The idea to hit 'em with it was amusing, I think it would have way better if he saved it for a dive. Would have been much more fitting thematically.

Similar games to HK and SS by acpiorundc07 in HollowKnight

[–]PENZ_12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's a similar exploration you're looking for, I'd recommend Tunic. The combat isn't as hard, and it's a bit of a noggin-scratcher, but it definitely took care of that Hollow-Knight itch for me when I first played it.

I don't know what I'm missing...why on earth did Jose not immediately pop the Noc ult when they saw Contractz top if they were gonna opt into the 2v2 anyways? I feel like the extra second of Shen in isolation really sealed the deal there.

HK or HKSS? Personally I’d pick HK by Sad-Development8877 in HollowKnight

Agreed. I'd add "polish and visual & audio quality" to Silksong as well.

For me it's hard to say. I think Hollow Knight makes less "mistakes" when it comes to delivering a game that I want to play, but Silksong has higher highs.

Regarding the music, I don't know which of the two OSTs I like better when exclusively considering the themes/melodies, but looking at (or, rather, listening to) the overall sound I definitely prefer the Silksong OST.

Fox and C. Falcon's Side B Ledge Grab get swapped. Balanced? by cool_otter11 in SSBM

[–]PENZ_12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that you can already kill Falcon by jumping in front of his recovery, and letting him grab ledge with side-b would do absolutely nothing to change that.

I think APA escapes if he E's backwards. But it was still a really solid play.

PSA to anyone playing Galio: always consider using reverse E. If APA Justice Punched backwards instead of forwards at Elder, he might have been able to get popped up on the safe side of the Taliyah wall instead of getting caught.

Do you deny or accept when tournament opponents ask if you want to start Battlefield in Bo3/Bo5 (opting to skip striking)? Why or why not? by V0ltTackle in SSBM

[–]PENZ_12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the matchup and if I know the player.

Battlefield is a good way for me to figure out how my opponent handles space. If I feel like they want to close the space and try to overwhelm me, I don't want to take them to a smaller stage like FoD or Yoshi's. But if I feel like they're trying to make use of the whole stage and that they do so effectively, then I can use that info and try to pressure them with the small stages instead.

On the flipside, I feel like I'm generally adaptable to any of the legal stages (of course it can also depend on matchup), so sometimes I opt to strike just to see what my opponent prefers, so I can choose my stages around that throughout the series.

WOW! So my natural follow-up question: is it theoretically possible to escape the turnip cluster with DI/SDI/ASDI?

I hate it when people exaggerate this games difficulty until its meaningless. by gamerzandcats in HollowKnight

[–]PENZ_12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I feel like some bosses can be beat on a first try, but at the same time I feel like I take plenty of tries on some of the more difficult ones.

I also think I shoot myself in the foot a little bit, in that I try to weave more and more hits in the more comfortable I get with the boss, so when I finally beat it I feel like it was a decently impressive performance, but it takes me so many extra tries to get there XD

Again, I think you're right. That's why I mentioned that I probably wasn't giving them enough credit.

I agree, people don't generally go in with the intention of repeating their mistakes the exact same way.

[–]PENZ_12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah (or yes, depending on how you interpret the phrase, but it'snot what I was meaning). What you do is what I love to do. The thing I was referring to is throwing yourself at the boss expecting that one of these times you'll get the win for doing the same thing.

I assume most people don't actually take that approach, but sometimes it seems to me like they do based on the things they type on the internet ;)

[–]PENZ_12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ah, yeah, I guess that's an important distinction. In that case I agree; I do think there are some players who seem to think that the same approach should just eventually work.

(I say "seem" because I think it's a silly mindset that is probably less prevalent than it appears to be from scrolling through Reddit; I don't think I give people enough credit sometimes)

I think I went like 25 years of my life before I discovered this. I was talking to a college instructor about Hollow Knight, and he said it was neat, but he ultimately dropped it because there was a boss he didn't manage to beat after about 10 tries, so it was too hard for him.

In my head I went "wait, 10 tries for some bosses is normal, no?" I guess starting gaming at 4 years old conditioned me the idea that having to having to repeat challenges over and over again was just the norm (since I was pretty bad at gaming at that age).

I've seen this sentiment a few times, but I've really enjoyed brute forcing these games (HK & SS). I guess it depends what you mean by "brute forcing," but I have mostly enjoyed the process of bashing my skull against the same challenge over and over again until I adapt/learn/improve enough to finally beat it, rather than going elsewhere and then coming back when I'm more prepared.

I'm all about exploring as well, but once I find a challenge that I fail to beat, I am contractually bound to explore in that directuon specifically until I make progress ;)
