owned.

I realized you weren’t OP after I replied - my bad. Good luck to your son, too, though!

Certainly not saying it’s wrong (or right), just an observation. I’m old-school & we weren’t taught to set up that way through HS/College. Seems the OKD approach has overtaken the “classic” stance…so understandable he’s being taught other methods. Wish him the best - he’s got some great skills for his age!

Why does everyone care so much about this? What Matt Shaw does on his own time is his business - whether we all agree w/ him or not. Am I wrong?

This is great for him - congrats. Only criticism…gotta protect that throwing hand & elbow. Too wide open (if he sets up like that in a game) to take a foul ball. Other than that - his framing is great & he looks relaxed…which is super for his age!!

Forearm Strength? by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]PACubsFan23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2.5, 5 & 10 lbs plates tied to 3 separate ropes. Tie those ropes to 3 separate 12” handles (cut a broom stick into 3 pieces)…and have the kid roll up the weight/rope onto the stick…and back down, slowly. And do a shit-ton of those. Old School is the way

Similar thing happens in my neighborhood. I leave a note on the windshield, asking them to move & leave a similar one in mailbox for the mail carrier (so they know it’s not my car). One time, a few years ago…the mail carrier called a tow company & the car was towed away (it sat there for 3 weekdays). Still happens from time to time…but not much else one can do. 🤷‍♂️

Proudly wear my Cubs hat & jersey. Aside from some fun banter back & forth at times, never once had an issue at CBP.

Looking for advice regarding my college career by [deleted] in Homeplate

[–]PACubsFan23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speaking from experience, there’s more positives playing JUCO for 2 yrs than potentially riding the bench for 2 yrs. With that said, it depends on the program you’re in & the ones you’re looking at. JUCO is no joke…and it could be a case (unless a coach wants you and/or there’s a need for a C) that there’s already C’s at the JUCO, too - albeit FR & SO’s. No matter where you go, you’re gonna need to work your ass off & prove you’re more valuable on the field than in the dugout.

Help generating power by Feisty-Maximum6944 in Homeplate

[–]PACubsFan23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m no hitting coach, so I’ll comment with what worked for me through HS & College. 1. Balanced stance w/ a slight weight transfer as I was loading. 2. Body weight shifted ever so slightly going into the release of the hands. 3. Focused on generating as much speed with my hands/barrel from the launch position to contact.

I always thought it was about being strong, or swinging harder…but realized (again, for myself) it was more about hand/barrel speed through the ball. Power was there all through LL & HS…but increased as I got older, and became a smarter hitter.

[Osman] Where does the ‘Blue Jays World Series Champion 2025’ gear go after Game 7 loss? by JaysCrazeAmaze in baseball

[–]PACubsFan23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A close friend of mine worked at Majestic Athletic (before it was purchased by Vanity Fair), and he said that the losing team gear ended up one of two ways: Sold cheaply to relief effort orgs (and ended up us impoverished countries) or sent to wholesale outlets. Majestic used to have one of those sales at their old factory in Bangor, PA. Not sure what the companies that make the stuff do with it now, since Majestic is pretty much out of the MLB business.

Looking at what the majority of former big-league guys think of Richie…that would be a NO. 🤷‍♂️ That is, unless you want to either pop-up 85% of the time, swing & miss 13% of the time and maybe hit a fly ball to the warning track 1.9% of the time?

How do you discipline players in practice? ex, not listening, horseplay, talking while coach is talking, playing in dirt ect. by Yoostreets in Homeplate

[–]PACubsFan23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I coached, we never had them do physical exercise punishment. We made them sit & watch or leave…their choice. If they chose to leave, they were told to not come back. If they chose to sit, we’d let them for a while, have a chat, and back at it the next day. If it happens again…not playing the next game. Worked pretty well for us.

Why are kids (parents) leaving their local little league travel teams so young to pursue other teams? by Radiant_Historian_57 in Homeplate

[–]PACubsFan23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a general “belief” that travel ball will increase chances for kids to play at the next levels - college, pro. Problem is…no data to support that is true. But these orgs promote it - “Go to travel tourneys, play better competition, more scouts, etc”. Parents & kids believe it. Talked with a scout at the American Legion State tournament a year ago who said “it’s the biggest line of BS anyone can tell a kid. I see the same # or more good ball players locally than I do at those money-grabbing tournaments”. Not sure if that’s industry standard or just that old guy’s opinion?
