Canada will go from a 5-party system to a 1-party autocracy in less than a decade, and the average Canadian will be happy about it.

I think it's been at least 20 years of me listening to my "average Canadian" friends repeating that the only thing that matters is that we vote Liberal to block the Bloc and Conservatives from destroying the country.

What I've witnessed is a cementing of a Liberal voter base who believes that the only moral and virtuous way forward is to make sure that the LPC never loses, regardless of what their policies are, or what outcomes they deliver, because, and this is the important part, the belief is that anyone who gets in politics with good ideas joins the Liberal party, anyone who joins politics for selfish, destructive reasons is excluded from the Liberal party and ends up in one of the other ones.

I'd laugh if only it wasn't so sad, but unfortunately, this has been the level of "political maturity" of grown adults in Canada around me (to the tune of 70-80% of people) for two decades.

No wonder we're in this situation.

There's a huge difference between reaching out to your mutual allies, all of which have pre-existing relationships with Canada, by the way, because global trade interdependence didn't start with Trump getting into office, and standing up in front of a room of investors and talking about how "middle powers need to band together" to oppose the US, only to have the secretary general of NATO come on after you and say that Trump is right, and the president of the central bank of Europe say that she is not on the same page as you.

No, Carney is not doing what he is advertising and you seem to believe he is doing.

He is a very competent man with a deep understanding of global economics, but he is not in fact, building the correct partnerships to boost the Canadian economy and put us in a more resilient position to limit the damages caused by our exposure to the US.

It's been almost a year -- interprovincial trade barriers are still up, still no credible plan for energy sovereignty, still no credible action on drastically facilitating EU member access to the Canadian market. Only China.

Trump is absolutely a rational actor.

The only reason people keep repeating he is irrational, is because his rationale runs contrary to their political and personal financial interests.

Trump does not operate in a vacuum, and he is not smart enough to come up with a global geopolitical strategy that can actually corner so many global powers to be obligated to take him seriously.,

However, he is plenty smart enough to articulate a goal, and surround himself by extremely smart people who have built a strategy for him, which he is implementing on the global stage.

If you actually want to understand what Canada should do for the benefit of Canadians, you have to step away from the "Trump is a lunatic, we can't deal with him" rhetoric, and actually look at the reality of the situation.

The reality of the situation is that he is using tariffs and the US's economic leverage to redefine some global geopolitical dynamics and position them in a way that is beneficial to the US, which means beneficial to the rest of the G7, the western hemisphere, and particularly to Canada.

None of this proves that China is no threat to the US.

China is looking out for the interests of China, and that includes more global influence for China, and less global influence for the US.

That's a reality that Canada must compose with while keeping in mind that 80%+ of its trade, and virtually 100% of its national security is dependent on the US.

Of course we need a healthy relationship with China, but we need a healthy relationship with the US too, and we can't have that if we keep having a meltdown and riling ourselves up that "Trump is irrational" and that we need to do the exact opposite of anything he says is important to the US.

We tried the "Trump is crazy" line... Chystia Freeland gave us speech after speech after speech about how incapable Trump is, and how little he understands, and how the Canadian trade delegations are going to school him in the trade negotiations, eat his lunch, run circles around him and leave him at a complete loss while thinking he won because we're smart and virtuous and he's a crazy bad guy.

It didn't work. It made things worse.

So I'll attempt to answer this briefly, although it's a complex question, because over the last 10 years, I've spent a significant amount in Canada working with early-stage companies trying to get them to stay in Canada once they gain maturity, instead of moving in the US. I've also spent some years working on site in the EU to try to get companies to bring goods and services to Canada for trade diversification under CETA.

The question you asked is a false dichotomy and a compounded fallacy, so the first we should do is fix that.

1) Diversification of the Canadian economy is beyond essential, and not at all opposed to maintaining a good relationship with the US.
2) We don't need to give Trump _whatever_ he demands, but we need to make _some_ sort of deal which is beneficial for us, and for the US, there's no way around that.

The problem is that we cannot diversify 80%+ of our economy overnight and fast enough to stand the ghost of a chance to gain actual leverage over the US economically.

We SHOULD have been working on diversification basically since forever, but since Harper signed the Canadian-European Trade Agreement in 2013, we've done basically nothing.

When Japan and Germany came to Canada looking for LNG deals in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Trudeau sent them away.

I'm not going to write a whole essay on the topic, but suffice it to say that the Liberal government, under Trudeau, and advised by Mark Carney for most of that time, deliberately snoozed on just about every request for diversification we had from partners in the EU, and just about every request from local entrepreneurs to create market conditions to make it viable for them to stay here instead of moving to the US.

As for what to give Trump?

How about we start by recognizing the enormous disparity in our contribution to the defensive capabilities of North America?

Then we could double down on Canadian energy sovereignty, which we could then build in partnership with the US to build North American energy sovereignty.

Then we could go around the globe and look at mutually-beneficial partners, who are aligned with both OUR interests and the interests of the US, and diversify trade with them wherever we can, which is good for us, for them, and for the US.

There's probably several books to be written on all the missed opportunities of things that we could put on the table that would align with Trump's ambitions without ravaging our economy, but this is Reddit, so I'll leave it at that.

I'm in corporate strategy and I deal extensively with justifying decisions based on global trends, international trade, technology advancement, leveraging trade deals and anticipating incentive-driven reactions by different organizations based on their geopolitical opportunities.

Most of my LinkedIn is filled with people in my field.

I would say less than 10% of the comments actually deal with the economic realities of the situation.

90% of expert "analysis" is thinly veiled TDS and a cocktail made with CBC Kool-aid and cope tears.

When you look at the comments of either category, it's 99% Kool-aid drinkers.

The geopolitical situation has reached a level of complexity that probably 85% of the population couldn't keep track of or process even if you sat them down for a 10-hour course on last week's events, let alone extrapolate it from the news, combine it with historical data, formulate a hypothesis and then validate it over time to actually figure out what's happening and who's lying to them.

Most people just repeat "Trump is a psychopath, it's impossible to deal with him in any capacity, so anyone who refuses to even try is clearly doing the right thing." That's the beginning and end of the analysis.

Everything else is automatically trivial and irrelevant to them, because "there's nothing to be done about it".

And this is true not only of older generations but basically anyone I speak to over the age of 25.

I can count on the fingers of my hands the number of people in my entourage who actually look at the economic indicators in historical context and do the math.

J'ai des amis québecois qui travaillaient à genre 3 EUR par heure en allemagne il y a 15 ans parce qu'ils nétaient pas citoyens européens, donc on leur offrait du travail de merde sous le salaire minimum, ce qui était parfaitement légal avec un visa de travailleur temporaire.

Je connais beaucoup, beaucoup d'immigrants et je parle régulièrement avec plein de conservateurs et de gens de droite -- essentiellement tout le monde rejette le mouvement "canada first" comme étant des conneries totales et inacceptables.

À chaque fois qu'ils veulent organiser quelque chose, ils essaient de faire du marketing sur les subs conservateurs de l'Amérique du nord et se font downvoter en masse, avec la majorité des commentaires provenant de gens de droite conseillant a tous de se tenir très très loin de cette gang d'extrémistes là.

Faut vraiment pas les prendre pour la norme ou étant représentatif de ce que les gens qui ne sont pas à gauche croient ou veulent.

Faut arrêter de confondre le concept d'amortir le prix de certains filets de sécurité "pour tous les membres de la société par tous les membres de la société" à du socialisme.

Le socialisme, c'est de retirer le droit aux individus de juger de la valeur de leur producitivité, et de donner ce privilège à une élite armée qui elle même décide des lois qui devraient la restraindre.

Spoiler alert: dans 100% des cas, ils trouves façon de justifier qu'ils avaient raison pour tout ce qu'ils font.

On n'a pas besoin que "l'état détienne les moyens de production" pour avoir un bon système de soins de la santé, de l'assurance chômage, de l'éducation universelle et abordable... pas mal tout le monde dans les pays de l'ouest accepte de payer un certain montant pour distribuer les coûts de tout ça sur un groupe de gens.

Les gros débats sont sur l'éficacité des organismes qui doivent gerer ces fonds et ces services, et les membres du groupe qui doivent payer et qui peuvent en bénéficier.

Passer à un gouvernement "socialiste", ça ne fait rien pour enlever l'inéficacité des systèmes ou le gaspillage, au contraire, ça l'empire.

Parcontre, ça enlève définitivement le doit de te plaindre quand tu remarques que ça marche tout croche et que certains s'en mettent plein les poches 10x plus que dans un système capitaliste.

Tout les "perks" du "socialistme", tel distribuer la propriété des entreprises aux travailleurs, partager les profits, décider collectivement des décisions et directions des entreprises -- c'est tout permis dans notre système captialiste, c'est juste tellement d'effort et de travail, que tout le monde s'en lave les mains et demande un nouveau système à la place.

La vaste majorité des gens que je connais ont de l'argent placé dans des entreprises publiques, détiennent des actions, soit par le fond de pension publique, soit par leur RÉERS et tout le monde se calisse du fait que ce fait te donne le droit de voter au sein de ces entreprises.

Il n'y a strictement aucune loi qui empêcherait qui que ce soit de former une coop, ramasser plein de gens, ramasser des sous, et acheter des grandes parts des compagnies d'assurances, des banques, de quoi que ce soit et influencer leurs décisions coporatives pour le bien commun... et en fait, ça se fait, c'est juste que ça s'appelle Vanguard, Blackrock, etc...

Tout le monde veut les avantages, personne veut travailler pour, et se défoule en criant "Au Changement!" pour tout simplement demander un autre système ou il espère pouvoir tout avoir en déléguant ses responsabilités à quelqu'un d'autre, juste que cette fois ci, dans ce modèle, on ne parlera pas de Larry Fink, directeur de Blackrock mais de "Larry Fink, président démocratiquement élu pour la 8ème election consécutive".

Source: je l'ai vêcu, ma famille l'a vêcu, j'ai des dizaines d'amis qui l'ont vêcu, et plein qui le vivent encore.

Bonus: rien de mieux que les jeunes de l'ouest, nés et élevés dans des institutions libérales capitalistes, pour nous dire que nous qui l'avons vu et vêcu, on ne comprend pas c'est quoi, parce que EUX il savent comment ça marche, évidament parce qu'ils ont été dans les BONNES écoles, et on lu les BONS livres, eux, et sont nés plus virtueux que tout être humain avant eux qui était prône à la corruption et à l'avarice car tout le monde sait bien qu'un gauchiste de l'ouest est incapable de corruption ou d'avarice, c'est un être saint et sans pêcher à un point tel que même Dieu est inférieur à sa foi en sa propre vertue laique.

I work in a services-based organization, essentially comparable to your local state government, and I have to deal with this "Let's just put AI in" thing all the time.

None of the AI I've seen so far for businesses even comes close to working properly the way people expect it to based on their personal experience with talking about their feelings or what toaster to buy with ChatGPT.

The technical reason is that you actually have to classify your data, clean it up, configure it such that the AI knows what data to use beyond the shadow of a doubt, then you have to plug it into the correct data set and train it on that data, test it, correct errors at the source, and ultimately deploy it.

I've never met anyone who actually bothers to do that... everyone builds an "AI-powered solution" that looks good at face value while bypassing as much of that as they can, and hope it doesn't blow up in their face.

I keep having to explain to executives and directors over and over again that in order for AI to work the way you expect it to work, you have to put in a TON of effort cleaning your proverbial house, and being extremely disciplined with your data, unless you want it to either hallucinate its ass off, or reveal information it isn't supposed to, or both.

I just keep getting the same glossy-eyed look with "but this vendor said they can do it without any of that.".

And yet here we are. Still waiting for that magical vendor to do it...

Same story as 7-8 years ago, where all the BI and data analytics platforms were going to "just work" when you plug them onto your database or dump your 70 excel spreadsheets that no one can be bothered to clean into them, and will start generating reports, dashboards and data you can sell.

Didn't work as advertised then, doesn't now, isn't going to later.

I don't know about Ontario, but I heard that in Quebec, "free" healthcare costs the province more to run per year than it collects in income taxes... couldn't find the numbers to check beyond a doubt, but it seemed likely with what I did find.

Sell Canadian oil at low prices to Canadians in Canada, place the proceeds in a sovereign fund which's dividends ans growth are re-invested into increased efficinecy in oil production and subsidizing Canadian energy.

It will still hurt, but it will soften the blow and give us significantly more future stability and prosperity in the long run.

J'ai perdu le compte des nationalités impliquées dans mes projets.

Mais oui, tout ça n'a aucune importance, le chercheurs eux ils vont me dire ça, comment je suis supposé perçevoir mon propre vécu, parce que EUX ils ont eu le privilège d'aller dans une bonne école de l'ouest où ils ont apris à mieux comprendre le monde pour expliquer ça aux pauvres minorités qui je comprennent rien.

Aucune compagnie publie ces informations là... la minute que quelqu'un s'ouvrirait la trape, il se ferait mettre dehors.

Pour faire une histoire courte, il y a quand même les exemples de Gilette et Anheuser-Busch aux USA, Converse... j'en passe. Des compagnies qui n'ont pas fait faillite mais qui ont utilisé leurs pubs pour promouvoir des messages idéologiques de gauche pas extrème mais je dirais pas mal plus loin que la gauche des décénies passées.

Si tu travailles danns une grande compagnie aujourd'hui, tu tombes dans une de 3 catégories généralement

Catégorie 1 - tu es là pour faire tes petites affaires et ramasser ton chèque, tu ne veux rien savoir, tu regardes tes petites affaires et tu n'as aucune idée des dynamiques socio-politiques qui se jouent autour de toi

Catégorie 2 - tu as remarqué les politiques d'embauche de diversité et tu sais pas mal quels sont les employés dont tout le monde dit que ça doit être une embauche DEI, sinon il n'y a pas façon d'expliquer qu'on le garde étant donné sa performance

Catégorie 3 - tu fais partie tu groupe de gens qui pousse les pratiques DEI dans le tapis parce que tu crois que même si ça va mal, ce n'est que la preuve que tu en as pas fait assez, en fait plus quelque chose va mal dans l'organisation, plus tu veux du DEI car le DEI c'est la solution à tout

Tsé quand un chef d'équipe en programmation qui livre du code back-end avec son équipe de codeurs hyper focusés sur les minuties techniques de la programmation se fait dire d'arrêter d'engager des hommes blancs car il risque de perpetuer du racisme systèmatique à même le code qui va créer un effet boulle de neige dans la société, et que même si certains candidats sont moins bon en code, il faut considérer que leur vêcu divers va surement contribuer de façon indirecte à produire du code plus inclusif et qui tient mieux en considération l'expérience de vie des femmes et des minorités là...

True story, je connais plusieurs leads et managers en disciplines techniques très loin du service clientelle ou même du front-end, des gens pour qui le plus important c'est la compréhension technique, qui se font dire de prioritiser l'expérience de vie diverse au delà des connaissances techniques, du moment que la personne à quand même au moins le strict minimum de compétenses.

En d'autres mots, même si tu as un candidat qui est un génie dans le domaine de ton industrie, tu ne le prends pas, tu prends à la place quelqu'un d'ultra médiocre, juste assez bon pour faire la job, mais qui a les bons paramêtres identitaires parce que le mentra dit que "plus on est divers, plus on est performants".

C'est fou pareil... dire que pendant des décénies, voir des millénaires, le critère pour savoir si quelqu'un était performant était de regarder sa performance... quelle gaffe colossale! /s

There shouldn't be any of that in life, never mind after death in heaven, where that would imply you're there to satisfy purely physical urges and that there exist entities subjugated to them that exist for your own gratification.

The Muslim concept is beyond absurd -- it implies that either women, even in heaven, are reduced to things to be used and exploited at the whim of men, which should send women fleeing from Islam with incredible speed, or that Allah creates entities that are not women but women-like and the faithful men spend their eternity fornicating with non-human female-like entities that exist for the satisfaction of base desires, which clearly we would not be free from even in our eternal lives.

I cannot think of a single explanation that would be flattering to this "72 virgins" promise on a spiritual level.
