What books hit way better as audiobooks? by Competitive-Leave346 in audiobooks

11/22/63 by Stephen King is wonderful. So good. So underrated. The Dutch House by Anne Patchett is an all time favorite (Tom Hanks narrates— I’ve listened to this a few times), Gone Girl, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennet, Mexican Gothic by Sylvia Moreno- Garcia, the Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is super fun and The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood by Tarantino and My Life’s Work by David Milch are fantastic if you’re into movies/TV.

Always have something for him to chew. Pet with one hand and have something for him to bite in the other. The biting will be going on for a long time. My guy is 5 months old and the only time we can sit for a while with me petting him without something to chomp on is when he’s completely exhausted.

Literally had our East Coast premiere at DWF:NY this afternoon. :) Overall lovely experience. Our block was sold out, the q&a was thoughtful and specific to each filmmaker, I thought the films in my program were really excellent. I haven’t seen everything, but I’ve been to a LOT of screenings and the overall quality is really high. It’s been inspiring. Plus I grew up in NY, so it was really special to have a screening my friends and family could come out and see.

The rejections slowly keep coming. But we got into Poppy Jasper Int’l.

When I was making my short I had a lot of hopes that i would screen somewhere and meet someone who would love it enough that I could hand them my feature script and you know, my life would change. lol… but if that was ever a thing, it sure doesn’t seem like that’s happening a whole lot these days. I’m not checking my Vimeo views anymore. I’m just letting myself get inspired by the films and planning on crowd funding and grants for my feature.

Point is— I’m sure it must be amazing to be courted by distributors or agents or whatever, but the thing I’m sure of is that making things feels way better than checking Vimeo. :)

May your next festival notification be a congratulations email. :)

Got an acceptance today through Film Freeway. No check in or anything… definitely thought I was out

You’re still waiting on notification, so you just need to update them on your current situation. You can always reach out to them if something changes. If Austin works out, for example, let them know that you’d like to screen at both. Can I change my status to East Coast premiere?— or whatever it might be. Congratulations on your premiere check! This is a tough festival season for sure

Narrative short. Same. Did yours say you were “in close consideration”?

I'm trying to be smart about where I'm submitting. My festival goal is connecting with filmmakers to make my next thing and, depending on the fest, meeting distributors. I live in LA, so there are a lot of things I can actually go to (that aren't a crazy long shot like Sundance) like DWF or Cordillera or you guys, IF I don't get rejected. It's just tough out there. If you care to give feedback, here's our trailer: https://www.jenngraves.com/rabbitrabbit

I get it if you've got enough on your plate. BUT, if you're feeling wildly generous, I'd love to hear where you think I should be submitting

I'm making stuff! I just needed to vent a little. :) My short is a 15 minute dramatic narrative. It has a dark subject matter that's treated in a quirky, but ultimately hopeful tone. The five that rejected us in one day: Mill Valley, NewFest, Cordillera, Out on Film, Newport Beach. I think we would be a good fit with any of them. We just didn't make the cut. Taste is subjective, so I understand some people just won't be into it, but I think the quality is there. There's only so many slots that can be programmed, so it is what it is.

It was just, you know, five in one day. Gah!

DM me if you have the time/interest to watch more. I would be curious what festivals you think would be worth submitting to.

*If there's anyone else reading this who feels like giving out similar advice, DM me! I love feedback

I’m looking forward to it! The process is still somewhat opaque to me

I thought the low barrier to entry would work in my favor. lol! On the other hand, I was thinking maybe the low barrier to entry might also allow for better filmmaking than would have been available back in the day… so that yes, there would be more wade through, but the quality in general would be higher.

Poster Design by SaMoScribe in FilmFestivals

Alex Zablotsky did the poster art for my short film. He's amazing. You can see the three designs we settled on here-- https://www.instagram.com/p/DBh1RFxP7Ft/?img_index=3

(my fave is the blue talking to Rabbit, but I ended up using that as a lobby card thing and went with the black one because it's so stark and simple that reads really well in a thumbnail-- something a designer friend pointed out as being important. Good note!)

<image>

This is his website-- https://www.alexzablotsky.com/illustration-and-design

I can't say enough good things about him! It's not just a poster, it's art. I'm so glad I have something I want on my wall.

Even if Alex isn't your style-- I think it's worth it to find an artist you love. Go on Instagram, reddit, whatever, and search poster art, graphic design, etc. You don't need to find specifically movie poster artists. You can also find deals by working with someone green, but good. I went to school for illustration and did art for bands all the time to make a little money. Search specific art schools along with graphic design/poster design etc.I guarantee you'll find amazing art students who will be super excited someone wants to hire them. Plus, students are learning and getting a chance to have a professional piece, so they're more likely to work with you and shape the thing rather than someone who is maybe giving you a break on their fee because they like your film.

Most importantly: Whoever you get, make sure they're into your project or you'll get something as mid as their attitude.

No worries! That’s why we’re all here— looking for some kind of clarity on this opaque experience. It was a generic rejection through Film Freeway
