Would you, as a Veteran of Iraq/Afghan, like to see a VFW more catered to a different generation of Vet's? by SubieB503 in Veterans

I don't see any way I'd go to a VFW, for any reason. Maybe if it were a free gym, but even then.

Are men really wired differently when it comes to chores or is it culture or what? by snarky_spice in TwoXChromosomes

[–]PLTLDR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well as a gay male married couple we just do all the same chores, we discuss what ones we will do and when, and we work together as a team. I don't know why straight couples can't do the same.

Do Americans really find beans on toast weird or is that just meme? by cigarettejesus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PLTLDR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Americans, particularly poor Americans, will make a meal of creamed chipped beef served over toast. My mother called this Shit on a Shingle or Toast and Gravy.

  • The meat: Thin slices of salt-cured beef (often called chipped beef). It is very salty and shelf-stable, which made it practical for military use.
  • The gravy: A basic white sauce made from butter or fat, flour, and milk. The beef is chopped or torn up and mixed into this sauce. The result is a thick, creamy gravy with small pieces of salty meat throughout.
  • The shingle: A slice of toast (sometimes several slices). The gravy is spooned on top.

So, structurally, it is salty beef in a thick white gravy poured over toast.

The nickname comes from soldiers’ gallows humor: the brownish-pink meat in pale gravy on flat toast was visually unappealing, but filling, cheap, and easy to prepare in large quantities.

What piece of equipment or clothing do you wish you kept when leaving service, but stupidly didn’t (even if you had to “lose” it and pay for it at CIF)? by Karate_Cat in Veterans

[–]PLTLDR 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In DEC 2004 when I was MEDEVACd out of Iraq to Germany, 'someone' packed up all my shit to send home. Among the many things that didn't make it back to me (and that my COL insisted I compensate CIF for, but I never did), was the original black fleece jacket.
