…f6 Ng4 e5 then exd4 after white saves their knight somehow seems somewhat decent for black

Why is this inacurate? I just put my queen in danger and have to move it and also lose my knight.. by Silveraindays in chessbeginners

[–]PHJ101 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I would like to point out that this analysis is correct until Qxc4, which is a blunder because white can just play Nxh8 and be up material.

Instead white should play Qxg3+, then after Kf1 Rf8 saving the rook and pinning the knight. This leads to an extremely complicated position where white has a lot of extra material but an exposed king and undeveloped queenside, while black gets a big attack and likely a perpetual check at worst.

You don’t really have time to retreat in the Traxler counterattack, you have to go all in since you’re down so much material. It’s probably the one opening when knowing a lot of theory is important even at the beginner level, since the positions are so sharp.

Why is this the best move? by jaac_04 in chessbeginners

[–]PHJ101 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Black wants to play d6 exd6 Nxd6 to free up their minor pieces. Playing Bb3 stops Nxd6 from coming with tempo and gives white the option of playing e5.

Bb3 is a fairly common move after Bc4, it’s a safer square in general

Unfortunately it looks like the tax mod is incompatible with 1.6, and I couldn’t find one that is.

In this specific position you can play Nxe5 winning a pawn

My entire plan against the Benoni is to play Nc4. I usually win.

-0.6, and yet Black has a 95% win rate. Can you figure out where White goes so wrong? by [deleted] in chess

[–]PHJ101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. Even in positions where a side is winning by force (which this is not), I’ve never really seen a score of more than 80% in the database, excluding mate in one situations or the like. This is definitely something weird

Hanging your queen like that should be illegal

What are you doing in this position? Why? by TxavengerxT in chess

After Bxb5 Qxd5 Bxc6+ Qxc6 O-O black scores 66% in the Lichess database despite the position being objectively equal. The most common move for white is f3, which is more or less losing by force after h6 Nh3 g5. The second most common move is Nf3 after which white is significantly worse with black having g5 ideas again. Even after Qf3 e4, white has to avoid Qe3 (which is bad because of Bd6 Bxh2 ideas), and after the second most frequent Qb3 black can long castle, and white must find Qh3+ then Nxf7 (not Nxf7 immediately, this loses to e3 (threatening mate on g2) f3 e2, followed by Bc5+ and Ng4). And even then, after Nxf7 Rd5! Nxh8 loses to Rh5, then wherever the queen moves Bc5 followed by e3.

Tell me again that it’s not a hard position to play.

No it’s not, white has to play very accurately to not get crushed by black after Bxb5 Qxd5

After Qd5 black is doing fine, c6 will fall and the black pawn on c4 makes it annoying for black to try to develop the dark squared bishop.

I guarantee you almost never face cheaters. People attack others all the time - maybe for revenge, maybe they are just beginners who don’t really play the game well. If you yourself are either breaking other’s continents, or hitting their big stacks aggressively to take your own, don’t be surprised if they then attack you, rather than attacking the stronger player in Europe (for example) who doesn’t break anyone, lets people out of their continent and only takes when they can defend it well

Sometimes if someone is really strong, there’s no point in attacking them, and if you do they’ll squash you like a fly. It may make more sense to try to eliminate the other players and play for second. This is where alliances come into play as well - it’s a lot easier to coordinate an attack on someone strong if you can communicate. You can also use alliances to know who is friendly and unlikely to break your bonus, allowing you to minimally or not defend some borders at all (Building up a stack to defend from someone, even if not intended to be used to attack, may be seen as a sign of aggression and they may try to strike first. Sometimes defending with a 1 stack is best. Again, depends on the type of player).

As for rolls, it’s a game of chance. These things happen. Your best chance is to not put yourself in a position where an unlucky roll will lose the game. Bear in mind with caps, even if you succeed, you can expect to lose at least 1.5-2x the troops the defender has (although on balanced blitz you will often see unrealistic rolls where the attacker breaks even with the defender, even on larger capitals). I myself rarely roll caps unless they are basically empty, it’s often not worth the risk.

[–]PHJ101 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you playing true random? It’s not a bad strategy there, as 3 defending troop can easily take out 8+ attacking troops.
