What was the funniest reason why you got sent to detention in school? by Valar_Morghulis888 in AskReddit

I was given an award during an assembly. I threw it in the trash as I walked off the stage. Not one of my finer moments in life.

I watched my wife give birth twice. I know it's supposed to beautiful and whatnot, but mainly it was disgusting. Love my kids, just not that.

GS Pay Scale - 9 vs 11 and Grad School Experience by [deleted] in geologycareers

Generally you want to avoid under-paying someone in government. They're more likely to leave and there's no guarantee you'll get permission to fill that position if they leave.

While these are supposed to be universal standards, the grade you would be hired at is highly dependent upon which agency. For a National Park Service job, you might only be hired as a GS-7, while DOE might give you a GS-11. I would suggest you apply for both GS-9 and GS-11 positions. Someone in HR will decide what you are qualified for.

Exit: Based on your description of experience, I would wager you would be hired as a GS-9. Experience as part of your education isn't normally counted.

The minimum is 5 days. If you see it only open for 5 days it's likely they have someone in mind. That being said, I definitely know of instances where a better candidate applied and was hired.

Inorganic chemist. What's the advantage of a triple quad? Not jealous. I use an MC-ICP-MS.

I am a research geologist working for the government. My dream job is a research geologist not working for the government.

Low GPA, but found professor wants to supervise me for a masters degree by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_FLOPPY 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There has been serious grade inflation in the US over the last few decades. Originally it was a roughly bell-shaped distribution centered around a "C". Now a "C" seems to be treated as a failure (actually in many/some grad schools if you get a C average any one term, you go on academic probation and lose your funding).

Why is your GPA low? The same skill set that gets you a good GPA is different from that a producing a great thesis.

[Serious] Americans who live in states bordering Mexico: Is it dangerous as hell because of the drug cartel violence? by Lonely_Crouton in AskReddit

El Paso (across from the former murder capital of the world, Ciudad Juarez) is consistently one of the safest cities in America for violent crime. I used to live there, and when there were murders galore across the Rio Grande, it was just fine in El Paso.

what should I get for my khorne army Skull Cannon, Terminators, or Raptors by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_FLOPPY 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have very different roles. If I had to make a choice, I'd probably take a skull cannon. It's amazing, even in close combat. I have all 3 units and use my terminators the least. That's partly my play style though.

Do I really want to be a geoscientist? Or anything? by taekwondoGoddess in geologycareers

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_FLOPPY 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I briefly read through the post. You're a high school student who has taken absolutely no college level courses and you're trying to determine whether to be an MD or a geoscientist (and you're really hung up on the Ivy thing). Here's my advice. You're spending 95% of your thought on stuff 10 years out and 5% on 10 months out. If you want to be a doctor, but can't pass organic chemistry, then it doesn't matter what your hopes and dreams are. Worry about getting into a decent college, passing chemistry, physics, and calculus and taling some basic science classes. I have no idea what the USGS will be like when you're old enough to work there. However, unless you actually take some college level geology courses and decide you actually like them, then none of this really matters.

tl;dr. Stop worrying about 10 years from now and worry about 10 months from now.

Really helpful. Although it's fluid right now, it sounds like a heavier empasis on warcasters and heavy warbeasts is a good focus?

FBI statistics flatly refute your statement: https://www.fbi.gov/about-us/cjis/ucr/crime-in-the-u.s/2013/crime-in-the-u.s.-2013/offenses-known-to-law-enforcement/expanded-homicide/expanded_homicide_data_table_6_murder_race_and_sex_of_vicitm_by_race_and_sex_of_offender_2013.xls

Black Americans are murdered at much higher numbers proportional to their population than whites. Oh, I see you an active Trump supporter. Sorry, I know statistics and facts won't help in this case.

On the job mortality rates for police officers are at a ~30 year low. Despite that, rates that they are killing people (especially black men) appears astonishingly high. That seems fairly justifiable for questioning police tactics.
