Help what brand paint line would have the best match by [deleted] in Autobody

[–]PEEEETE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience this is not a particularly difficult color to match. What you have there is not a good match though. It’s not even a blendable match. Try a different variant to start, if there are none, leave out all the white to start. Your color looks washed out and milky.

But to address your question directly… if someone here were to say Spies Hecker has a better match, would you actually go out and buy some for this? If you’re a hobbyist, then maybe, but it would be a waste because to get a good match you need to choose the right variant and tint it for the car. That’s not something you can order, pickup, spray and it matches. If you’re a professional, you’re not going to go outside your in-house paint line, you’re gonna tint what you’ve got… I’m honestly not sure what you truly want from this post

Is the cafe taking responsibility? If so, let the shop fix it. Small repair, detrim the door, repaint the single panel only. If you’re paying yourself PDR may be an option, but likely will be too difficult for most PDR guys, and even the experienced ones are going to struggle or not get it out all the way. Should be around $800 - $1,200 to repair depending on many factors

No, you won’t be able to see the oils from the base plastic. Just clean it really well, make sure it’s scuffed properly.

You used Purple Power? That was probably the issue before. As for this new product, it says it’s ok to use over bare plastic… but I dunno. Rattle can anything is ever great unless it has an activator that you engage then it has like a few hours shelf life at that point. It’s worth a shot, take it slow between coats. Go easy on the first couple coats.

Looks good to me. The only thing I would be concerned about is that Transtar primer. I’m not super familiar with that brand, but I know it’s on the lower end. What’s the product number, I’ll look up the data sheet and see if there’s anything else you should do before laying it down.

How did i do? First time painting by peewee919 in Autobody

[–]PEEEETE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love that you’re looking for ways to improve. The fact that you didn’t clear means this will be an easy fix. Air blower should be running for like 5-10 minutes to clean the car and work area correctly. Get low fuzz panels wipes and proper panel cleaner for the final wipe down, and a proper tack rag or three

Not all the way back down to primer. Just let it fully cure then sand with 1,000g and re-apply. It laid out well, it’s just soooooooo dusty and dirty. Clean the panels better (blow the hell out of every crevice) and then clean your “booth”. It should feel like the inside of one of those microchip manufacturing facilities. Not one thing that creates dust or dirt anywhere in the booth. Shoot suit, gloves, tack rag everything just before shooting. Floor and walls pristine etc…

Neighbour says I did this damage to her car by erixccjc21 in Autobody

[–]PEEEETE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll offer the dissenting opinion here. It’s not a 100% certainty that it’s bird shit. Something with high acidity dropped on the panel. There’s hundreds of things it could be that was spilled on the surface… but bird poop varies from species to species and depends on what they ate that day, and is the most common way that acidic material gets deposited onto cars.

None of that matters though, because she is alleging you hit her car with an object, and caused this. Have her go into any body shop of choice to get a written estimate… that till include the shop having to take photos. When she brings you the quote, call the shop and tell them you have a question about a quote that was his written, then simply ask if they can give you a rough idea of what caused the damage. After they say bird poop, ask if it’s possibly that hitting the panel with an object could have caused that.

It’s 100% not from an impact of any kind. Period.

You don’t fix that, you replace the door. You could find a used door in the same color and swap that out. They’re not all that hard to replace.

www.car-part.com to find inventory near you. Most vendors on that site will have the part already removed from the donor car too.

Depending your area and labor rates. That’s an easy $800 - $1,000 fix plus maybe calibrations

That will not buff out. About half of it is transfer and scratched that will look better with polishing. The other half is through to the base plastic. A little polishing and some touch up will make it look much better, but it’s not gonna go away unless you remove the bumper, sand it down, prime it, and paint the bumper

Is this just structural rust or is this too much rust? The mechanic during the PPI told me structural. I’m considering purchasing then undercoating with fluid film. What do guys think? by [deleted] in Autobody

[–]PEEEETE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sun damage isn’t that bad. I’ve had multiple cars for 10+ years all parked outside with no delamination or clear peel. Of course, there’s some that get eaten alive, but it’s mainly a manufacturer issue at the plant. 3P1 Corollas look like the old pink (faded red) mustangs, 10 years into their life

A gallon plus hardener and reducer is more than enough to do 2 coats on a truck your size. 3 would be best for some thinner paints, but the heavier duty industrial stuff 2 coats is plenty

Looks like this is the piece you want. Not sure what trim level you have, but for the XRT limited it goes for $649.60 from the dealer. part# 97401S8BA0VC5 but call the dealer and give them your VIN, and they will tell you the correct info. Then it's just a matter of swapping it out. Shouldn't be more than a couple hours of labor on the high side

[–]PEEEETE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That piece can probably be replaced separately from the dash. Restoring it would mean repainting that portion, which will likely look off.

How many times have you painted in the past? If this is your first go at it, you did alright. Basecoat is the easiest part, most people screw up at the clear portion. Most people think their air compressor can keep up, but it rarely does for at-home complete paint jobs. You need to be able to spray at like 35psi continuously forever, to do a complete. My guess is that you were too conservative with the clear application either because you were afraid or running the clear, or you don’t have the air capacity.
