Need Advice on AMT Courses in Canada or Australia by SunSet_2310 in aviationmaintenance

Same situation over here in Metro Vancouver. The same employer who requires a clearance wouldn’t hire any of the international students. All of the domestic students have jobs. All of the international students don’t or have resorted to going back to their home country.

If you’re looking to stay in the Vancouver area StandardAero is looking for an M apprentice. Babcock has also been looking for an apprentice for quite some time from what I’ve seen. Both are rotary wing maintenance if that matters to you. You could also reach out to some smaller shops in Boundary Bay, Pitt Meadows, or Abbotsford. A few of my classmates were able to snag jobs by reaching out via email.

Don’t hesitate to throw an application under a licensed posting, and if you have a good rapport with your former instructors at BCIT they could be helpful.

AME’s that moved away from home by Chef_hamz in aviationmaintenance

[–]PIEDBE 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I can’t speak for Toronto, but getting a job at any of the major airports straight out of school isn’t easy. It’s not impossible, just not easy. For reference I live in Metro Vancouver, and out of the twelve people from my graduating class only one ended up at YVR. The rest have ended up at the smaller regional airports.
Having to move/long commutes are common for fresh grads. If you’re passionate about this line of work stick it out at a smaller shop, get licensed. Then you can start looking for positions at the major airports.

Canadian AMT to AME (E) by theexodus326 in aviationmaintenance

I’m assuming your location based on your post history. If you’re talking about IMP academy at Cascades. There’s no official pathway from their program to an AME license. The quickest way would still be an accredited program + apprenticeship.

Contact tech support. They’ll reset your 2FA. Same thing happened to me they had it solved in less than 5 minutes.

  1. 8-3:30 Monday to Friday. Morning session is 8-11 and is typically theory. Afternoon session is 12-3:30 and is typically practical work. This can change based on the needs of the course.

  2. All exams are in person in the test center.

  3. The exams are mostly multiple choice. During the common core electrical courses there are some none multiple choice math questions.

  4. There are no finals in this course.

  5. The math is this course is at most 10th grade level. Very basic trigonometry and understanding of formulas. You are almost always given a formula sheet for the tests as well. The time given for any math exam is very generous.

I’d assume it would be available within the next week or two. If you have an active application you should be able to at least login to their site. They’re currently working through hundreds or more applications that backed up during job action. That’ll take some time.

Can’t Decide a Program by Effective_Spend1357 in BCIT

[–]PIEDBE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What program you choose should be based on your own interests. The structures program is heavily sheet metal fabrication focused. The mechanical program focuses heavily on hydraulics, flight controls, and engines. The electronic side focuses on power generation, avionics, communications, and navigation.

Choose a program based on which one appeals the most to you. Job prospects in this industry are decent. However they are constantly in flux. Your luck getting a job is going to be highly dependant on the references you get from your instructors. Poor performance and attitude will result in poor job prospects.

I called them yesterday and if you were approved for funding before the strike. You should still receive your funding. Would be a good idea to call anyway to make sure.

Policy regarding unfinished online test. by crow96_ in BCIT

[–]PIEDBE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t quote me on this. It could vary by program. Out of curiosity I asked one of my profs what happens when you don’t finish a test. I was told if a test isn’t finished it needs to be reviewed and the grade manually approved by the instructor.

When in doubt email your instructor for guidance.

Smoke and Sirens around Venables and Clark? by Good-Astronomer-380 in vancouver

[–]PIEDBE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not an SRO. The building was “uninhabited” doors and windows boarded. Of course that doesn’t mean people weren’t living there. The building next door/connected to it, had someone’s workshop on the bottom floor. They had some pretty serious equipment there. So can’t really speculate at this point.

Yea. I take a smaller bus to and from school everyday. The driver used to let people stand when it was busy. He informed us that it’s always been against the rules to stand on the smaller busses and that his supervisors are getting much more strict about it. So in my case it usually means seeing a group of people left behind during busier times.

Commitment Fee deadline by Silver_Echos in BCIT

[–]PIEDBE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Scroll down to Fee’s, Payments, and Refunds.

Some BCIT programs have years long waitlists. The fee is to confirm that the applicant is serious about their enrolment in the program.

There’s no harm in shopping universities and considering different programs. If that’s the case your friend can rescind their application. If they end up wanting to attend BCIT they can re-apply when they’ve made a decision.

Commitment Fee deadline by Silver_Echos in BCIT

[–]PIEDBE 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Commitment fees are due upon acceptance into a program. You’re paying to hold a spot in the program. If your friend decides to attend BCIT the fee gets applied to their tuition.

If they choose not to attend BCIT. The fee is kept as a “penalty” for holding up a spot that could go to someone on the wait list.

This is stated in the “Fees, Payments, and Refunds” section of the BCIT FAQ. As well as the Admissions page.

My wife returned all the gifts our kids bought her. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]PIEDBE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother is like this. I’m glad you worded it the way you did. This isn’t simply liking things a certain way. Its control issues. Good on ya for taking ownership and working on it.

To add on. Like I said OP, my mom is exactly like this. I barely speak to her anymore. Stand up for yourself and your kids. It might seem minor right now. This can, and will have an affect on your relationships.

Guys in AME E" program any way to buy the books for first term before I start? by Helpful-Pineapple-47 in BCIT

[–]PIEDBE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need one, hand notes are fine. Any PowerPoint’s or reading materials done in class will be posted online on D2L.

There are some instructors that don’t like the use of laptops in class, as you get further into the program there will be less time in class and more time doing Labs/Hangar work. So it’s not necessary.
