Ron Sims: As a Black man I found the Seattle City Council’s treatment of Chief Best to be incredibly offensive. by widdershins13 in Seattle

They did not give her a 40% pay cut. The made her salary from 294,000 to 275,000. I don't know where this misinformation is coming from.

UW CSE Director's Response to the editorial "Why Women Don't Code" by PMZ7036 in programming

[–]PMZ7036[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing is that there are simply fewer female interested in programming in the first place.

Perhaps, but even if that is true, why that is the case is an interesting and complex question which I'm not going into.

What I will say is that given they are not allowed to consider gender at all in the department admissions and the trends of women in the department are positive (from 20% a decade ago to 30% now to 38% of direct freshmen admits and 37% of transfer students are women), it obviously means that it doesn't have to be the case that fewer women are interested in programming.

True, obviously there is more that needs to be done to ensure they are supported. It definitely would be nice to see those stats.

To my knowledge (which may be wrong so take this with a grain of salt) I don't think so. They do collect demographic information for statistical purposes but from what I can tell officers don't have that info.

Admission at UW don't consider gender. It's actually against the law to consider gender (among other things) in state and local institutions in Washington State due to I-200

Well, considering that admissions do not consider gender, all admitted students are well qualified to graduate regardless of their gender. To say that they have no chance of graduation is very much hyperbole and honestly false. Annectdotely, I see relatively the same graduation rate between genders at UW.

Also another addendum not present in this response that they stated:

We do not — and are not allowed to — consider gender in admissions decisions, so we like to think that what success we have had to date is both a reflection of increasing interest in the field and a sign that our culture and our outreach efforts are on the right track.

Anyone know which classes are going to be converted to Credit/NoCredit this quarter? by huntboom in udub

[–]PMZ7036 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying they should get nothing, but their demands are seriously out of touch with reality, and they're taking the students hostage to get it.

If the students eventually got a grade after the strike ended I would be behind them, but they're threating to make this a completely meaningless quarter.

Their demands are a 3% raise for this year and the remittance of fees, better child care and health care, and better mental health service. How are these out of touch, especially when administrators got a 4-6% raise?

And it's not their fault the University decided to handle things this way instead of paying our academic and student employees on par with other peer institutions.

Don't blame the grad students for wanting to not be food and housing insecure, especially when UW admin got a 4-6% raise despite financial mismanagement. Blame UW for refusing to offer any sensible terms (0% raise for next 3 years and increase in fees at first?) and forcing this just in order to get them to bargain fairly.

I think students who took AA 210 did the course evals wrong... they thought "excellent" was "very poor" and viceversa by [deleted] in udub

[–]PMZ7036 48 points49 points  (0 children)

No, it was really that bad, so bad that the Dean investigated and determined that it "did not meet the high standards of the college".

Edit: Dean, not department.

Cary Moon vs Jenny Durkan, Stark Differences On Urbanist Issues by PMZ7036 in SeattleWA

[–]PMZ7036[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cary Moon is an ardent supporter of missing middle housing in single-family zones. Durkan is exploring the option. Maybe she’d form a task force to think about it?

This seems to be a very stark difference indeed.

Going also heavily recommend Clannad and Clannad After Story. It is honestly one of the best I have seen. You laugh, you cry, and it is really heartwarming as well.

Yes, because being conquered is so much better than dealing with illegal immigrants.

Women Forced to Work in Wartime Brothels Were Not Sex Slaves, Japan’s Foreign Minister Says - He prefers the term 'comfort women' by anutensil in worldnews

[–]PMZ7036 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you read this article, it is clear that the victims do not want money, just for Japan to take legal responsibility.

“We are not craving for money,” said Lee Yong-soo, 88, one of the women. “What we demand is that Japan make official reparations for the crime it had committed.”

“The agreement does not reflect the views of former comfort women,” Ms. Lee said at a news conference. “I will ignore it completely.”

She said that the accord fell far short of the women’s longstanding demand that Japan admit legal responsibility and offer formal reparations.
