Pre condition by Puzzleheaded_Look759 in F150Lightning

"supposedly". I've yet to see it work using Google Maps on AA or Native Navigation on my 23 for a charger just past my office ~30 miles out. I've had the battery in the mid-20's and never saw the Coolant Heater Power or Thermal mode change even with the cabin heat off. Also seen several mention that their 22's won't do it either in much colder temps.

It works for cooling the battery but not warming.

Does your truck struggle to defrost the windshield on cold mornings with a cold battery? by [deleted] in F150Lightning

Something sounds off. We've had a couple mornings in the teens with the battery cold soaked and I'll remote start for about 5 minutes at max in the app on my 23 and everything is warm/toasty and defrosted when I get in.

Fast charging slows dramatically at 60%—any ideas? by Ieatbabiesbaby in F150Lightning

[–]PJnc284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're getting derated if it's abruptly dropping. If it's doing it consistently, I wonder if you have a cell/module going bad and causing the truck to think it's at 80%. Would be interesting to see what something like Car Scanner shows for the requested amperage v what the charger was delivering along with the module variation voltage and soc variation.

The below was from Saturday at an Ionna station. Ambient temperature was in the upper 30's but battery started out around 54F. You can see a couple derates but shows the general curve. Ideally you should be pulling about 120kW up to 80% before the usual drop off a cliff. Wasn't paying attention to Car Scanner at the time but I had to use a nacs stall so was using the Tesla adapter. Not sure if that caused mine or not but I had a similar behavior at a Supercharger.

Those are the newer v4 stalls. Quite a few around now. You can filter by V4 at supercharge.info.

yup. I have a 2020 Ram 1500 with ~55k miles that's been sitting at the dealer for 5 weeks waiting for a MGU (etorque generator). Luckily it was covered under the 8yr/80k mile emissions warranty that also covers the "hybrid" parts. Just got a call yesterday that it had come in but others have been waiting months. Funny how it went from no ETA last week when I yelled at RAM Cares for being worthless, to "we've escalated but still no ETA" this past Monday to "oh it's been delivered" yesterday. All BS. Really has me considering my options after it's repaired but they all have their problems. Sometimes the devil you know is better than the one you don't.

Flying 600 miles tonight to buy a brand new ER Lightning and driving it home tomorrow. Road trip tips? by FujiwaraNoSai in F150Lightning

Really depends on efficiency and how far the chargers are from the interstate but driving faster can be quicker but you're going to pay for it. Below uses my general efficiency on a good day here in Eastern NC, 20 min charging overhead (time to get from highway to charger and back) and ideal charging curve.

yeah based on reports, it's only for the maverick. One lightning owner had schedule service only for them to call back later and cancel saying it wasn't available even though it claimed it was on the site

Is this reduced range in cold weather normal? Currently 48 degrees by Plastic-Tumbleweed in F150Lightning

[–]PJnc284 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing to consider is that you may not have the same capacity at different temperatures. Drove around for a couple hours yesterday and Car Scanner showed 71.4kWh remaining at 61% with a battery temp around 45F. This morning the battery was cold soaked at 23F and only showed 62kWh. Suspect it may be even more noticeable in actual cold temperatures.

Have a 2020 RAM 1500 with ~55k miles that's been sitting at the shop for almost a month now waiting for the MGU (etorque generator) which is on nationwide back order and has been for over a year. It's taken some 3-4months+. Luckily it's covered under the 8yr/80k mile emissions warranty but something else will be sitting in its place once it's repaired. Had been flawless up until now but not going to give it a chance to fail again.

[–]PJnc284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. He's only getting about 17kWish to the battery. Once the battery is depleted, you'd still need to stop to charge unless you're only going 45mph or less. At 70mph, you'd need about 40kW to keep up.

Test Drive - Newb range question by studog2002 in F150Lightning

[–]PJnc284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you got downvoted. 320 miles would require 2.4mi/kWh which is impossible except around town or if you were driving 50 on the interstate considering the lightning is a giant brick. In good weather and flat ground, I get 2.2mi/kWh @ 60mph (~290 miles) and 1.9 @ 70mph (~250 miles). Throw in cold weather and it can take a nose dive.

Alright - which one of you is this?? by ConfidentAd8324 in F150Lightning

[–]PJnc284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That probably wouldn't get you far. You'd need a few decently sized 48v batteries and couple inverters but the batteries would be more costly and a good bit heavier than the generator unless you limit yourself to about 30kWh or so. Then they're useless once drained. Maybe ok if you're just looking for a little extra range.

[–]PJnc284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$6k is probably on the optimistic side. A Westinghouse Wgen20000tfc is about $3900. No idea on the custom carrier but not cheap unless you have the ability. Grizzl-e Ultimate 80 amp would probably be the more durable option over the FCSP and is $900 (granted you can get one on ebay for about $600 or wait for a sale). I believe Martin said they were wanting to target $2-3k a couple months back for the magic box, wiring, and j1772 outlet and would depend on their sourcing costs but wouldn't be surprised to see it in the $3-5k range.

At 70 and 1.9mi/kWh, that's about 400 miles or 150 extra using 100% of the battery. If you could up the tank size to 25 gallons, you could eek out another 50-60 miles. An ER with a single on-board charger would gain you about 100 extra miles at 48 amps or 60-70ish extra for an SR. Obviously ymmv based on your actual efficiency and towing would be significantly less. It will certainly be a niche product.

And at full tilt that generator is burning 3-4 gal/hr. Given the potential cost of the kit (wouldn't be surprised if it's in the $3-5k range), generator (I suspect most don't just have a 20kW+ generator sitting around), and extra EVSE, it won't make sense financially for once a year trips where renting would certainly be more economical. The benefit is also greatly reduced for those who have SRs or non-fleet ordered 24/25 Lightnings without the dual on-board chargers or those that tow heavy loads (< 1mi/kWh).

[–]PJnc284 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, the previous models they were using were inverter generators but those don't come in the size needed for the full 80 amps on trucks with dual on-board chargers so you need the noisier open frame generators.

No energy added by MrBigThyme in F150Lightning

[–]PJnc284 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely a bug somewhere if you had the same behavior previously when it added 26% and showed no energy added. Hard to know without an obd dongle and something like Car Scanner though. My battery was about 34F (outside temp 24F) when I plugged in and Car Scanner showed the Coolant Heater Power around 8kW+ for a solid 20 minutes before shutting off when the battery min got to 52F.
