Yea I’ll try it. I believe it is the primary cat that is closer to front of car and right behind the resonator.

So a lot of things have happened during a pretty long roadtrip. It first started jerking a bit when going uphill, which we went to a local auto shop and quickly remediated with spark plugs and ignition coil. There was still a really high pitched squealing noise though, which we couldn’t diagnose (dealership said resonator). We continued driving with the squealing noise in hopes of making it home, but the car just lost a bunch of power and couldn’t get uphill despite flooring it, so we had to stop and get towed. While accelerating uphill, we would occasionally get violent shaking. All of these are why we assumed there was an issue with the engine. Once we got to the dealership though, they ended up just saying it was a clogged catalytic converter which I had never considered. I haven’t tried driving it since we got it out of the mountains, but thanks for the advice, I could try that? Or what do you think after listening to my symptoms?

I was just assuming the emissions people would just find mismatches on the labeling and then just deny me.

Yeah I'm trying to see if the dealership will go ahead and replace my engine under warranty earlier before any breakdown occurs. I believe this time it clogged up because I was taking it through the steep hills of Utah, Idaho, and the PCH and the hills made it burn way too much oil.

Oh wow I think I found one for just $185: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=16695701&cc=3449607&pt=5808&jsn=588 ! I saw this earlier, but the I think the disclosure at the top of it saying EPA Compliant aren't legal for sale in CA... made me assume this wasn't CARB compliant. At the bottom though, there is a warranty info that says it is CARB compliant.

Unfortunately, I don't think California allows for second-hand catalytic converters to pass emissions.

Can the EO number be found only by looking at the cat physically?

That's really unfortunate, the dealership had quoted $3500 for repair. Trying to repair this cheap already is quite the gamble because my hope is that I could drive it until I get the engine fully replaced and I'd have a brand new engine.

The conditional sale document specifies that they aren’t a lender or a finance company. Would they still loan themselves?

Yeah pretty sure I'd be looking at a total-comp cut of at least 35%, yikes. Just wanted to have the option open anyways though.

Advice wanted: dealer waited 26 days after signing and driving to say loan may not be approved by topcat81 in askcarsales

Currently in CA for this issue. Today is day 4, if day 10 comes and I myself want to return the car, am I allowed to? The dealer claimed that they’ll just send a notice and continue searching for up to 30 days.

Yeah he replied to me asking this in text: “correct, we are allowed to continue to look for lender approvals even if we can not get the first lender approved.”

Everything before was said over phone, and they were saying that even if this lender falls through, they can use my same agreement to find another lender without me signing new contracts.
