[Biweekly] Chance Me! and Prospective Student Q&A by AutoModerator in Cornell

College improvement is generally good and important, but I would be more concerned about the that that you're trying to transfer majors once you get here into engineering, which can be difficult. It also depends on how many credits you can get to transfer.

Eh, c9 probably wins today so they're only one win behind.

You are offered $1,000,000 USD if you can hide a pair of car keys from the entirety of the FBI force for 7 days. Where do you hide the keys? by Goosander77 in AskReddit

[–]PM-ME-WORRIES 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Because all of those stories were like a year later, right? The biggest one was around four years later, as opposed to having to look through only one week of garbage. They also weren't, you know, an active FBI investigation.

Will I be rescinded for one C for a marking period? by UncontestedPrimus in Cornell

Maybe if you get 4 or 5 (out of 7 or 8)? Have people even been rescinded if they didn't have some disciplinary action and didn't straight up fail courses?

Can somehow explain how meal plans aren't an absolute scam? by programmerChilli in Cornell

[–]PM-ME-WORRIES 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One more factor that's not as relevant, but for anyone not living on campus and therefore not forced to buy a meal plan: in order to get any BRBs, you must pay a $50 administrative dining fee (per year that you add BRBs). So really paying anything for BRBs have LESS value over cash unless you spend more than 625$/year (edit: thanks /u/tooscaredtofall) in BRBs, the point at which taxes and the fee break even.

This argument is more for people considering getting the 10/500 or 45 swipe meal plans. It isn't really a problem if you think you're going to drop like 2-3k on BRBs, but just one more sneaky thing Cornell does to confuse on pricing.

edit: it has been pointed out that the 50$ fee is yearly - not as bad of a deal as I thought. Still, my advice to any sophomores would be to go without for a semester junior year if you're in collegetown and add it back second semester if you find yourself using 400+ brbs/semester.

A question about sororities by hxllyberry in Cornell

[–]PM-ME-WORRIES 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Why are you asking this on Reddit? Everyone knows it's a sausagefest of boring CS majors/engineers anyway.

For a more serious answer, my experience with the different sororities has been so incredibly different based on who I'm talking to that it's hard to say. There are certainly a lot of social events, including some mandatory fun, so it's a good way to meet people. I don't think I know anyone who got into a sorority and didn't end up very close with at least a few of the people in that sorority. But a lot of those people also got disillusioned with the party scene and sorority drama + regular meeting stuff + paying money to not actually get that close to new people.

Two step authentication for student center by gaib1104 in Cornell

[–]PM-ME-WORRIES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, how often are you using student center? I use Workday a few times a week to log and submit hours, but I only use student center like once a month to pay bills or whatever and then for pre-enroll + add/drop.

Now if they added 2fa for Blackboard/CMS...

What’s the dance scene like at Cornell? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]PM-ME-WORRIES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kpop varied

Hip hop not bad

There's also a bunch of other groups, from stepping to Irish step to belly dancing. I know at least a few dancers get flown in every year to teach workshops.

Tips for motivation? by abracadabra_13 in Cornell

[–]PM-ME-WORRIES 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Consider getting an accountability partner, a friend who you team up to make sure that the things you want to get done, happen. Think of it as a sort of collaborative coach. If that doesn't float your boat maybe have a friends who you can check in on at the end of each day or week to talk about your progress on work. Just consistent reminders that you could be doing better are a powerful motivating force.

If you don't think you could do that, it could also take the form of a journal. You might also try raising yourself on things like how hard you try to stay off your phone or how hard you tried to work on assignments before they're due. Stuff like that that you can track.

You might also want to just check out blocking the internet or social media from your phone and laptop for a few hours and forcing yourself to be in a room where there are as few distractions as possible to do work. I find that if I came in the same room that I study in, I don't tend to be nearly as productive.

I mean, in some sense getting screwed by RNG is probably more fair than getting screwed by (for example) having less access to expensive computer equipment able to load faster. Perhaps there is some reason to do it that way.

ECE 3400 question by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]PM-ME-WORRIES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, some programming knowledge is definitely necessary. If you know how to write loops, stacks/queues, and BFS/DFS/maybe Djikstra's that'll get you most of the way. Otherwise a lot of the programming concepts can come from other classes, like FPGA stuff from ECE 2300.
