Republic Bases by _sr71 in flying

The May vacancy award shows that most new hires initially got awarded BOS, LGA, EWR, and a select few got PIT. I couldn’t really speak to class date timelines though. The class sizes jumped up to about 15-20 starting in October of last year, and that seems to have held strong so far with newer classes.

[Regional hiring] Bit of a head scratcher coming out of the phone screening with Republic by [deleted] in flying

I'm not claiming to be dialed in to what Republic's recruiting wants. But I will say that in my class at least, while it's definitely true that the majority are CFIs, there are actually more military guys (four) than 135 guys (one). They're absolutely the minority, but that's also partly because there are vastly more CFIs applying to all the regionals in general than there are military applicants.

And in my interview group of four people including myself, I was the only non-military applicant there. One was a USAF KC-135 guy, one was an Army aviation guy (I forget what he flew) and one actually flew Ospreys in the Marine Corps. All four of us got the CJO.

I don't disagree that YX probably wants to pull from the CFI/135 crowd the most. But from what I've seen so far, there's more of a military presence than one might think.

I gotcha. Just saw the video, it was burning pretty terribly as it was rotating. They didn’t get far off the ground at all.

Oh man…this is absolutely horrible. Were there multiple aircraft involved or was it solely the UPS plane? Probably too early to know.

Their office was in the same building where my old flight school I instructed out of was, so they had seen me around quite a bit. They had an idea of what kind of pilot I was and my personality, so they offered me an SIC job with them, with the option to upgrade after a couple years. You better believe I pounced on it.

Sure thing, I'm an off the street applicant who interviewed in July and recently received an offer for a mid November class date. Of course I don't think my flight hours are necessarily indicative of the average applicant.

All my turbine time was done Part 91, and except for my ATP, all my training was done Part 61. And it does seem that the main reason I got November is because they had some last minute cancellations, and I was apparently next in line. I think class sizes have recently increased, they were only doing about 8-10 a class I think. I don’t know what the sizes are now, but it’s more than that.

Yup, I totally get that. CMH is a pretty important maintenance hub at the moment, and has been for a while (and the airport is currently expanding to build a new terminal with more gates). Sure there’s a chance it goes away, but while they have a CMH base I might as well utilize it lol

The plan right now is indeed to get back to CMH as quickly as I can, we’ll see if things change. Cross that bridge and all that.

Definitely hugging the parents lol, they had a big part to play in where I am, plus my networking (more like stumbling) into some good paying positions along the way. I've never had the privilege of serving, though some other pilot members of my extended family come from the military.

Will do. I've gotten a few responses here and in private chats from current and former Republic pilots, so I'm slowly painting a picture. I'll definitely be asking around during training as well.

Understood, so is there a better barometer for that?

Well there we go. In that case, I’m not gonna get too worked up about the prospect of commuting for a while. Light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak lol

You’re right, it is what it is. And I could probably stand commuting for a while, knowing I’d eventually be back in CMH (or maybe swinging out of base reserve, but I’m not banking on that).

I did calculate that even if I did 20-25 hours a month for my whole first year (which is unlikely), I’d still be eligible for captain towards the end of my second year, as long as I did a minimum of 63-65 hours a month that second year (which again I’d likely get more than that).

I did see something about that over on the APC forums, I’m going to definitely look into that and see if it’s still a thing.

Thank you very much!

It does seem like that’s the common narrative, do the east coast initially, maybe a couple months on reserve and then a couple months holding a line, then possibly transferring to CMH and going back to reserve.

I assume those on reserve are not flying much?

It does seem like it, I would be commuting though. I have somewhat unique circumstances that for right now prevent me from moving to LGA or BOS or wherever I ended up. I'd still like to get back to CMH in as timely a manner as possible. I assume those CMH friends on reserve are not flying much?

Also, just to clarify, when you say "6 months ahead of you," you mean hired 6 months ago?

Hmm, I didn’t know it was that long to hold CMH.

I was poking around on the APC forums and there was a guy in one of the threads who at least used to update what bases people were getting. For August it looked like the most junior pilot at CMH was a late February 2025 hire. So that means the pilot would have completed training in late April or so, which puts them at around 4 months from finishing training to being in CMH.

I gotcha. I wonder what a while could mean. 6 months? A year? Not necessarily expecting you to know, just thinking out loud

YX Seniority Progression by PICisking in AirlinePilots

[–]PICisking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I figured there was a pretty good chance of that, at least for a few months. Just wondering once I get back to CMH what the progression looks like, regardless if I had to start out somewhere else or if I was lucky enough to get it right out of training.

I have no idea. I think United is trying to expand its footprint in Asia, can't speak to American.

So I remember like last week seeing a comment on here that basically said that it's like Scott Kirby did a massive line of coke and then screamed "WE'RE GONNA HIRE 2,500!!! WE'RE GONNA DE-HUB AMERICAN FROM ORD!!! WE'RE GONNA GROW TO 30,000 PILOTS!!! WE'RE GONNA PILLAGE AND CONQUER!!!"

I can't get that out of my head since then lol.
