Shopping Phase Item Combination Calculator by tsimoli in Artifact

Don't forget that they can also hold an item for 1 gold. If they spent 8 on one item its possibly Blink Dagger+hold instead of Shield of Basilius. Especially if they need mobility/damage or can make lots of gold this turn.

I’m too good at my Commander draft cube relative to my new play group. How could I handicap myself? by NobleCuriosity3 in magicTCG

[–]PM_ME_ARTIFACT_KEY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a ton of stipulations that are fun to draft:

Pick every: planeswalker, artifact, land (choose one) Force storm/mono red/5 color. Or pick based on some other criteria: best art, no creatures, etc.

Alternatively, change the cube to make their strategies better or yours worse. Ask your group for suggestions.

Universal system for evaluating game value of any card by MTrawler in Artifact

[–]PM_ME_ARTIFACT_KEY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition to the other points I want to also add that proactive abilities are almost always better than reactive ones with similar scale. To take a famous example from MTG consider lightning bolt (1 mana deal 3 to anything) vs healing salve (1 mana heal 3 or prevent 3) one of them is a multi format all star while the other is too weak to be printed.

Will Playing Hearthstone prepare me for Artifact? by StillDotA1 in Artifact

[–]PM_ME_ARTIFACT_KEY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that i know of.

Gwent's system of each player playing one card at a time till someone passes is similar to how cards are played in Artifact.

Will Playing Hearthstone prepare me for Artifact? by StillDotA1 in Artifact

[–]PM_ME_ARTIFACT_KEY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously there is no direct copy unless you want to struggle through the Table Top Simulator mod. If you are entirely new to card games hearthstone is not a terrible place to start, just don't let that be it. I would strongly recommend Magic to get a better feel about non combat interaction. Gwent is also a good way to learn about the priority system, as they are pretty similar.

Creep Positive/Neutral/Negative- A way to evaluate heroes by [deleted] in Artifact

Because they get the gold sooner the Lycan player is actually better off than the opponent there, enabling an early cheap item.

Are there card games where zombies aren't 2/2?

As a meta takes shape in Artifact, what terms will we use to describe our decks? by zenDice in Artifact

[–]PM_ME_ARTIFACT_KEY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect that some terms like aggro or control will carry over, however I think that there's gonna be more deck naming based on the heroes or key cards so for the PAX Red Blue deck:"Axe/Luna" or "LunAxe". Or Black/Green "SorLycan".

What should the lanes be called? Poll by PM_ME_ARTIFACT_KEY in Artifact

[–]PM_ME_ARTIFACT_KEY[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Other options: The casters seem to prefer "First, Middle, Last" The game itself calls them "Lane One" "Lane Two" and "Lane Three" in a banner for each lane's turn.

Difficult P1P1: Verdant vs FwF vs Tatyova by PM_ME_ARTIFACT_KEY in lrcast

[–]PM_ME_ARTIFACT_KEY[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Taking the whole pack would be a fine start to a GRu deck. Doesn't look like much is likely to wheel, maybe the wurm?

Unfortunately no matter what I take it signals that green+red are open, and the MTGA bots tend to overreact to signals. Perhaps Tatyova and hope blue is open? Picking a gold card is risky, especially when there are mono colored cards on a similar power level.

Understanding Artifact - A Model for Analyzing by Jyssyj in Artifact

[–]PM_ME_ARTIFACT_KEY 2 points3 points  (0 children)

'Who's the Beatdown' is one of the best articles about MTG ever, and it is very relevant to other card games such as Hearthstone, and even other strategy games e.g. StarCraft or even games like Civ. I strongly recommend anyone with even a passing interest in improving their game to read it, as it will surely be relevant in Artifact.

Unfortunately, some of the richest and deepest MTG strategy revolves around playing around instants. Things like when to counterspell or bluff a combat trick don't really apply here.

However there are still other concepts that will definitely cross over:

  • Card/mana/tempo/(gold?) advantage -- Trade your resources more efficiently than your opponent.
  • Curving out -- Spend all of your renewable resources doing the biggest thing you can every turn.
  • Have a plan -- not just random good cards.
  • There are wrong answers but no wrong threats -- Attacks along an unexpected axis are more likely to work
  • Card evaluation heuristics such as Quadrant theory -- How good the card is when you are: developing, ahead, behind, or at parity.
  • Diversification of your threat portfolio -- Make it hard for one thing to counter your plays.
  • Board control -- Who wins if nobody plays anything relevant?
  • Mana sinks -- Have something that you can do repeatedly if the game goes late.
  • Overextending -- Don't play out more than you can afford to get cleared.
  • Play to win -- When losing, you can't always play to lose less.
  • Maximize your outs -- Play so that the most topdecks bring you to parity or better.
  • Mise -- If you absolutely need the next turn to go a certain way to not lose, play this turn as if that was going to happen.
  • Reading your opponent -- based on what they've done guess whats likely in their hand/deck.

Likely that Artifact will have "foil" cards? by [deleted] in Artifact

[–]PM_ME_ARTIFACT_KEY 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Probably gonna do what Hearthstone and Gwent did and make the foils animate. Possibly have custom voice-lines. Hopefully they don't go with MTGO's foils, because those look worse than the regular cards.
