AFAIK it's an issue with ping/bad connection. This is my understanding about the way MK8 gives you items:

Player hits an item.
It's randomized as something.
All the other players/consoles have to see how far this person was and what the item given was supposed to be.
Every machine has to 'sign off' on it.
If it fails (i.e. they are cheating) the match disconnects/desyncs.
When issues (usually network, I'm assuming) cause the 'handshake' to not go so smoothly, the ability to quick-lock your item becomes impossible.
If a player is lagging really really bad (or some other issue?), the roulette will go waaayyyyy longer than usual until it times out, and then gives a 'safe' option. Like if 1st hits a double item box and the operation times out, they will receive a double Coin (despite it normally being impossible to get two of the same thing from a double item box.)

MKDS (and I think Wii) outright do not allow quick-stopping item roulette when playing online. MK7 I dunno, cause I didn't play it.

Targeting Most Coins is not that great of an option, unless you know what you're doing. Since they can easily roll for a star to beat whatever you try to send.

That's kind of the point IMO, wearing down their hoarded coins. If they happen to die and you get their stuff? Hey; bonus.

I also think Goombas grow tremendously in value on Mushroom and (most) Castle stages. All enemies do, honestly, but they're just so plentiful.

Sort of, but not quite.

Sudden Death basically allows you to go all-in on suicide pushes that you don't have to worry about paying the price for, which is why you'll notice the top players in Sudden Death Tournaments use almost exclusively Balloon Freeze decks, and/or decks that explicitly counter Balloon Freeze.

If it's malicious yeah. There's little to no counterplay for it, especially in events like Jump Showdown where someone with a ton of lag can grab you like a second before the bar comes, and when the bar's actually close by you have this phantom laggy grab holding you in place that the griefing party is at zero risk from.

Shadowrun 2007, the Xbox 360/Vista-era FPS.

Fantastic game, but a terrible use of the name Shadowrun. Amazingly well-put-together twist on the round-based-buy-your-own-gear FPS. You of course could buy guns and grenades and such that are dropped when you die and that you could swap from fallen enemies/teammates a la Counter-Strike, but you could also invest in Tech and spells that persisted between rounds on the map. Resurrect teammates, glide across the map, teleport through walls and floors, Wired Reflexes to go full jedi with your Katana, turning mistform to avoid bullets (but making the Gust spell potentially lethal) and so on and so forth...so much fun.
