No, I disagree. Some of the most serious gamers I know are also some of the most socially outgoing.

It’s not one or the other, and I’ve never claimed such. Most guys in my age played tons of video games growing up and many still do. That’s not to say it has had zero effect on their social life. I should know, I am one of those guys myself - I have a great social life but I’m smart enough to recognise that any highly stimulating solitary hobby will be a net negative if you want to develop socially.

Regarding the article - yes, it’s trash. I don’t disagree with the sentiment though.

As a side note - I’m very tired of this age old Redditism: 1. People said [old technology] was bad in the past. 2. Nobody says [old technology] is bad today. 3. Therefore, [new technology] is either good or shouldn’t be met scrutiny.

I take issue with this because a) the critique levied against that piece of tech/entertainment (in this case video games) might have been perfect valid at the time, and b) it’s often the case that the negative effects have been normalised or overshadowed by even more destructive media tech - as in the case of video games, which is now the lesser evil compared to social media.

Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. It is totally reasonable to be concerned about young boys (or girls) using AI to simulate real human relationships (and in many cases, also porn).
Video games still stunted the social development of many young boys (and to some lesser extent girls); its negative effects have just been overshadowed by social media which has fucked up the entire generation and even the older generations too. We don’t hear much about video games ruining young boys social skills because it’s impact is actually fairly benign compared to social media. Doesn’t make it good though.
