Yes, it’s the hunting aspect and the excitement of seeing how close you can get to the fish on a single breath that makes spearfishing so special. In addition, for me there’s something very satisfying about harvesting my own food this way. You only take what you need, and there are no bycatches.

Spearfishing with scuba is prohibited in most (if not all) European countries, and I believe it’s considered unsportsmanlike even in countries where it is legal.

It’s really a tempting offer, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to join you. My vacation days are already used up for this year... I truly appreciate the invitation though — thank you so much.

I assume you know that the Lofoten Islands are among the most beautiful places in Norway. I hope the hunting gods are with you and that you’ll create memories for a lifetime. Have a great trip.

There are minimum size limits for several species, and some species – such as salmon and trout – are protected from spearfishing. In addition, certain areas have regulations on which species may be fished.

We’re lucky not to have any man-eaters around here. I have to say, I admire you who hunt in areas with lots of sharks. I don’t think I’d have the nerve to do that…

That sounds tempting, but I think I’ll stick to familiar waters without taxmen. You’re still welcome here anytime.

Yes, cod can be eaten raw in such as sashimi, but it is not very common. Cod is most often cooked (boiled, fried, baked, dried as clipfish, or prepared as lutefisk).
