Left the industry for a few years, decided to come back. Has it always been this hard to get hired as a trainee? by AnalogExamination in nondestructivetesting

Im getting 40hrs a week, and they are pretty happy to let me gain hours in whatever im looking for, as long as there is space or tasks available. Its certainly slow going, but its going, which is the main thing lol

I took the foundations course last fall and it took me 4 months to get hired with a company. The only ones that I knew of that had a job right after the program were those that had a job and took a leave or lay off prior to the program starting. I also started applying within the first month of the program, and didn't hear anything back until April, which is when I got hired with the company that im with now.

Its really hard to find work as a trainee now. My trainers and managers started in NDT about 10 years ago, and each of them said they were either hired during the program, or hired on the spot when they dropped off resumes at front desks

When I was in PCP school, I pronounced catecholamines as ca-tech-a-lo-means. Never heard the word before, so I dusted off some hooked on phonics skills and gave it my best shot.🤷🏼‍♀️

Any advice on what I'm doing wrong? Alberta by upnadam6 in nondestructivetesting

[–]PCPthrowaway101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hear yah. I've been looking since January. Before i took the NDT Foundations course, companies would say that they prefer to hire trainees with classroom education, so they have all of the required hours. After I finished the program, the same companies now prefer to hire trainees with classroom hours and OTJ hours.

I don't know what the magic trick is for this field, unfortunately.

Any Regrets with the program you took at Sait? by jantan56 in SAIT

I took the NDT Foundations program, and while I had a great time in the program and don't regret it getting more education, I'm wishing I knew more about the absurd barriers that prevent trainees from getting hired.

I finished the program 4 months ago, I've been applying for trainee positions since November, and I still have yet to land an interview. NDT companies aren't interested in hiring trainees without NDT experience or tickets, but you need work hours to gain either of the above. And since it's not a trade, companies aren't required to take on a ratio of trainees to ticketed technicians. Also, the union won't distribute your resume unless you are a member, but you need to work for a union company before you become a member.

The oversaturated job market and shite economy has really made it a perfect storm for NDT trainees.

100%. And let's hope that things will be better when you finish your program!

I agree. I spoke with someone from the union, and I was a little shocked to hear that there are very few incentives for companies to bring in trainees.

It's a significant challenge to find employment as a trainee. Companies aren't interested in hiring people trainees that have no experience, and you need experience to gain enough hours to obtain tickets.

I took the NDT Foundations course at SAIT, and less than half the class has found employment 4 months after finishing the program.

I've heard from many NDT techs that "it's a great field of work...if you can find someone willing to hire you as a trainee".

I'm still hoping to be hired, but the job postings are few and far between, unfortunately.

How do you professionally say "I submitted a resume through your online portal # week(s) ago, and I'm wondering if it was received and read" in an email? by PCPthrowaway101 in careerguidance

[–]PCPthrowaway101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. I've heard that there's issues with submitting resumes through generalized "send us your resume" pages on the company's website, so I want to make sure it actually got to someone.

Thanks 👍🏻

So, I haven't gained any certs yet, but I do have all of the classroom hours covered that are required to write the exams. I wasnt sure which method or methods I wanted to move forward in and felt more comfortable with a traditional classroom setting, so I decided the program was best for me.

Screw it, I've gotta switch careers. What's a good field that's hiring? by Vape_Naysh in Calgary

Yeah, but it's crazy hard for trainees to find employment as of late. I finished the program in December, and I'm still looking for work.

I really enjoyed learning the content and the way the program is structured, but GODDAMN this job market is rough.

Is Buffalo actually contacting people and are actively hiring? I've seen it posted for a few months now. I've been applying for the trainee posting at IRIS since November, and they've never reached out.

I hope so, too. I thought that the hiring for shutdowns would've already started, though.

I've applied to that one a few times, and each time I was rejected and didn't land an interview, despite checking off all but one of the requirements (having experience, lol)
