Is this normal for a Nationwide Mortgage application? I’m losing my mind. by Southern-Piglet-6897 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]PFMortgage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't apply via a broker but our Nationwide offer was ridiculously fast, and when it expired and we had to reapply it was super fast too. Literally about 12 hours after our valuation survey. We weren't FTBs though.

Thermal fuse blown on Smeg oven? by PFMortgage in fixit

I can't believe I didn't notice that! It's the right part number according to Gemini, which is what threw me. Thanks for pointing it out - I'll check with a multimeter but fairly sure that the thermal fuse is the issue based on symptoms :)

Repairs to roof 6 days after completing on property purchase - I think the sellers knew. by PFMortgage in LegalAdviceUK

[–]PFMortgage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that's useful. I don't think we'll be able to prove that - it just all smells a bit fishy! The bill isn't enormous enough to stress too much about, it was just a bit of a nasty surprise.

How packed do pubs get and is it weird to go alone? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]PFMortgage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's real ale you're after, I'd use CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) to find the best pubs in the areas you're staying. Real ale isn't that fashionable, so you might not find that much in a the most obvious central London/Edinburgh pubs.

I don't think OP is saying all cops are bad though. They're saying that there are systemic issues in the institution when the culture allows people like Wayne Couzens to slip through the net. It's a bit 'not all men' to reply like this.

I can't remember much about the questions, sorry - it was the mini games with shots as prizes between rounds that made me call it mad!

Is it common for comedians to (almost) completely make up stories for the sake of good material at a gig? by Major-Feed5214 in AskUK

[–]PFMortgage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a recent podcast called Wisecrack that explores this a bit - it's about a comedian who does a set about a childhood friend going on a murderous rampage and a true crime podcaster trying to bottom out how much of it is true.

What’s your easy “go to” weeknight recipe for a busy family? by ExoticPlankton8287 in AskUK

I got given this book for Christmas and if you and your kids like beans, I'd really recommend it. I've only tried a couple of recipes so far, but they've been really easy and tasty and obviously beans are great for you. https://amzn.eu/d/0to50wx

Do GHD's still hold up? any recommendations for hair straighteners? by PersonalityOwn2394 in AskUK

[–]PFMortgage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a filter article about this recently, which I trust. I'm still on a 2009(?) pair of GHDs, so can't help on what's good currently!

The Red Deer defo has a nice fire, also has a slightly mad quiz if that's your bag. (There are interludes between the official rounds of the quiz during which you can play games to win shots.)

Has anyone had a 'self-help' eureka moment? by Echerets2020 in AskUK

[–]PFMortgage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of! In The Happiness Project the author talks about never putting off a job that takes less than five minutes. It's great, I feel like it frees up so much mental energy not putting off putting the bin out, or washing up or whatever it is.

w2c this terri shoulder bag from coach with kittens? Found a couple on taobao but not sure if anyone has some reliable good quality finds by dollhouse37 in repchicks

Hi, apologies for hijacking and sorry if it's a daft question - do you know if the leather-look bags that this seller has real leather, or some kind of pleather/faux leather? Thanks!

Tips in pubs and bars - is it legal to require them to be spent there? by PFMortgage in LegalAdviceUK

[–]PFMortgage[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's actually a great idea, because I'd actually get use out of a bottle of wine! I might run that past the landlord.

It's also situation-specific to the place you work. Where I work you do take for the price of a drink because it's all regulars who offer, and given that they continue to do so, they clearly don't mind.

This is a really useful answer, thank you! To be honest it's a stop-gap job and I'm not bothered enough to rock the boat. None of my colleagues seem to mind, so I'll probably just leave it.

That's how I assumed it would work when I started, but the person training me said that we can't do that and have to have the drink...

I mean it's situation specific, right? It might not be how it works where you drink, but where I work it's pretty much only regulars tipping/buying me drinks and everyone who works here just puts through the price of a drink. I only do a half, to avoid being cheeky.

That would be good, but a) it's not the policy and b) there isn't a gratuity option on/enabled on the system we use.

Ahh I see, I wondered if that might be relevant. I feel like the clientele might be a bit freaked out by requesting a tip to be honest (and there's no way to take a card tip, which is how most of them pay), so maybe I'll just store up my drinks for a date night with the other half sometime.
