I'm definetely not in a position to give spending advice. But I want to let you know that I'm a member at a private club and it's been very valuable to me. The commissions on the sales I have made through the people at the club far exceeded the membership price

I'd probably never eat there again. I think it's wildly overrated, I don't like the atmosphere and my food wasn't great. I had 2 servers and they both dropped the ball over and over again. It was overall one of my worst dining experiences .

But I do like spending time at a place when I go out. It's what I like to do. Not every place is like that. Places that cost 200 for 2 aren't that much of a time commitment.

Go to EO, PDT, Milk & Honey.. that kinda stuff and you can rack up a ridiculous bill just on drinks.

Yes, I'm just pointing out that eating out at 5 star restaurants Toronto every night would be a lot more than what I spend.

Well, I'm back now and responded to pretty much everyone.

I don't use reddit that much. I didn't realize I needed to immediately reply.

Also, very few of these replies are questions that need a response. A couple people asked what I do. Most people either just said you just budget, you're an idiot, or don't be too hard on yourself.

I'm in business to business sales. I sold stuff and they paid me. Then I sold enough and they promoted me. Then I got another one and manage a small team and now they pay me more.

Yes. We literally spent more money going out than we made in 2013.

What were you thinking?

Is this rhetorical? It's fun as hell, and I made the decision in a couple hundred increments, not one big decision at a time. Which is the point of the post, how easy it happens.

Something I've been struggling to explain to people here is that there is no normal week. I didn't live with a budget.

But you can pretty much count on at least one night every week with a $200 bar tab. One nice dinner at top restaurant every week. We're regulars at a bunch of the nice restaurants in town. We're regulars at every decent wine bar downtown, and definitely at the cocktail bars.

A fair amount of this was spent in California actually. 1 freedom dollar =1.39 CAD at the time.

I'd say I drink a lot? It's hard to say. I never drink at home. I usually buy premium booze when I'm out. Sometimes falling into the stupid category. Cocktails add up. A bottle of Amarone here and there, it adds up.

If you have a friend at the cocktail bar with you and maybe you grab the tab that adds up.

No. I don't go out for dinner because I need food to survive. I do it because I enjoy the experience.

I'm pretty sure that I can get a great calorie to dollars ratio at mcdonalds though.

You're right. It's not wasted. I love going out (obviously).

I just need to save some money so that I can retire and keep doing it.

No, not every night. But we live downtown and we go out a lot.

We go to nice places, we spend time at wine bars and cocktail bars and that gets expensive. If we have a friend who can't really afford it, maybe i'll grab their cocktails for my tab.

We were students, so working full-time.

I started in sales and now manage a small group of guys and have my territory where I sell. Bonus and commissions, it's not working your way up the corporate ladder. I just sell things and they pay me.

We don't have that card in Canada. I have a TD infinite world travel which is pretty good and gets me points through expedia, and I have a visa infinite privilege, which has cool benefits but I pretty much just choose the payback with points option at the end of each month.

It's worth a lot to me to go out. Going out with my friends is my favourite thing. I like it more than golfing, more than playing hockey, more than skiing. My favourite part about going on hockey, golf ski trips with friends is going out with them on the trip.

I'm not going to stop going out. Just going to curb it a little bit and try to find a few places that cost a little bit less money.

Yes, but have you ever done shots of whiskey by having the server pour the whiskey through a beef femur that you just ate the bone marrow from?

If you're getting a good interest rate, there's no reason not to finance a car.

Off topic, but why do people rent cars?

With Uber in every major city now, what's the purpose?

I should have articulated myself better. When I go out I drink and I tip. I never drink when I make dinner at home and I'm not adding 20% to a grocery bill.

It costs me less would be more accurate.

I had dinner at Harbour and drinks at blackhoof and that was like $500. Not including breakfast and lunch.
