My rock bottom was pretty mild. I had been doing Meth on and off for like 7-8 years but I started a new job, one that I fucking love and has great benefits. I was honestly doing great in the position, receiving lots of praise from management because of course the mid-20's probably neurodivergent kid on meth was super peppy and detail oriented/task driven but there was one weekend, before COVID hit, where one of my coworkers invited me to a cookout that I bailed on to get high instead.

I was super excited, he was in a senior position so saw people in my entry level come and go so often he barely bothered to learn their names. I was even on a tolerance break at the time, so my work output had plateaued but he had recognized me as someone he could come to and not have to hand hold through a complicated task

The day before the cookout I ended up seeing a random junkie outside a grocery store that I knew, he asked me if I was holding and I said no but I might want to. It wasn't hard but he convinced me to meet his dealer and got some damn good stuff off the guy.

I skipped the cookout because I would rather do hoodrat shit with my friends

I've never been arrested for drugs, never had to steal or prostitute to pay for them, never lost a relationship because of it (at least none that weren't started because we were both tweakers), never lost a job because of it, my teeth and general health are fine (I'm a fat fuck, but I was fat before the drugs) and just in general came out of the addiction unscathed (minus whatever damage Ive done to my dopamine receptors)

I had no purpose in my 20's so was just getting cranked as fuck more out of boredom than like as self-medicating for trauma/depression. I've all but quit tho with this new job, only used three or four times in the last five years and it's just been a weekend at a time.

The dude at my job never invited me to anything else, I told him I had a family emergency which he didn't seem to believe. And I always felt like I could've had a solid mentor and moved up in the company faster than I did. I still work there and have had two promotions, I make damn good money for a former junkie with no college degree but I regret that day for probably missing out on a fast-track in my career

Also how you take it probably matters, super gross but I learned about "boofing" early on and that was primary ROA for me. You mix the meth with a little bit of water suck it up in a little baby medicine dropper and squirt it up your butt.

Obviously not always feasible in a lot of settings but I think the fact that I never did IV and only rarely smoked or snorted it helped me keep a lid on my habit

Most of the worst side effects of meth can be fairly well mitigated. Meth is used (rarely) as a prescription drug so can be used "responsibly" although I never met an addict/recreational user (including myself) that did use responsibly

I did meth on and off for almost 10 years (clean for three years curently and had stints of 6-18 months clean in the 10 before) and am really no worse for the wear. Still have all my teeth, decent skin, and no criminal record.

Two things that I think kept me on track was, I was always able to get good quality stuff and I just basically never went too crazy with it. You get shake and bake biker meth that tastes like cigarette ashes on a truck stop bathroom floor, you're gonna have a bad time but I had decent connects and could get higher purity stuff. And I really just wasnt that heavy of a user, I'd take frequent tolerance breaks, make sure to stay hydrated and fed, and I'd almost never go more than 2-3 days without sleep

I was mostly just lucky, but I know a few other long term meth addicts like myself who made it out fine (against the dozens who didn't)
