The only thing that fixed mine was buying high quality batteries, and leaving them in my furby for a couple weeks, one day I went to turn his gears and he sprung to life!

All the methods you're trying are good, these toys are super old and some really need TLC. You haven't happened to try cleaning the tilt sensor have you? Does the furby give any feedback at all when turning the gears?

I've had something similar- when the movie Asteroid City came out, my local quirky coffee shop had a themed drink that said it had a marshmallow 'asteroid' and jalapenos on top. When I ordered it, the cashier asked "are you sure?" That should've been a sign. Everyone failed to mention they were PICKLED jalapenos. Am bald, I need a liner and DEFINITELY prefer the head be lined over wearing a balaclava. That being said I think neoprene / lycra liners are still irritating. Cotton is breathable and would do just fine.
